Good evening Ladies & Gentlemen,

 

I'm going to start this later next week as I have a lot on right now.

 

But having un-boxed it and sorted through some resin and bits I had a look at some books and thanks to 29Triplex I also have the decals to make the 'centrefold' from The World's Great Interceptor Aircraft.

 

Will need to make a couple of changes to the kit to back date it to an early F.3.  Mostly the flare dispensers to be removed.

Why not back date it to an F2?

Just a trendy paint job and your there. That would be unique.

I’ll be following this. I’m looking to date mine back to the operational F.2 - 229OCU - to compliment my F.2 prototype build. It has the same tail scheme as that above but the ‘arrow’ beneath the cockpit is a yellow/orange horizontal split.

I like the idea of doing that as well, and was looking at the parts from an IDS and an ADV with a view to doing this.

 

The extra length is in part numbers 222 & 223 which compromises the jet pipe fairing.  The IDS kit will need to donate the base of the fin as well as parts 227 & 230 are too long as well.

 

This leaves you with the problem of having to raid an IDS kit for these parts and leaving the rest unusable, unless you wanted to build a 'WhatIf GR.5'. :wonder:

 

Alternatively you could email Revell Parts and claimed you 'lost them' which I could not endorse. ;)

 

Given that you can pick up a Revell IDS for £20-£30 and the cost of a resin conversion kit would probably run to that anyway I'm planning a ADV prototype once the decals become available.

As a huge Tornado fan I look forward to seeing this one finished. I have the same interceptors book as you. I must have got it 30 odd years ago now!

Ah, if only proper decals had been available when I did my prototype. I had to fight long and hard with my own custom versions just to get to this:

Right-oh!  Progress has started.

 

I was planning on not getting that much done but 'fortunately' I had my appendix out yesterday so I have some time sat on my bottom so let the games begin!

Started by removing the flare dispensers and sorting out which bits I do and don't need.  You can also see the last bits and bobs being done to my Shackleton MR.2.

 

I used my hospital stay to brush up on some reading.  Ian Black and David Gledhill deserve a knighthood for services to modelling!

Wowzer! Things must have changed since the days when I had my appendix out. That involved 3 hours of emergency surgery, 1 hour of recovery 2 hours of swearing, 3 days of Pethediene and ‘then’ I was able to use my hands!

Yours must have perforated.  I can't remember how long the last appendectomy I saw (1989?) took, but not three hours!  And I never nursed a post-op patient who needed three days of Pethidine.  Yours was no straightforward case, dear comrade.  Good that we still have you!

Excellent.as someone who avoid's modern jet's like the plague and foolishly bought this kit last week I'm pulling up a chair for this one I love the F3!

Be very wary of the Revell instructions: there are errors everywhere, many of which are discussed on the Revell-actions site.  One major “gotcha” is that the wing pivot part numbers are transposed: the cut out with small locating pin in the upper rim of the pivot should be forward.

 

Some modellers have departed from the suggested assembly sequence in order to minimise filling and sanding, for instance assembling the intake tunnels then building the centre and rear fuselage around them and adding the intake sections before then installing the front fuselage and cockpit module.

 

General Melchett’s thread in Work in Progress here dealing with the GR. 1/GR. 4 is also very worthy of attention, particularly if you are planning to build your model with the wings at the minimum sweep position.

Thanks, I have the General's thread, and Sebastien's pinned.  I have built 2 before and am learning every time, I think that all instructions are a bit 'Pirate's Code' but as you say there are some howlers.

 

I am building the main fuselage and nose separately, that seems to make the most sense to me as the seams are mostly hidden then.

Thanks. I don't think it perforated as much as disintegrated. Apparently it was a bit of a mess in there and my scar looks like I've been in a shark attack. :o

Nose weight added, €0.10 x5 + €0.02 x 3 for 40g of conformal nose weight.  Bluetacked the coins to each other, but not to the airframe.

 

Looks a bit like a Radar set from the side as well!

Sorry everybody, a combination of great weather football, golf, cycling and tennis, both the doing of and watching of has stalled my build.

 

I got this far and will continue in WiP.
