Restored Hurricane Take Off - 1/48 Airfix Mk.I Hurricane with motorised prop

Hawker Hurricane Mk.I R4118

Take off at the Victory Show 2015

Well it's been a while since I have posted anything in this section but here is my project from the recent Hawker (Siddeley) GB. The project itself started when I discovered that the 1/48 new tool Airfix kit, I had in the stash, included the decals for the restored version of Mk.I Hurricane R4118 which I had seen at the Victory Show in 2015. I had taken lots of photos of it at the show and also taken some video of it in flight and taking off. I am very lucky in that we live less than a mile from where the Victory Show takes place and can walk there. We also get quite a few of the aircraft flying over our house depending on the display lines.

For more details about R4118 there is a great website with loads of fantastic photos and information which can be found here.

My build was pretty straight forward but I discovered fairly early on that, although R4118 can be in theory built from the kit, there are some differences between what's in the box and some areas of the restored version. @Troy Smith first alerted me to the fact that the restored version has a different spinner and tailwheel. Troy very kindly offered to send me the correct versions which he did and I have included them on my build. Studying the photos I had taken at the airshow (here and here) and on the R4118 website also demonstrated I needed to add a few other bits and pieces if I was going to make it closer to the actual restored version I had seen.

The main difficulty for me was not doing much weathering. With previous aircraft builds I have a added a fair amount but, as this was done as the restored version at the Victory Show in 2015, I wanted to do it as clean as it actually was. While building mine I kept seeing other models of beautifully weathered Hurricanes and thinking I could just add...........but didn't.

The Hawker (Siddeley) GB was thoroughly enjoyable and thanks to @Col. for suggesting and being the host of the GB. Thank you to everyone, especially @Troy Smith, for all the support and comments during my build.

Comments and suggestions welcome.

Kind regards,

Stix

That's a very nice little diorama.

You've done a lovely job with the Hurricane, but the positioning of the  retracting undercarriage steals the show for me, it's a masterstroke. A brilliantly simple touch that brings the whole thing to life.

Well done and thanks for sharing it with us.

Superb work all round Stix the retracting U/C really does give it an animated pose to go with the spinning prop I'm sure It'll inspire more

in flight build's in future.

Hi Stix,

Very good result with your Hurricane dio. The motorised prop really gives it that nice finishing touch. Didn't you do a 1/72 scale version too?

Brilliant build as always.

All the best Greg

Stix,

EXQUISITELY built with STUNNING finish.. the colors are quite resplendent and your photography is EXCELLENT!

Stix, sir ,your photos are AWESOME and like the way you display the Hurricane in the vignette.

BEAUTIFUL work and most IMPRESSIVE model I have seen.

would love to see it in person.

Excellent idea and ditto realisation!

Perhaps a clear perspex mounting pole, attached just in front of the ventral strake for a sharper angle would have enhanced the sense of speed and realism even further? And it's easier to mentally disregard a support, if it's not painted like the subject itself. All IMHO, of course…

Really slick job!

Kind regards,

Joachim

Brilliant...  Undercarriage position food for thought that...

Thank you very much Hairtrigger. The position of the undercarriage - as if it's being retracted - does add another dimension to the model and it's display. Can't claim it as my own idea but I like the way it looks.

Kind regards,

Stix

Enjoyed following the build Stix, the result speaks for it's self but was really well conceived, executed and presented, great work.

Hi cngaero. Thank you very much for your very kind comments. I am pleased you like the undercarriage positioning but I cannot take credit for the idea. I have seen other modellers do the same and thought it would work for this project as I actually videoed R4118 taking off.

Kind regards,

Stix

Lovely Hurricane, and great presentation.

But he must have started raising the gear before he even left the ground!!

Thank you very much Ian and yes he's a very talented pilot!....or they've given R4118 that new super-quick retractable undercarriage!!
