1/72nd Eduard Spitfire Mk.IXe, 4 Sqn, SAAF, Ravenna, Italy 1945......FINISHED!!!

Recommended Posts

Hiya Folks,

                No MTO GB should be without a South African Air Force subject, considering their vital contribution to this theatre, so I will be adding one here in the form of a Spitfire Mk.IXe of 4 Sqn SAAF flown by Major M.V. `Wally' Brunton DFC. I`ll be using this kit;

I`ll be using this decal sheet,.... which I researched myself for Xtradecal,.. although it has been incorrectly described as a Mk.IXc, when it is a Mk.IXe! ;

And here is the real aeroplane,....SM143, KJ-T of 4 Sqn SAAF;

So I`ll be getting on with this one asap,

Cheers

Cheers Franz,.... yes I`ve built a few already,....lovely,....although that upper engine cowling can be a bit of a bind to say the least! Here are a couple that I did in MTO markings;

Right then,..I`ve made a start!

Here is the kit with the parts laid out,..... I`ll actually be building two side by side, but the second one may not be an MTO aircraft so I probably won`t feature it here;

Here are the kit decals, etched fret and canopy mask;

Some close up sprue shots,.... the parts are exquisite!

I`ve painted the parts on the sprue and added a watercolour wash,.... whih still needs to be rubbed off here;

Good morning Tony

Very good start  on this very interesting project ... but I must admit that it is getting harder and harder to follow all your different builds 👍

Best regards

I agree with Patrice in that it is quite hard to follow all these fantastic builds. What we need is a TO’T build list where you have one thread and provide links to all you’re current builds in one location. I’m sure it would prove beneficial to your many worldwide admiring followers.

Cheers.. Dave

You really are a man on a mission, I have no idea how you build all these aircraft to such a good standard in so little time. I look forward to seeing all your builds for this GB!

That would mean that I`d have to restore hundreds of missing photos due to the Photobucket fiasco too,..... just put a search in here on BM and most will come up.

Haha,.... yes, once I get my teeth stuck into something I`m a bugger! The MTO is one of my favourite subjects,.... there is always something `different' and new photos and info are surfacing all the time too.

Hiya Folks,

               Got the decals on today but was a bit disappointed as compared with the real thing,...those from the Xtradecal sheet all appear to be too small,..... roundels, codes and unit badge!!! The upper wing roundels should really be C1 Type on this aircraft in 1945 as photographed in the reference picture,.... but I could not find any suitable decals in the spares box,.....and as the B Type provided on the sheet were really far too small I elected to use a another pair of SAAF Bt Type orange centred roundels found after a search through the spares box. The fuselage roundels are slightly too small,....but I stuck with them as I don`t have very many SAAF orange centred roundels left. The 4 Sqn SAAF `KJ' codes are non standard so I had to stick with what I had,.... the code K should really extend onto the pilots entry door, but the codes provided are too small! Here it is so far;

Having had the pleasure of using some Xtradecals only yesterday on my 19 Sqd Spitfire. Mk.1, I share your pain. They did not perform the best and seem a little off in size.

Ill post my progress shortly, however this Spit is still looking quite handsome.

Cheers.. Dave

Tony, I think you might be OK with B type on the upper wings. Weren't C1s an application specific to 2nd TAF up north?

Justin

Hiya Justin,.....no mate,.... the 2nd TAF adopted C1 Types with the yellow outline,...... but in the UK and Med the C Type was adopted,.... without the yellow outline. Even the Fleet Air Arm adopted the C Type too!

Cheers,

            Tony

Good evening Tony

 Another great looking build Bravo !!!!

And now what next ?

Patrice

Thanks Patrice,..... what next,.... a rest!! I`ve just been away for a few days to visit Duxford and I`m in need of a rest up now after the travelling,....... what a fantastic place Duxford is though,....... 2 seat Spitfire`s roaring off, taking well off people aloft on flights all day long (£2,800 for 30 minutes!),.... which was nice to see for nothing,.... plus practice displays by a Hawker Nimrod, P40F/Kittyhawk Mk.II, Wildcat, Sea Fury and others as well as the passenger carrying Tiger Moths, Harvard and Dragon Rapide plying their trades,.... and a visiting AAC Apache and RN Merlin plus a Twin Otter of the British Antarctic Survey Twin Otter!!

Cheers
