Probably no big deal to you gents, and I will most likely not build either of them, as WW1 is not my main area of interest or preferred scale, but I recently bought both of the 1/72 new-tool Fokker DVII versions that Eduard  has released; only biplane I have built to date  is the Matchbox Siskin, but it was so  much fun, and the DVII is such a handsome airplane, I just couldn't resist; now I just need to get all-new paints, decal sheets, and references...it's a sickness, I tells ya! 🤪

Mike

That being said, if WNW ever does a P-6E, P-12E, F4B-4, or Nieuport 28C-1, I will be SORELY tempted!

I bought one of those myself (DVII), and since that broke my semi-promise of not buying anything more until I emptied the stash, I had a relapse and bought a Roden Brisfit, an Eduard Eindecker, a pair of Roden Camels and a Phönix.🥴

Ha! I glad to see that I am not the only one that keeps making this resolution.

I haven't seen that paint set before, have you used it yet?

Not yet, it only arrived today.

I have used their WW1 German colours set though and they're easy to work with.

Hi all -

Picked up the WNW Sopwith Pup kit from a local model shop today to take my stash up to four kits.

I don't normally build up kit stashes but in view of my fencing club having to postpone for foreseeable future (due to government closure of gyms along with pubs, restaurants, etc.) decided I needed some extra kits to kill some time at home during this awful crises .............

Regards

Dave

You want to read one of Arthur Gould Lee's books or "Sopwith Scout 7309" by Gordon Taylor.

They're perfect for building a little atmosphere with a Pup build.

The Shorts 184 prop is still following us around in the car which is funny as it is not even the same car! We had to get rid of Bertha, the old CRV, and now have Gabby, a newer CRV named after Gabrielle Drake from Space 1999 (and sister of legendary folk singer Nick Drake). I not only swapped my plate, as I am sad enough to have one, but we also put the blade in the back meaning to bring it indoors and it is still there. The guitarists on here might appreciate my plate is P90MLV in honour of some great guitars.

Meanwhile, as a high risk patient, I am well and truly isolated so almost finished my WNW Albatros, the blue and white stripey one, started the Gnome Pup as Harold Balfour’s from The School of Special Flying at Gosport, bought a 1/32 SPAD XIII, which will become the Memorial Flight example in it’s first scheme and I will exhibit it with this.

when we did this... (was I ever that young?)

I was even made an honourary member of the squadron, which is a great honour.

I’m also about to order a set of overtrees for the DV so that I can do the one the Memorial Flight have been working on for the estate of the late Javier Arango, who was a great guy and good friend, a DVII, as every home should have one and there is always the later stuff, Neville Duke’s record breaking Hawker Hunter, the ICM Gladiator, a Swordfish (if anyone has photos of NF389 when it was with the ATDU at Gosport....)

I full expect more WW1, but they would probably need to be related to the Memorial Flight, so a Morane AI would be good, 1 1/2 Strutter, Aviatik.....

I picked up a Gavia 1/48 Bristol Scout C on eBay and just got it delivered and it looks great.  Should be a relatively simple build and would make a good first kit for someone thinking about getting into WWI models.  It's small but the molding looks excellent, very much up to the standards of Eduard weekend edition WWI kits.  And a very simple paint Job - I am currently working to complete a Halberdtadt IV and need something a bit easier and relaxing, at least something without lozenge and rib tape!

Hurray won an Ebay auction on a WNW  Hawa with a bit of Eduard photo etch. These kits look awesome and very juicy now I can afford a few. True to form the next build will be a Roden Siemens D111 to cut my teeth so to speak. Jasta 12 livery.

Now a question for you folk. What are the merits of RR's build books on WNW's kits when they provide a " book " with each kit,

@melvyn hiscock

There are photos of NF389 in ATDU service taken during a summer 1949 visit to RNAS Culdrose on p.47 of Peter London's RNAS Culdrose and p.89 of his In Cornish Skies.  They are not the same photo, the one in the Culdrose book being clearer.  Aircraft appears to be in post-way EDSG/Sky scheme with high demarcation and pre-war style "A-Type" roundels.  Can't see fuselage side for possible code in either but Sturtivant's FAA aircraft 1939 To 1945 doesn't mention one for this period..

Haven't spotted anything on her ATDU days in either Ray Sturtivant's The Swordfish Story or the Haynes Workshop Manual.

Thanks Seahawk, I was hoping there was a Gosport photo although the TDU didn’t go to Culdrose until quite late, I’m not sure when ‘389 was with them.

Aeroplane’s archive used to have some photos (they were passing interest at the time whilst I looked for other stuff, I wish I’d had them copied). There was at least one with a largely white fuselage and D-type roundels, with a note saying it was being flown at an air day by Peter Twiss. This was before they repainted her and flew her for ‘Sink the Bismark’. Of course, the ‘Sink the Bismark’ film scheme is an option.

Congrats on the ebay victory, the kits are indeed awesome. I've been tempted by the Roden Siemens kit, there's a good youtube video of someone building it with some fixing of details, not necessary but interesting to watch.

You’re quite right that ATDU later moved to Culdrose but at the time of the photos It was Gosport-based: NF389 was just visiting Culdrose.

That's a great score, didn't know there was a kit of the Bristol Scout.

I have broken all but one of my mini drill bits drilling out the SPAD for the rigging.

i am beginning to think the correct answer for ’do you have a hobby?’ is ‘yes, I knit World War One aircraft kits.

Both very tempting. The SPAD will be fun, having been involved with the real one since 1987 you’d think I’d have loads of detail pics but can I find them? I think a lot may be slides, which are in the loft, or on an old laptop. I know I did a walk around on that, the DVII and. Dr1.  I can find the Fokker pictures but not the SPAD

On a point of interest was the Spad an unusually small aircraft?

It does tend to look very squat. The VII is smaller than the XIII. Not that much smaller than a Pup or Camel but it does look lower. Somewhere I have a pic of it next to the SE 5

well, if you are going to do knitting, then may I suggest a DH2 or an FE ?

I’ve been trying to pick up one in 1/72 but they are very rare :(

Not really, about average, about the size of a Fokker D.VII or Albatros D.III / V / Va, but a bit larger that a Sopwith Camel or Pup, and smaller than an SE5A

Built up a nice lockdown stash with all the unspent beer tokens:

WNW Sopwith Tripe

WNW Sopwith Pup

WNW Eindekker IV

CSM Nieuport

Roden  SE5a

Looks like it's going to be a 6 month haul in lockdown so plenty of time to learn how to rigging.

The Wingnut Wings Snipe (Late) is on the blocks and is up next.
Has anyone made this kit? If so is there anything I need to know?
Andrew.
