elmarriachi
Hello everybody, Meng Model's new kit of the Merkava Mk.4 - more than 950 parts, working suspension and tracks, photo etched parts and more.... Started with the lower hull ... Cheers Micha
mostrich
Nice start of a tempting kit. Are those all commission builds or do you keep some of them for yourself?
BlackMax12
Great start Elmarriachi. One thing that's interesting is are the springs solid like they are on the Meng Merkava Mk 3 D and if so how does the suspension work? I have this one on order and hope it shows soon as my stash is empty again. In the meantime I'll be following along on this one for sure. Can you post some closer or close-up pics please? Oops, I just went to your website and the pics are lots bigger for these tired old eyes. Take care, Lloyd
elmarriachi
Hello everybody, new anti-slip covering made on the hull ..... more rough then the version of Meng Model. Battering Ram and barrel holder are small kits of Desert Eagle Products, consisting of resin and photo etched parts. Hi Loyd. the springs are made of plastic, standard plastic as the other kit parts. But the springs are really working. It is very good! Cheers Michael
elmarriachi
Hello everybody, Merkava ready for painting .... wheels and several other stuff not mounted yet, will follow after the painting. Some Friul-tracks are also ready :)
Soeren
Wow. Cool kit. The wheels are aftermarket as well, what was wrong with the kit parts. With the short barrel and gigantic turret it looks quite disproportionate. ;D
elmarriachi
Thanks a lot. The wheels are from Panzerart - still had them lying around ... so I used them They are not much better ... maybe a bit ... but only a little
elmarriachi
Hello everybody... some paint is on ... the friul tracks added and weathered .... now some more details follow ... and some dust ... and a base .... and antennas ❓ Wondering about one issue - Trophy and Droid - does this go together? Or only one of each? Does anybody know more here? ❓ Maybe I have to remove the Droid again .... ? Cheers Micha
BlackMax12
Looks pretty good but just wondering why you would mount the side skirts on the inside of the hangers. Lloyd
elmarriachi
Hi Loyd, the side skirts are only stuck to the car - outside the skirts do not hold without glue :) Once the tracks, wheels and hull are weathered, then the skirts were glued to the outside :) Cheers Michael
Kingsman
Droid and Trophy can be used together as they complement each other to make a layered defence. But I'm not sure how often they actually are used together. In the low-intensity conflicts the IDF is currently engaged in the Droid isn't much use because it only works against laser homing weapons not commonly used in such conflicts, and the Trophy is considerably more useful as it works against a wider range of threats. In that environment the Droid is just something to get broken. If open conventional war broke out with one of Israel's neighbours then I imagine that Droids would become more commonly fitted. Droid is a soft-kill device using laser dazzle through the windows to disorient incoming laser-homing weapons so that they break lock and miss the target. It senses the laser illumination of the host vehicle and aligns its own laser on a reciprocal bearing. Which begs the question how effective it is when the illumination is made by one vehicle/aircraft and the weapon is launched by another from a different direction. And also if the weapon is launched from a high angle from an aircraft, as Droid seems to have a fairly narrow elevation range. But most (all?) laser homing ATGMs are beam-riders, against which Droid will usually be effective. Trophy is a hard-kill system that detects incoming projectiles using millimetre-wave radar. It then launches an interceptor projectile to destroy the threat before it impacts, or at least disrupt its velocity, trajectory or warhead to render it less effective. In theory it works against any kind of projectile, although high-velocity kinetic-energy projectiles are likely to be very challenging. Again, not commonly encountered in LIC. Low and medium velocity RPG-type weapons and gun-fired HEAT rounds are fairly easy targets for it. However, Trophy has collateral damage risks: what happens once the projectile and threat meet is entirely uncontrolled and unpredictable. Blast and high-velocity fragmentation from what could easily be a 3,000 km/h impact are both likely. The inner defence layer on Merkava is of course the skirt, spaced and ball/chain armour external to the main, and substantial, armoured structure. It is without question the best-protected MBT.
