Tamiya 1/48 Spitfire Jan Zumbach.

Recommended Posts

Hi folk's,most of us of a certain age will remember Airfix's Spitfire Vb released in the seventies with it's beautiful artwork and that lovely blue plastic,

since then that  aircraft  of Zumbach's  has alway's been a favourite of mine due to it being often published with other's in colour which  as you know

was a rare wartime occurrence,Anyway as part of the RAF 100 GB I wanted to build a tribute to those overseas airmen especially from the occupied

countries of Europe many who would never again see their homeland,Tamiya's Vb is not perfect if you are  that way inclined but build's like a dream

and look's like Mitchell's legend in every sense,Techmod decal's and I chose the earliest incarnation of his aircraft in the day fighter scheme.

IIRC the Airfix decals had a few mistakes such as the serial number being the wrong size and in the wrong place. This is the correct appearance for BM144 when photographed at Lindholme on 25th April 1942 when only a month old (TOC 29 March 1942).

Note that the front end has darkened due to a thin film of oil being deposited from the prop mechanism.

Couple of small points.

All three of his 'D's were fitted with his special elongated mirror.

And BM144 was fitted with an early type voltage regulator behind the headrest.

Only three more models for a full set😉

Immaculate Spitfire with a beautiful finish!

Another couple of minor points…

Perhaps my eyes are playing tricks, but doesn't the top prop blade look like it has reverse pitch?

And drooped elevators never fail to add that extra sense of realism… 😉

Really nice model, though!

Kind regards,

Joachim

Many thank's Joachim, the prop's have a "pip" on the fixing point for idiot's like me  to get it right so it may be the photo, and yes I should really

have a crack at drooping elevator's etc just about to start a Vc in the MTO GB so watch this space!

Another cracker Steve.

Which paints did you use?

Thanks

Ian

Thank's Ian,Tamiya Sky gray undersides,Ocean gray uppers  brush painted camo of mixed RAF green with a touch of field gray.I hate with a vengeance

their RAF green for some reason it brushes terribly, the thinner you make it the more it seem's to drag the previous coat off even after a day to dry.I need

to find an alternative.

Very nice Spit and great that you recall Jan Zumbach. He was a fameous Polish fighter pilot during WWII and general - a character. After WWII he was still active pilot as soldier of fortune in two African wars (flying A 26 for instance) , finally was murdered in Paris...  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Zumbach

Fantastic model Steve, I really like it.  And as JWM pointed out, Zumbach was a "colourful" character.

Great job! There's a very neat little 48-pager called "Zumbach's Donalds" in the Model Detail Monograph series published by Rossagraph, which collects a whole lot of pictures and details. My copy was invaluable while I was making them in every scale from 1/100 to 1/24!

best,

M.
