1/48th Airfix Mustang Mk.IV, 3 Sqn RAAF,Italy 1945.....FINISHED!!!

Recommended Posts

Hiya Folks,

               Having finished the Ju52 I thought that I`d start another model and as I have just bought the new 1/48th scale P-51D Mustang and want to build a 3 Sqn RAAF Mustang Mk.IV, I thought that I would combine the two. I bought it yesterday, took the obligatory photos and started it the same night, while finishing off some other models,.... the quality is superb!

The decals that I intend to use,... from an old Hasegawa kit,.... but only if I can find a suitable P-51K propeller, as opposed to the P-51D prop in the kit.;

Here is the real aircraft,....KH716, CV-P,.... flown by Sqn. Ldr. Murray Nash,....which I am presuming has a red and yellow spinner?;

Now,.... if I cannot find a suitable P-51K propeller to fit,.... then I shall resort to one of the P-51D`s on charge,.... if I can cobble decals together,...watch this space!;

And after pre painting the parts on the sprue,.... here is the cockpit under construction. The cockpit area was painted Dark Olive Drab after an undercoat of sprayed on Dark Green ;

Nice choice Tony.

The kit looks very nice indeed, not added one to my stash yet as I already have "a few" Mustangs in the stash, not that you can have too many.

I have an ICM P-51K in the stash which comes with both types of prop so if you want you can have the "K" props from that and I will build it as a "D".

Cheers mate and thanks very much for the offer,..... I`ll be searching through my spares box today and hopefully I have got the required prop blades,.... but if not then I might just take you up on that very kind offer,

Cheers

That’s a generous offer MM and yet another fantastic modelling subject to add to this GB - one in which I have yet not entered as yet!

According to David Muir’s “Southern Cross Mustangs” bible, the spinner on Nash’s aircraft is red and NMF

Cheers and watching on.. Dave

Cheers Dave,..... how weird is that,..... I was just about to get my copy of `Southern Cross Mustang`s' from the book shelf to see what David says about this aircraft!!! Spooky!

Agreed,... it is a very generous offer.

Cheers

This great book is never far from my side and it’s one from my library that I tell my wife - “This is another book that I want to be buried with!”... well I figure I’ll be down there for a while so might as well have something good to read!

Cheers.. Dave

Haha,.... love it,...... I think I agree with you there,.... a nice library has to be a must!!!

Done a bit more this morning,.... assembled the wing, with pre painted wheel well,.... painted silver with the rear spar in Zinc Chromate;

And the full cockpit is finished,.... although I still need to paint the seat straps,... which are very cleverly represented. There are also some great decals for the cockpit interior representing placards etc;

The kit includes optional British style Louvres for the underside of the nose,.... but the chosen subject does not have them fitted,

Cheers

Hiya Folks,.... another update,...

The fuselage and wings have been joined,..... note the optional tail fins,... ready to be added along with the horizontal tailplane;

I am very impressed with this kit so far and would say that so far  it is the best Mustang that I have built!

Cheers

Hiya Folks,

                Well I`ve got the main airframe together now,...... should have added the tail fin before joining the fuselage halves as it wouldn`t fit afterwards and I had to trim some tabs from the tail unit,...... these new Airfix kits really do have to be built using the instructions stage by stage as there are some clever little methods which can catch out the unwary,.... another being the wing struts on the Swordfish,.....which I found out after joining the wing halves, leaving them to dry and then noticed that I should have added the struts before doing so!

Anyway,..... the tail fitted eventually. The kit also includes three types of canopy and two styles of windscreen,... all have received a coat of black ready to add the top colour later. Just a shame that alternative propeller blades for a P-51K were not included too!  I have to say that and so far I am very impressed by this kit;

Have to agree with you Tony, seems odd to have all these extras and then no Aeroproducts prop to make a Mk.IV. Airfix’s 1/72 Mustang is a gem of a kit so it’s good to hear that this larger version is proportionally better as well. I’ve still got an unbuilt Tamiya kit, so have held off until now - I’m sure this will change once ‘Dooleybird’ makes an appearance later this year.

Cheers. Dave

Thanks Fella`s and yes Dave,... I hope that the `Commonwealth' boxing including Dooleybird will have an Aeroproducts propeller!

Right,..... the model was sanded smooth and then the cockpit was masked off;

Ready for a couple of sprayed on coats of Tamiya rattle can Polished Aluminium;

So next to mask off the anti glare panel and then paint the front of the spinner red,

Cheers

Hiya Folks,

               A bit more progress,..... the Olive Drab anti glare panel has been added (although not sure whether it is dark enough,...it looks almost black in ref photos!) and the spinner tip has been painted red. I`ve just masked off the panel which is to be painted a darker shade of silver;

Soon be ready for the decals,

Hiya Folks,

              Well I applied the decals today,..... the Hasegawa decals didn`t seem to match the available photos of the real thing,.....with the codes a touch too big and thick and the fin flashes were too narrow! Then I remembered that the same aircraft was on the Xtradecal Med Fighters sheet so used the codes and serial from that instead,..... they may be a touch too small but look better I think. Here is the model with its new codes and the old Hasegawa ones having been removed and placed on the paper. I also replaced the fin stripes with some from an Aeromaster Tempest sheet;

I`ve gone for the original finish for CV-P,..... with B Type roundels above the wings and the spinner partially painted red. Later it had the leading edges of the wings and tail roughly painted in a black material called `stucco', then the upper wing roundel was altered with a white ring to become a C Type, the spinner was painted all red and finally the `stucco' was removed! This info comes from the fantastic book `Southern Cross Mustangs' by David Muir,

That’s looking just lovely Tony. I also like the Type B’s on top of the wings and think the replacement codes may look a little better than those already applied. I’ll also throw in another plug for David Muir’s superb SCM book - a real work of art and a must for any P-51 lover.

Cheers.. Dave

Hiya Folks,.... a bit more done on the Mustang,...... a coat of matt varnish to dull it down and the undercarriage fitted. I found some Aeroproducts propeller blades left over from a Hasegawa kit and the rudder has received its second coat of paint,.... ready to receive its Southern Cross stars,

Impressive all round Tony. This really is an attractive scheme applied to a very attractive airframe and like their little gem 1/72 kit, Airfix seem to have captured the Mustangs lovely lines faithfully.

Thanks Dave,.....I`ve been really impressed with this kit and will be building more,..... I`d go so far as to say it is the best kit in this scale of the P-51D,

Cheers,

Oh, knowing how unforgiving that silver paint is... a top-notch surface there, Tony! V-P

Thanks very much V-P,..... I`ve gone for the faded and weathered natural metal look!

Got a bit more done today and we are almost there now,..... added the decals to the re painted rudder and got the u/c doors on, plus a bit of mild weathering as the original aeroplane was quite clean;

That's a lovely final finish on this superb Mustang.... but don't forget that tape mask on the windscreen Tony!

Looks like Airfix have really captured the P-51's shape wonderfully well and this 3 Squadron scheme certainly suits it.

Hard to pick my favourite between this and that lovely Ju52.

Cheers.. Dave

I`ve been really pleased with this model,..... I was one of those wondering why Airfix were doing a P-51D,.... but not any more,.... it is the best in its scale!!!
