That upcoming GB could be the place to have a bash with plenty of tips and help along the way. I can hear the tune again.... il see how Plastix goes here, master class in armour. A 1/48 Tiger 1 isn't too big - as Ozzy says above - it will sit comfortably on your hand. If you don't want a bigger model you could try one in 1/72. My first AFV builds were a 1/72 Panther and a Tiger 1 from Dragon. Be warned though, as I found out, tank building can be quite addictive!. Before I post what I have been up to over the weekend, on this Tiger, it did make me smile when I found some parts I needed to use for one of the early stages. I have often read that some AFV builders move up to 1/35 kits because they find the parts in 1/48 and 1/72 too small - well these were the parts I was looking for in 1/35!!: And this is them in place: I also came across these in the box as well - although I don't need them yet: Anyway.........moving on....... I got my first bit of PE on: ...oh and yes it's quite small too! The top bits for the exhausts are quite small too and quite fiddly to assemble: The tops of the exausts are nicely detailed though: Got some PE bent to shape: The above fit over the fan units: Most of my time, however, was taken with getting all the wheels ready for painting. It seemed to take forever removing the seam that ran around the centre of every tyre!: I leave the bits of sprue on so I have something to hold the parts by when I brush paint them. When 131 was captured it was found to have had the front two road wheels removed - so Dragon provide the caps to go on the wheels behind and there is a small PE part which fits on as well: Then I got my first bit of paint on - thinned Revell's Anthracite acrylic - applied by flat brush. Yeah there does seem to be a lot of smaller parts for this one, but hopefully I won't lose any! No I do not have any PE clamps. For straight bends I tend to use a variety of different thickness metal rulers - for curves I find what ever seems to be a suitable object to bend them round! Yes it's all a bit makeshift in the PlaStix modelling area..........no airbrush, no PE bending tool.............oh well........ So far I have been fortunate in that I have been able to fold and shape any PE how It needs to be without any specialist equipment. Over the past couple of evenings I have been doing some painting/dry-brushing on the fans and exhausts. Painting on the radiator/fan unit parts: Mostly dry-brushed on. Radiator/fan units assembled: Exhausts dry-brushed with Humbrol Gunmetal: Comments and suggestions welcome. I have started painting the wheels but it was slow work - so, at times, while waiting for them to dry I started assembling some of the upper hull parts - I have only added the parts that I think will be easy to paint and do the initial weathering around. Road wheel painting is still ongoing - I must admit I allow myself to get distracted into doing other things on the kit - there are so many of the wheels on a Tiger 1 and I haven't even started painting the tyres yet!! I have been doing some assembling of smaller bits and pieces - like the front machine gun - but I also took the plunge and decided to get the main lower hull painted plus started the weathering process. I tend to have a regular routine - 2 or 3 thinned layers of the base coat - in this case Humbrol 93 - Desert Yellow. Once dry I give everything a very, very watered down wash of Revell's Gunship Grey. Once this has thoroughly dried I use a very fine paint brush to apply very thinned Revell's Anthracite in and around any detail - a kind of targeted wash to create artificial shadow effects. Finally I dry-brushed all over with a lightened version of the Desert Yellow: Not much of an update but it's getting there slowly. Comments and suggestions welcome.
