Airfix 1/72 Avro Vulcan XM597 Operation Black Buck

Recommended Posts

Just finished my Vulcan XM597

Built OOB, with additional decals to build XM597 which attacked the radar installations on the Falklands with American Shrike missiles.

The missiles are from 2 Italeri Intruder kits.

lovely vulcan, you need to "Camoflage"  your shrikes though to be strictly accurate Camo shrike on vulcan.

The paint used was car spray paint, a very good friend of mine was tasked to go down to Halfords in Lincoln   to buy the cans!

When the unused missiles were returned to the USAF after the war the chap who had come to inspect them nearly had a heart attack in the building when he saw what had been done to the paint finish. The RAF got a large bill to repaint them all!

Nice to see 597 done instead of 607 (or 558!!)

I wasn't aware the Shrikes were "camo'd".  You learn something new every day.  I did think though, that the shrikes were only carried on one side, with a jammer pod carried on the other, or am I wrong?

A very nice OOB, I still think its a decent enough kit that builds to an impressive model, I really must get around to mine someday.

Cheers, M.

were only carried on one side,

At least one mission had 4

'Immediately the Vulcan launched two Shrikes that destroyed it.

After having loitered on station for few more minutes hoping that the AN/TPS-43F radar might be switched on again, the bomber reached its Victor tanker for an air-to-air refuelling (AAR) half way back to Wideawake.

Noteworthy the Vulcan was forced to interrupt the AAR, given the break of the tip of its refuelling probe and the crew had to divert to Rio de Janeiro airport in Brazil.

Due to its very low fuel state, the bomber climbed to 40,000ft, where it burned less fuel and where its aircrew tried to release the two unfired Shrikes. Eventually one of them failed to fire and remained attached to the pylon because there was no other system for releasing it.'

The Vulcan and crew were impounded till the end of the hostilities then  were released but the missile was not returned. The Vulcan is now preserved at a museum in scotland(the name escapes me ).
