Romeo Alpha Yankee
This GB seems to have snuck up on me, first up I will be building the 1/72 Airfix Tomahawk kit using Aussie Decals for 3SQN in the Western Desert. Some kit and decal pictures to follow soon.

Having the same kit I was thinking the exact same subject choice, however need to research some images to work out what was possible and within my capability - I'm not much of a weatherer and this theatre is right up there for weathering nuts and maestros. On the other hand I could go the opposite (and sinister way) by shooting down your Tom-a-chook with a JG27 Bf109?? Cheers.. Dave (who is fast becoming overcommitted to this years GB's!). Romeo Alpha Yankee
Go for it Dave, I have a Hobby Boss cannon-armed Hurricane for this GB as well. Hopefully, the Aussie Decal sheet plays the game. The sheet seems to be part screen printed and part laser printed. Last time I used laser versions I had to overpaint them as they were very translucent.
Romeo Alpha Yankee
So here are few shots of my progress this afternoon The good old box and decal sheet shots I was mistaken about the sheet, it is all Alps printed so I will be weary of it. And some paint applied to the parts on the sprue
Rabbit Leader
Ooh - I’ve been burned by those types of decals before and will now avoid at all costs. So which of the schemes have you decided on Ray? Is that Caldwell’s 250 Squadron aircraft? Cheers.. Dave

Romeo Alpha Yankee
1 hour ago, Franz75 said: Rabbit Leader are this decals are badly made or just historically inaccurate? When Aussie Decals first started they were the best Aussie subject decals on the market. The Company changed hands and went form commercial screen printed type decals to ALps Laser printed. I used part of one of their sheets on a Hasegawa Lancaster... Can you see the letter N? That sheet did not come with the white backing decals, I hope these will perform better. IIf they don't I should be able to find replacement national marking elsewhere. I believe the research for these sheets I good with minimal inaccuracies. Franz75
Code letters decals are available, I have few my self. But mistakes lake this are annoying and unacceptable. Nice Lancaster by the way. For Tomahawk I can recommended Xtradecal set X72139, there is the "Killers" plane too from 250 Sqn. I have this set my self and I used that brand before. It is good quality decal set.
Romeo Alpha Yankee
What I like about these new Series 1 Airfix kits is the ease of construction an low parts count Some dry brushing on the cockpit walls Cockpit assembled Fuselage buttoned up and tail feathers attached

Apologies @Franz75, just re-reading Ray’s build and noticed your decal query. I believe the historical aspect of these decals are fine, it’s rather the quality of them may not be as good as what we are used too these days. I’m hoping Ray has luck with them as I’m looking forward to this build. So which scheme did you end up decided on Ray? Cheers.. Dave

Romeo Alpha Yankee
Slow progress as I have some other priority builds going on. I managed some more assembley. Only to get a nice glue-laden thumbprint on the canopy which will have to be polished out. I decided I would have a go at brush painting the externals of this build. lower fuselage started I found a part started Hasegawa Kittyhawk to be built as a 450SQN machine, it was under the 25% started rule but I did not take any pictures of it at that stage so I might tack it onto the thread (if that is OK Mods?)

Romeo Alpha Yankee
So I have let these one wane on the bench while I did other stuff. Finally an update, the results of sanding back the bush painted attempt (prior to the last update) Onto some camo painting, I used Blutak sausages to create the masked areas Tomahawk done Kittyhawk done And then the undersides were done, now waiting for it to all dry properly and I can then get on with finishing them.
Romeo Alpha Yankee
I have been slowly doing stuff on these. I thought that the end date was the 22nd and I missed it. Looks like I might get both of these across the line. Stay tuned.

Romeo Alpha Yankee
Looks like I will make it. been decalling and doing some final painting. I am using different Aussie decals sheets for both. The 450SQN Kittyhawk sheet is screen printed ad old, some decals cracked and I manage to destroy one of the wing roundel red centres. Gloss coat is on, I will attempt some weathering and then flatten the finish some. Nearly there! The 3SQN Tomahawk decals are laser/alps printed with a sheet of whites to go under the coloured parts The guns and antenna ion the Tomahawk have given me grief, hopefully no more knocking them off
Rabbit Leader
They’re both looking great Ray. Good to see these two nearing the finishing line. A nice tribute to two fine Aussie units. Cheers.. Dave
Romeo Alpha Yankee
And done 3SQN Tomahawk 450SQN Kittyhawk As you may have noticed, I did not have much fun with the clear parts. Oh well, every model can't be perfect
