To Scratchbuild, or Not to scratch build.

First of all, to start us off, I'm not too sure where this would go, but I thought this might be the right please, if not then my mistake, and I do apologize.

After the multitude of projects I've worked one, I've accumulated random parts, (P40 Tail, Seafire wings, random bits like that.) And want to put the plastic to use. Do you folks think that a "scratchbuilt" plane, or rather one using spare parts would be feasible? I know I could do it physically, I just don't know how it would turn out, or if I should try it.

Advice?

Absolutely!

there is even a what-if modellers site,

http://www.whatifmodellers.com/

and a section here

https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/forum/151-what-if/

Though a successful what-if is based on a backstory,   which can be fun  to think up,

Seafire wings and a P-40, a Curtiss replacement/upgrade for the P-40?

there were some pretty odd US projetc in the wat, the XP55,  XP-67,  the XP-75 used actual bit of other planes,

In October 1942, the contract for two prototypes, designated "XP-75", was signed with the Fisher Body Division of GM. The design concept was to use the outer wing panels from the North American P-51 Mustang, the tail assembly from the Douglas A-24 (SBD), and the undercarriage from the Vought F4U Corsair in a general layout much as in the Bell P-39 Airacobra with the engine located amidships with the contra-rotating propellers driven through extension shafts. At an early design stage, however, Curtiss P-40 Warhawk outer wing panels were substituted for the P-51 panels.

there is also the secret projects site

https://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php

a  browse there could turn up some ideas.

I really liked @Andrew Jones  what-if's that were based on Spitfires, though some got really wacky

Sadly the pics are gone,  though this might prompt a re-up...

on the subject of Spitfire what-ifs @The Wooksta!  has done an entire family of accurate but what if Spitfire/seafires,

all made up...  some are quite subtle variations,  some radical, which requires in depth knowledge of what was done, and then working around that!

hope this gives you some ideas and sources.

cheers

Ahhh, I love the P75,the best part is that since I'm in Ohio, a real one is only a 20 minute drive, as as for the other ideas, it's made the cogs turn in my head. I've already got it all planned out. Thanks for the threads and such, they will be a great inspiration.

Also, anybody know a good place to get parts/parts kits at a decent price? My parts bin is full of car stuff, just limited on plane stuff. I just need a good fuselage to tie in with the wings and rudder. I'm thinking of a twin engine heavy fighter, similar to the F7F or Ta-154. So maybe a Dora or a Jug Fuse?

I had the opposite problem; loads of aeroplane spares but needed/wanted car parts.

I bought a very big box full of parts, including many sets of wheels, off a private seller on Ebay. It cost me less than a new car kit but has supplied parts for many cars so far

I'd suggest you search thru ebay in the plastic model section for 'spares' or 'for repair' and other such terms

Also another few places I've picked up 'donor' models from; keep a look out for old/damaged models at swop-meets/ car boot sales / garage sales. Even contact sellers of second hand kits to see if they have any part built kits or kits with parts missing - unless those kits are rare they can't sell them so they might part with several for just a few $$

Another place is to put a 'Wanted' ad on here but you can't do that yet. You need to have a minimum of 100 postings before you can post in the Selling/Wants section

Given you are in the US, apart from the sound advice from @Black Knight  , and for example you may want to ask the Jeff Garrity of the Rare Plane Detective, I'd ask on Hyperscale Plane Trading,  as they have a large US membership
