Folks, doing a 1/48 ju88 night fighter where the entire airframe is rlm22.

now i know rlm 22 isn't just "black" but since this will be a fair area to cover i wondered if anyone had any opinions?

i'm going to need to mix the paint (along with thinner) in a fairly large batch so i was wondering about mainly tamiya xf69 with some xf1. I think vallejo air do 22 but i just can't get on with it.

i don't know if i should spray the whole thing then mask off panels to break up the monotiny....

The Model Air colour for RLM22 is indeed 'Black' - Modelair 57.  I know the problems you have had with MA so it will be interesting to see what folk come up with - I think Tamiya is a good starting point.  I am sure I've seen a thread about this - or maybe it was in a copy of Airfix Model World - I'll go and have a look through some back issues - looking for night fighter builds and see if there are any tips.  It will take my mind off my primer nightmare...

Lawzer - I cannot find a single 'all black' build in over 60 issues of AMW - BUT found 4 British WWII bomber builds - all with black undersides.

2 virtually ignore the underside - other than talking about scratch building bomb bay detail - 1 says to use XF69 - NATO Black as 'it is more realistic at 1/72 scale'.

The last one I have sent you an email about - not a lot of detail - but more what you might be trying to achieve.

Looking forward to seeing how you get on with it - just have fun eh...

Not much use as that doesn’t have the paint shade he is after - RLM 22

I don't usually use straight black at all, I do like XF63 German Grey, also XF68 Nato Black, and there is a Tyre black as well, all of those are dark, but not stark if you get my drift

Ah! I see I've confused XF22 for RLM 22.

Getting old blows!

Thank you guys for your nice comments.

For that black finish, i've painted panel by panel with different shades of black with brown, sand, ochre...

Than i've applied various filters made with oil paints (raw umber, Naples yellow, Payne grey...).

I've used too felt pens, pigments, watercolour crayons...

Personally I would go for overall NATO Black (XF-69) as you plan but then rather than specific panels in another shade (how likely is a specific panel (or panels) going to be a different color when the entire original air frame was painted black?) mist on variations both lighter and darker. This will avoid a patchwork appearance while breaking up a solid overall color.

Even better - no masking!!! :)
