Next build. I am going to take the Hobby Boss 1/35 TAS-44M prototype and then turn it in to a production version (based on cold war Soviet tank thinking) which is being used in the Hugarian uprising... so things I am going to do

1) level the wheels *the rear wheels are lower than the front and the mud-guard (what ever it is called over the wheels) slope which I dont like

2) move the drive wheels to the rear

3) change the rear deck engine louvres (they are big chasms in the prototype, going to look at mesh and smaller grids)

4) rebuild the turret (prototype = Panther-esque) to make it curved and "cast"

5) replace the barrel with the t-55 barrel

6) maybe alter the slopes of the glacis and the rear deck (it covers the mud-guard (what ever it is called over the wheels)) - if i do this I will add "boxes" a la T-55

6) mesh armour (either Schuerzen like "proper" or ad-hoc welded spaced from the hull)

so in short,

cold war, soviet design inspired TAS-44M from 1956 Hungarian uprising

going to look to re-start my scratch building/modding skills so things above are subject to change....

photos will be forth-coming

Hi Rob

Nothing short about that, sounds like quite a project and I'll watch, with maybe a little cheering you on, LOL.

Take care,

Lloyd

thanks Lloyd....

and of course the "mud flap things over the wheels" are fenders... so they will be altered to be parallel to the ground (purely because i dont like the way the slope looks AND I think that moving the driver while to the rear can only be done by making the fender level)

box and contents...  extra are the T-55 barrel and the Hungarian markings.... need to do some maths first to work out what adjustments make sense

Hi Rob

Where on earth do you find these projects 😬, that’s a handful of work there. Interesting subject. Curious to see how it goes.......👍

Yeah why not.......rare subject matter, only one soft steel prototype ever made.

good luck

started on the turret... split the mantlet to give a central moving portion only, t-55 gun fitted (mantlet just resting on the turret) and then curved the front. I have the lower silhouette for the rear done, need to work out the upper now. The hatches will move back a bit and am considering a slightly curved roof

Interesting model. Looks little bit like Panther.

it did yes.... erm... no going back now..... turret slowly taking shape (need to "skim" it really but the basic shape is coming on) and attacked the upper hull.. want it vertically sided rather than the slope the prototype came with... all edges are rough - think there is a lot of sanding/filling ahead

bank holiday afternoon... suspension on (swapped the rear to the middle to allow me to lower the return rollers and moved the drive wheels to the rear (think they are level).... also started building up the turret. Stug "slope" and A13turret ring starting me off)...

all very cack-handed I know but....

fenders are now horizontal(ish), drive wheels are rear mounted and level(ish) 3 return rollers per side... turret is starting to take shape. plan is to cover the mess I am making in very thin plasti-card then coat in Mr Surfacer 500 for casting texture (test run on off cuts shows it should work) and to make it all look "one". Biggest worry now is whether there are enough track links to handle the altered shape that the ne configuration will bring - if not, will have to do side skirts a la Chieftan to try to hide them 😉

making progress... turret moved slightly further back and lowered (original had about 5mm rim above the hull) to be flush with the upper hull.. Turret is slowly taking shape. I am hoping that when i go to the Mr Surfacer stage it will become a lot more "singluar" rather than patches.... (still gaps that need to be filled as well of course)

hull and turret continue to evolve. started on the rear engine deck as well... one thing i haven't quite wored out is the exhaust outlet - the T-55 has it out the side (roughly where I have the left hand hatch) - was tempted to do similar but have 2 "normal" exhausts straight out with a mesh "cage" round thre (thinking tha one i have the thing done (but not painted) I may look at urban up-armour for the 1956 uprising (so mesh panels along the sides and perhaps on the front glacis)

Hi Rob. Sorry I'm a bit late to the party but it looks like you have been making good progress so far.

Kind regards,

Stix

Very interesting project, I built one of these once, but feel apart on the tracks, which IIRC didn't really want to fit. This put me off the kit, and it's languished trackless for years now.

Sairou... yeah the tracks - I am leaving them for now. Not sure I will have enough links because of the changes I have made - if i dont then I will make some side-skirts....

I'd definitely see if you could find some T-55 tracks or something to fit. I don't know if any aftermarket company released TAS tracks yet.

more progress... no room on the rear of the engine deck for 2 sets of grills (eg T-55). Used the kit louvres to fill the gap! The white on the d=fender is the exhaust cover (copied from the Walker Bulldog). Both exhausts will be covered by it (using the kit exhausts - just the ends will be seen really).

On the turret, I am going to use Mr Surfacr 500 for the casting texture BUT not used it before. If I want "furniture" on the turret- will that stick to the Mr Surfacer or better to attach now & Mr Surfacer around (thinking hooks, hand rails (think they can go on after) , vision ports etc)

Nice work Rob, with regard to using Mr Surfacer I would attach everything to the turret first then treat with Mr Surfacer.
