lasermonkey Posted April 30, 2018 Posted April 30, 2018 Hi, spurred on by the recent thread on old Humbrol paints, I've been trying to document the entire line of the long-defunct Compucolour/Compucolour II/DBI line of paints. What I have thus far has been complied from various adverts in old copies of Scale Aircraft Modelling magazine and what I actually have in the stash. There are significant gaps though. I have very few of the armour and railway colour designations and even fewer of the standard gloss and standard matt ranges. It appears that Compucolour used some of the old Gloy standard colours, but the numbering isn't consistent. Some numbers tie up with the Gloy designations and some don't. I was wondering if anyone here knows the full range of these paints and wouldn't mind sharing the info? I'm happy to post what info I have, so it would just be a case of adding to that. I'm thinking of doing the same for the Gloy ranges too, as I don't think there's a definitive reference for these either. Surely there's someone else out there sad enough to care? 😉 Best regards and thanks in advance, Mark. p.s. I've always been intrigued as to what caused the acrimonious split with Compucolour. It's really quite unusual and was a very slow-motion train wreck when it happened, back in the pre-web days! 3
lasermonkey Posted April 30, 2018 Author Posted April 30, 2018 (edited) Ok, answering my own thread, but it I guess that having a reference for the various Comp/DBI ranges would be valuable for a few people. Mr T Posted May 1, 2018 Posted May 1, 2018 I cannot add any colour codes, but with the railway colours, there must have been BR Maroon, Cream and an early freight stock grey and some LMS and GWR colours. About the only ones I have left is some PC12 and Supermarine Seaplane Grey.
cngaero Posted May 1, 2018 Posted May 1, 2018 Now there's a blast from the past. I remember the old Compucolour/DBI range well, in fact I've still a few bottles in stock. I always thought that they were lovely paints to work with.
JPuente54 Posted May 21, 2018 Posted May 21, 2018 Chris, a blast from the past indeed! I still have a rather large supply of these paints; their "Tyre Black" is still useable! And, I got these back in the mid to late 80's! Mark, I have two different listings of these paints; I shall dig them out later today or tomorrow and attempt to list them. I believe that their WW2 RA(Italian AF) colors had some 25-30 paints listed. Again, will list. Also, I remember that they were available in both jars and the tinlets. I may have both, but, would have to really do some digging! Mark, the whole story of Gloy/Compucolour/DBI, etc. is rather long and complicated. I believe that Hannants started their Xtracolor line because of this. Chris, I had the same opinion of these paints; whether you used a 'big hairy stick' or an airbrush; they were lovely to use(provided you did your part with thinning, pressure, etc. with the airbrush).
lasermonkey Posted May 22, 2018 Author Posted May 22, 2018 @JPuente54 that would be great if you could add to the list! I had some of their tyre black many, many years ago, but I think it got used up. I remember seeing references to the Compucolor/Compucolor 2 split in Scale Aircraft Modellling, and their commenting on how unseemly it was, but never any hint as to why. It's been bothering me since then! I hate not knowing. Cheers, Mark.
JPuente54 Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 @lasermonkey I found the two lists; one is a single sheet of paper listing the paints in their range; the other is a 12 page booklet listing their paints. Oh, Mr. T, there are a lot of railway colours listed. It's too late tonight(it is 11:46PM as I type this) for me to attempt this, but, will do this tomorrow. It may take up a lot of space. I didn't see/read about the split(or just don't remember it) that you reference in your above posting. I agree with you about wanting to know the why as well as the what. They were great paints; I don't know how accurate they were; I just presumed that they were correct(that could be a whole different thread). But, on the technical side, they covered and adhered well. Joe
JPuente54 Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 Okay guys, here is one of the lists; I got this back in Nov. 1986. I can state that with complete authority as I still have the envelope; and, the postmark is still legible: Hastings, East Sussex, 7:15PM, 7 Nov. 1986. I got the list from Maintrack Models in Hastings(are they still in business?). It is a single sheet of listings. Graeme H Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 Wow, this is a blast from the past, I still have about 20 or more Compucolor tins, a just a few DBI bottles, and agree they were one of the best paints around, still use them from time to time. I never knew of the Gloy connection, and don't think I ever had any. There are probably still a few unique colours in them, I also found I have just a couple of tins of Precision Paints, do remember them, but can't remember using any of them Curious to find that all the ones I have the Compucolor are tins, and all the DBI are bottles, was that the norm? One downside is the way they marked the tins with finely printed round paper discs, some of these discs have gone so no idea what they are supposed to be, I have a couple of tins of FS colours where the have hand written FS numbers on them and no product code, think I got these towards the end, I used to get them from the shop in Keithly, now long gone and totally forgotten by me. I have taken to writing on the tins with a marker what the paint is.
lasermonkey Posted May 23, 2018 Author Posted May 23, 2018 @JPuente54 Many, many thanks for taking the time and effort to type out your catalogue. I appreciate that it's a bit of a slog to get through! There's a lot of info there that I didn't have, so lots of updating to do to my list. Thanks once again and best regards, Mark.
JPuente54 Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 Mark, there's more to come. You are welcome. Thank you for your kind words; it was a slog. Joe
JosephLalor Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 Thanks, Mark and Joe. I remember Compucolor paints being listed in H.J. Walker's ads in Scale Aircraft Modelling in the early '80s, and indeed made the occasional trip from Croydon to Leytonstone. I'm under the impression that FS36099 was in the list, but I could be romancing. That would have been useful for the AV-8B in USMC service.
Dave Swindell Posted May 24, 2018 Posted May 24, 2018 Big thanks to Mark and Joe for posting the Compucolor lists, I've updated the Scalemates listing for Compucolor with this info. I've a few of the RAF colours myself, I had no idea they did so many! Whilst updating the Scalemates database this afternoon a few questions crossed my mind - The Compucolor/Compucolor2 paints I have are all 14ml tins (a la Airfix tall/narrow ones) whilst the DBI Authentics I have are all 18ml bottles (similar but slightly taller than Testors/Aeromaster jars) - is this coincidence, or were Compucolor all in tins and DBI Authentics all in bottles? I note there's also slight discrepancies between Mark and Joe's listing for the CGC German post 1945 colours - is this due to different names used by Compucolor and DBI? @JPuente54 Joe - is the list you're transcribing Compucolor or DBI, and does it state whether tins or bottles? @lasermonkey Mark - you imply your list comes from more than one source, are you able to differentiate between what is Compucolor and what is DBI? The OCD bit of me would like to work out whether DBI issued part of the Compucolor range, all of it, or did they add more clours after they took it over? 1

As a bit of nostalgia, the prices of the jars of paint, thinners, etc., are also listed. Here they are: Enamels, Standard, Authentic, & Special Finishes 18ml jar: 0.50(all prices are Pound Sterling; don't have the symbol on my keyboard) Enamel Thinners 30ml Jar: 0.45 " " 125ml Tin: 0.95 " " 250ml Tin: 1.55 DBI Products Liquid Poly Cement 30ml Jar: 0.50 Super Weld Cement 30ml Jar: 0.50 Metal Cement 30ml Jar: 0.50 Will start on the 12 page booklet later. John Posted May 24, 2018 Posted May 24, 2018 I was looking at Mark's list further up the thread which I assumed was Compucolor? John

So did I to start with but he does say Comp/DBI, I suspect it's an amalgamation of both from different sources, however as you've pointed out there do seem to be differences.
lasermonkey Posted May 24, 2018 Author Posted May 24, 2018 My list was compiled from various adverts in old copies of Scale Aircraft Modelling, what I actually have and the lady who lists DBI paints on eBay (and from whom I have acquired my DBI stash) . I had, possibly incorrectly, assumed that they would be identical. There are a few errors in my list which I think mostly stem from the lady in question being elderly and not having the best vision (I've been trying to help her correct her list). It would also seem that there must be a few changes in the numbering system when DBI took over the range. There's a few numbers that seem to be different, though they all appear to be in the Standard ranges. Cheers, Mark. 1
JPuente54 Posted May 25, 2018 Posted May 25, 2018 (edited) First, I have NO idea how the double posting of Part 3 happened. I was trying to respond to your enquiry, Dave when it occurred. Mods, if you can/want to remove the second "Part 3" posting, feel free. I have words to describe computers; all of them would result in Mike deleting the post; and, "putting me on a 31 day holiday". And, he'd be correct to do so. Second, Dave, the listing has a photo-copy of a photograph of 3 jars of the paints(18ml), and a 30ml jar/bottle of thinners; they have "Compucolor(the USA spelling, no 'u') Authentic Color" on all the labels. It also has "Compucolor Authentic Color, De Bens Industries, Limited, Newtown, Powys" alongside the photo. The other listing in a 12 page booklet with a light yellow cover also shows 3 glass jars and a jar/bottle of thiners; but, "DBI Authentic Color" on the label instead. The interesting thing is that the photo is identical to the "Compucolor" one referenced above! Oh, and the brief address is the same. HTH Joe If you guys look; you'll find a couple of differences in the WW2 German aircraft colours, too. In @lasermonkey's list: CG28 is RLM 05 Elfenbein(Ivory); CG29 is RLM 21 Weiss. My list doesn't have CG29. I just checked the 12 page listing; it matches lasermonkey's list. Go figure. Edited May 25, 2018 by JPuente54 more info 1 1
John Posted May 26, 2018 Posted May 26, 2018 I can't help with DBI I'm afraid. I don't have any and never have. I'm not sure I've even seen a pot in the flesh, so to speak. I'll see what I have from Compucolor. The address on my tins is Trade Exports Ltd, Manningtree, England. John
fightersweep Posted May 30, 2018 Posted May 30, 2018 @lasermonkey Thanks for starting the thread and the heads up on the DBI paint on eBay....I've been building the stash since. I do remember these paints being advertised back in the day, but being a poor teenager, they were a bit out of reach for me, so it has been nice to finally try some out. What superb paints! Where are paints like this now? I've just used the USAAF Neutral Grey to brush paint the underside of an Airfix Mustang. The finish is absolutely perfect, and I doubt I would get as smooth a finish with an airbrush. I also picked up some Compucolour a while back, and have been using the aluminium. That too is probably the best aluminium paint I have ever used. Flawless. It did occur to me that the DBI paints are the first bottle paints I have ever used in 40 years of modelling! I just need to figure out how to stop a skin forming over the paint once I put the lid back on, despite putting the cap on tightly and keeping the cardboard insert inside the lid! Just wish I could have got some of the basic RAF camo colours from the DBI range. Still, happy with what I did get! Steve
