1/72 Revell Avro Lancaster B.III

Recommended Posts

Dear fellow Britmodellers,

after a long time in-the-making (half a year, actually) my 1/72 Revell Lancaster B.III is finished.

I added Aires resin wheels, Quickboost gun barrels and Eduard exterior set.

Only few parts of the Eduard set were used, like the antennas.

The model was painted with Gunze acrylics, decals are from the box, representing a machine of 100.Squadron in 1945.

Main wings were cut on the upper sides for corrected dihedral.

The Revell kit allows you to display the inner engines in an "open" position.

To my disappointment, I made a series of mistakes, that spoil the results somehow.

First, some dust residue from sanding has contaminated the inside of the canopy.

Then, I only partially masked the front turret, forgetting the middle section (I still have no clue how I did this...) which is now Black instead of Clear.

Also, the decal code letters on the fuselage side show some unpleasant 'silvering'.

Well, we all know, sometimes you succeed, sometimes not!

Even if this is not the best I ever presented in this forum, I hope you find my Lancaster acceptable.

Note the silvering of the individual code "Z".

On the above image, you can see there's some dust settled inside the canopy.

And the following image reveals silvering on the fuselage side decals:

A very acceptable build of the Lancaster, particularly of one of my squadron.

I am impressed with the Revell bomb-bay.

Shame about the silvering, happens to us all but it still looks good.

That really is impressive.

With decals, especially with codes with large straight sides of the letters, it's often worth using a craft knife and straight edge to cut away any film between the letters. It's tedious but avoids silvering like that. The letters will require careful alignment but it is worth the effort.

Kind regards,

Stix

Roman, don't be so hard on yourself, your Lancaster is excellent. I know many modellers who would be proud to have one as good as yours in their collection.

If mine turns out half as good, I'll be a happy chap.

Keep up the good work.

Fantastic! I can appreciate the amount of work that went into this. Exceptional finish, even with the decals, sometimes there is nothing that can be done to prevent silvering.👍

Excellent Lancaster!

I admire your honesty about mistakes/mishaps, though I likely would not have noticed.

Overall, I'd be happy to do a Lancaster half as good as yours.

I especially love the subtle toning in the exhaust stains over the wings.

Great Lancaster Roman

I wish my builds were half as good!!

Have you thought of gently using the tip of a wooden toothpick to very carefully scrape and remove the black paint from the canopy that wasn't masked correctly?

Often if I have overspray or paint creep on canopies I tidy up the windows back to the canopy framing using this technique.....it works pretty well .....might be worth a try???

Cheers

Great work, Roman and great photos indeed. I like the colors, since Gunze is my choice for British upper cammo and you did a great job in masking camouflage pattern, it looks spot-on. Weathering is nice and black color is really nicely painted, it is very hard to achieve it. Silvering looks the same like one of my previous builds, Bf-110 nightfighter. I blame Future to be the cause of it. I managed to tone the silvering down a bit by carefully mist-spray it with the black color between letters slowly in many light coats, and than drybrush it with paintbrush. Overall, it is a minor fault since the rest of the model looks great.

Very nice Lanc Roman!

I always get a bit of silvering with red serials on black. One method to fix it is to make very light strokes over the area with a new scalpel blade and keep soaking the area with Microsol. After a few days of repeated applications you can sometimes see quite an improvement.

Another dodge - on small areas - is to apply a little Tamiya extra thin liquid cement.

Anyway, it's a superb model.
