Royal Navy Fighter Squadron Hurricane

Recommended Posts

This GB has crept up on me, I've been busy with other GBs when I should have been getting ready. Still, I have 7 or 8 builds planned; the first one is this:

Hurricane-RN-806NAS-Z4932-based-Aboukir-

I'll be using the old Airfix kit, suitably modified, and Xtradecals transfers from their Fighters over Africa and the Mediterranean part 2 sheet.

Here's the kit:

20180507_211733

It's bits:

2018-05-07_09-33-36

The extra/ replacement bits:

20180507_211809

The profile:

20180507_211827

I'll be making a start on Wednesday.

Thanks for looking.

Cool! What prop are you using? It looks familiar.

Chris

Thanks Chris, it's one from an Airfix Spitfire I but I need to read the thread I've posted below, to make sure I'm right.

It's Wednesday so I've made a start, after visiting the LHS for supplies (And to eye-up the Airfix Victor the have in stock).

First up, a coat of Colourcoats Interior Grey-green for the cockpit and a coat of Humbrol 33 for the wheel hubs:

20180509_134628

Then a first coat of Humbrol 153 for the propeller hub:

20180509_134244

Some Humbrol 24 for the propeller tips:

20180509_134255

Some Humbrol 33 on the undercarriage legs (and those ejector marks on the elevators will need some filler):

20180509_134652

Some filler on the ejector mark on the seat:

20180509_134737

Finally, I glued the Vokes filter halves together:

20180509_134305

That's all for now. If anyone needs me, I'll be sitting in the sun.

Thanks for looking.

An early finish today so, after safely stashing the latest delivery of kits from prying eyes, I had a fiddle with the Hurricane.

Fuselage halves together, the amount of filler shows that the mold is showing its age:

Once the seams are sorted I'll insert the cockpit bits (I added some plasticard to make seat look a little less like a chair and a control stick from a Spitfire):

Thanks for looking.

Nice start, but a lot of work ahead of you.

Thanks, not that much work (see below).

Nice start so far.  Quick question, would the inside of the UC doors be black or painted in aluminium?

Thanks. The undercarriage doors will be aluminium, the black is the undercoat.

There's been a little progress:

Underside masked and a first coat of Humbrol Middle Stone slapped on:

I'll work on the Tomahawks  (and plan some Spitfire builds) while it's drying.

Thanks for looking.

Very nice job so far,...... I do like this subject which is why I researched it for the sheet and intend to do it myself one day,..... along with every other option! Might I suggest that you fill in the gaps that are still open around the Vokes filter and also sand the spinner to remove the piece of sprue gate,..... things like this can be missed by the naked eye but then stand out like a sore thumb when you post them on line,....... I`m always doing this but some nit picker (like me!!) always see`s them! It will make the finished model look so much better.

All the best mate,

                         Tony

Edit,.... meant to say,.... that cockpit is the dogs b*llocks,..... really well done.

Thanks Tony, especially for pointing out the bits that need rectifying; I gave the spinner a sand after posting the photograph and had thought I'd got rid of the sprue bit but closer inspection reveals I hadn't. I'll deal with the gap around the Vokes filter once the masking is off (if I remember... feel free to point it out again, if I forget).

I didn't know you were responsible for the sheet, it's got a lot of interesting schemes and I've done nearly all of them but can't do the SAAF Spitfires because there ain't enough upper wing roundels... 😞

Sorry for the hi-jack Beard - I just need to ask Tony a question...

@tonyot I'm going to be a bit cheeky here and ask you - would you know the markings for this aircraft?  Would it be OL*W?

PN Charlton RN

Based in the Middle East,

           o 20.11.41 3 x Ju87 Destroyed.

o 20.11.41 Shot down by a 'friendly' tomahawk, later awarded DFC by RAF.

Wow that is looking excellent,.... and thanks for taking what I said in the manner it was intended! Sorry about the SAAF roundels,.... I was jut responsible for submitting the idea to Hannants and then sending them my research,..... the design of the sheets and the printing was out of my control!

I`m not aware of a photo for this aircraft,..sorry,..... but I would say that it would be all but indentical to the subject of this thread, in desert scheme with white sqn codes OL and a red W. Roundels would be the same too. There is a colour photo of a RNFS Hurricane in the Haynes Manual for the Hurricane which has a blue code letter,.....and what looks like a Temperate Sea Scheme,.... but I don`t think that it is this aircraft,..... I`ll dig out the book and check.

If you are going to be modelling this one I`ll look forward to it,...... I love the RN Fighter Sqn in N.Africa.

Cheers Fella`s,

                      Tony

Thanks Tony.

I never going to take your criticism in any way other than that in which it was intended.

I wasn't blaming you for the lack of SAAF roundels but it is damned annoying when decal makers don't provide enough transfers to make all the options on the sheet. Perhaps I'm just greedy.

Cheers Simon

PS. I don't suppose you're planning on submitting some research to Hannants for a third Fighters over Africa and the Mediterranean part 3? I've nearly finished the first sheet, am well into the second, the KP Spitfire Vc is due out soon and I have three Alleycat early Beaufighter conversions on the way. 😉

Cheers Tony, I have a Sea Hurricane and Hellcat I in progress at the moment (Carrier Ahoy GB) - but I an very interested in this Hurricane as Charlton is not currently represented in my collection as yet and would be a welcome addition and something that is a bit different from the Temperate Sea Scheme..
