Wilks Posted April 30, 2018 Share Posted April 30, 2018 Managed to move this one over the finish line yesterday. My third in what will be a long line of S&M Models 1/72 RAAF Canberra's. The kit is a good one and I thoroughly enjoyed researching and putting this one together. Details of the build for those interested can be found here: This particular aircraft was inspired by an all around good guy, Australian Aviation Historian and fellow modeler Roger Lambert. Roger and his platoon were the benefactors of this Magpie's work when on patrol in SVN. Enough said ;). Martin One in the same. Happy to elaborate on aspects of the build should you need it. Suffice to say it is a nice kit with no real vices. Given the closed canopy that is so prominent on this type take extra steps to ensure there is no dust inside when you close it all up. Make sure it is sealed up before you start sanding. I've been up close with her at Point Cook RAAF Museum (including crawling around inside) and your model brought back great memories! I have a personal interest in that plane having crawled around inside and my cousin Nev flew her many times out of Phan Rang Air Base in Vietnam in 1969. Are you able to add the No 2 Squadron Magpie emblem to the lightning bolt on the tail? There is a photo of her at https://raafdocumentary.com/2sqn-history/ clearly showing the Magpie. There is one more detail that can be added to A84-236 which makes her unique... There is a rectangular patch riveted into the fuselage above the nose cone from a mission on 10 August 1969 when my cousin embedded shrapnel from his own bomb and blew apart the bomb-aimer window. Ground crew cut out the shrapnel and riveted in the patch and that scar is still there on A84-236 where she sits at Point Cook RAAF Museum. I have lots of photos of A84-236 including close-ups of that patch and the Magpie emblem if you are interested in adding accuracy (and uniqueness) to your model. Again, great work! Rabbit Leader Posted December 8, 2023 Share Posted December 8, 2023 @KennyD, I think you’ll find that Antoney has faithfully represented A84-236 accurately during its Vietnam era service when the Magpie motif was not present over the red tail flash. I’d have to consult references, however I’m pretty sure No. 2 Squadron applied the magpie well after they returned back from Vietnam to Australia. The link you’ve provided dates the ‘magpie’ photo to 1980, which is also well after 236 returned home. The additional riveted patch is of interest, however how visible would this be in 1/72 scale? I have only ever found one photo of A84-236 in Country, taken before my cousin Nev stuck an extra hole in the fuselage. And the patch is small but definitely big enough to be visible as a 'custom variation' from other A-84s, even if just distinguished by a touch of paint...
