Is there any reason why not one aircraft was included in the initial line up?

Probably because the catalogue is full of aircraft - no ships - no tanks - no figures.

At least the Vintage Classic re-issues addresses this.

I've noted the comments about the SRN4 and I've been mulling over whether to add mine to my sale thread.  Not sure what it's worth, so probably would put it on at what I paid plus postage, which would be about £35 in total.  Think it would sell if I put it into the sale?

Mike

There was one for sale at Modelkraft a couple of weeks ago for £20.00, I declined as I've already built it.

Thanks for this info.  I paid £30 for mine so no point in putting it in the sale thread.

Mike

Edit:  decided to put it into the sale and it sold in less than 10 minutes.

Cars have limited appeal and kits like the Vauxhall Viva and Victor are probably not worth the effort, but the Capri, Jaguar 420 and Mercedes 280 SL are still classic cars may still find a market.

The Capri was re-tooled into the Krackle Kat

If Airfix are considering repopping any car kits, the obvious ones to my mind would be the Bond Bug and the Beach Buggy. I don't how attractive sales wise they will be, but DNA Collectible have just released (this month) a high quality expensive ready made 1/18 model of the Bond Bug. Which suggests there may be a market for the Bug at least.

It's the kits that had relatively short lifespans and now garner collectors prices that I'd like to see for us who actually want to build the dam things.

Exactly! They are just the kits I want to build. If I did ever decide to buy a Vauxhall Victor Estate off eBay for £300, then I wouldn't want to touch it....but I so want to build it as Airfix intended!

I don't know. Airfix did re-release the Viva, Escort and Herald as a set back in the mid/late 80s. So there must be some hope for the others. They're all classics in my eyes, even the Maxi. My Dad had one, and it was the first car I "borrowed" after passing my test. Well, he'd gone away for the weekend and said I could use it "just for work"....I actually did several hundred miles that weekend! Not sure if he ever noticed

'ere, you be careful, me Dad's first car was an HA Viva, mine was an HC..............

Mine was a HC too. built the same year I was born...1969. I spent more time shovelling Isopon P38 into it than actually driving it!

Maybe I should see if could buy the moulds from Airfix and then knock them out myself like Dapol did with the railway stuff. 🤔

The Lotus Cortina would be welcome, then I would dare to build the one I have rather than consider bequeathing it to the kids!

How well did the Bassett etc do when they did the limited re-release to Airfix Club members (?) a year or so back?

The Victor Estate was re-tooled into the Rebel Rouser and the Classic Car Set (Viva, Escort, Herald) was in the range in 2006-7

I knew about the Zephyr/Night Prowler and the Cortina/Kansas Cruiser, but never realised that Airfix ruined the Victor as well. Did the Rebel Rouser actually get released? I don't think I ever saw one.

I got confused on the Classic car set. I did get the 2006 release, but was actually thinking of the TR4/Herald/Escort set. I seem to remember buying that in the late 80s, maybe early 90s. Could be wrong though.

So! If I want a stock Victor, I will have to pay £300 on eBay. 🙁

Interesting that 2 of the reissue boxarts are in the list of Box Art bloopers on the Model Stories web site -

1. The Panther - "Bad Taste" - Notice the right side where it's shooting up a Red Cross ambulance 😮

2. The Bren/AT Gun - Ok so we have a direct fire AT gun on top of a hill firing upwards. What is it shooting at? 🤨

It will be interesting to see how successful these are.

Cheers

Depends which Bf 109s you are talking about. The 1/72 Bf 109G is quite horrible, but the E's are up there with the best available (Tamiya most likely). The 1/48 Bf 109E's are also very good in a market that does not have a 'definitive' kit of the mark (although there are some good ones - Tamiya, Eduard, Hasegawa)

Speaking of 1/72 kits, the E is miles ahead above the G, but IMHO even the E is not in the same league as Tamiya's offering when it comes to the quality of the plastic parts. Things like the wheels, landing gear and aileron balance masses are like blobs compared to what Tamiya gives. The fact that fit in Airfix kit can be very variable is another sign that moulding quality is not on the same level. Not saying that the Airfix kit is a bad one (I've built one and have another two to build) but the Tamiya one is a much better kit.

To be fully honest, IMHO none of the 1/72 kits made by Airfix is up there with the best when it comes to moulding quality. Not that it matters much in the overall scheme of things, as Airfix makes up for it with a better availability , at least in the UK, and generally good prices.

And the Fireball XL5.

Both the Fireball XL5 and Stingray kits never formed part of the Airfix inventory and both were to all intents and purposes a sub-contractor commission  from Lyons Maid. Albeit in the case of Fireball XL5  it was an inherited contract after Kitmaster went belly up.

Strong indications are the moulds were returned to Lyons Maid after the required shots were sent out/used.

As the learned gentleman above said......you lucky, lucky man!

What a find though. Was it all there and just needing refurbing?

Never seem to find that many kits at bootsales (although I did bag a Matchbox Me 110 and Airfix new tool Gladiator last weekend. Had a heart stopping moment last year when I found an Airfix Austin Maxi box, that is until I looked inside to find mostly empty sprues. Darn!

Please post up some pics of the Fireball once it's done.

I usedto have most of the 1/32nd cars including the Victor Estate. Around 10 -15 tears ago I sold them all from upwards of £25 each. The Vauxhall got me 45!!

That is the plan. There was only one other model in there

of a twin prop civvy job peppered with hot pin 'bullet holes'.

Those were the days!

They were indeed! Always getting into trouble for "borrowing" my mums Cook's Matches that she kept next to the stove. Worth it though, as my G-George Lancaster looked the biz with the number 1 engine ablaze as I ran around the garden with it one night. And I would get a telling off for "ruining" my models by using the hot pin bullet hole method too....and then into the garden again with the matches afterwards. Always remember those little strands of burnt plastic that hung in the air afterwards.
