Another Klear Related Question...Caution! Extreme Muppetry Inside!

Hi All!

I've been working on a Monogram Bearcat. It's taken a couple of weeks on and off, and I'm quite happy with it. So there I was this evening adding the finishing touches and then it hit me...

The scheme I did it in necessitated making up most of the markings with aftermarket. On the port side, a nice, big, white 100. did all the rest of the decalling and added a nice coat of Klear to the gloss coat of Humbrol 14 to seal in the decals. So Mr Muppet here, is having a look a said nearly completed kit, when he notices that the 100 on the starboard side beautifully reads 001. Honestly, Jim Henson would have been proud of me. How I didn't spot the mistake when I could have easily rectified it is beyond the grey matter of Gonzo here.

So the question is....how easy would it be to remove that particular area of Klear to get to the decals underneath. I know a spot of Micro Sol will shift them easily (ask me how I know)...I'm just not sure how to remove the small tactical patch of Klear to shift those decals. I really don't want to strip the whole kit. Anyone else had this problem, or am I the Fozzy Bear of the modelling world?

Should I just try the ammonia or IPA as suggested in the other thread?

Honestly? How could I have been so stoopid?

How you could be so stupid is easy.  You're human!  Yes - it's true.  Humans make mistakes.

If that were my gaff, I'd probably try a little IPA on a cotton bud, and rub gently over the decal, taking care and watching how it's reacting all the way.  If you can get the Klear a bit soft, you stand a reasonable chance of making it work.  I reserve the right to be wrong of course, and bear no responsibility for any of the damage and trauma that this method may cause. ^_^

Hi Mike;

I can see my thought process...lining up the decals to mirror the port side. My brain just didn't register that it was wrong. Funny how you can look at a project all the way through the build and just plain miss something so obvious.

I'll try the IPA. I just need to clean off the patch over those decals. Shifting the decals should be easy once I can get to them. It's funny, but I've been meaning to buy some IPA as it's the key ingredient for cleaning vinyl records!

Thanks! I'll give that a try too. I think what I'll do is paint, decal and Klear coat a test piece and see what works best. I can live with the finished Bearcat for a bit while I work out the best remedy.

I'm still fuming at myself though! 😐

Steve,

Can I suggest you try some really tacky sticky tape and just dab over the decal(s) you wish to remove first. If you are not successful, then try some of the other mediums and suggestions as above. It’s amazing how effective tape can be to remove so many icky sticky things.

Good luck and let us know how you get along. Oh, by the way this image is just for you!!

Sounds like the kind of thing I'd do.

I'd be tempted to leave the model as it is BUT...

Build a small hard-standing base for it with a mirror as the back wall. Then pose the aircraft on it with the starboard side against the back wall. Ask any viewers if they can spot the deliberate mistake you incorporated 🤣🙃

Many thanks for the further suggestions guys! Much appreciated.

Dave...that photo of Beaker clearly replicates the expression on my face when I spotted my mistake. It's only extra annoying as it was a custom job I've been meaning to build for years...35 years to be exact. Finally got around to it and messed it up! 😶

I'll post a photo of the evidence up later.
