NealParkes
I have been able to get some work done on the Hurricane so I thought I should bring you up to speed with my progress. I started putting the paint on the lower sides of the aircraft, first some Tamiya XF-2 White on the starboard wing and then some Tamiya XF-1 Black on the port side:Untitled by Neal, on Flickr I then masked off the wings and sprayed the central part using Vallejo Metal Colour Dark Aluminium: Untitled by Neal, on Flickr I also sprayed the undercarriage and for this I wanted a bit of contrast so used some Tamiya XF-16 Flat Aluminium:Untitled by Neal, on FlickrUntitled by Neal, on Flickr I then turned my attention to the topside, I decided that I wanted to give these AML mask sets a go, now I know that the aircraft I am building does not have the ‘A’ camouflage pattern but I am sure it will look good enough for me:Untitled by Neal, on Flickr The paints I will be using on the two main camo colours are Tamiya XF-52 Earth and Tamiya XF-81 RAF Dark Green:Untitled by Neal, on Flickr So after spraying the XF-52 I got the mask set out and although not intended for this kit I found it went on very easily:Untitled by Neal, on FlickrUntitled by Neal, on Flickr Here is the bit I always look forwards to but always have a bit of trepidation about removing the masking:Untitled by Neal, on Flickr I think it has turned out rather nice!, I will be using these AML sets again on future builds:Untitled by Neal, on Flickr There we are guys and gals you are up to speed on the build, next step a gloss coat before decaling. See you soon and thank you for looking. Neal
Andre B
I recently used the AML mask set on an Airfix Spitfire Mk. Va and can agree that they are easy to use albeit they do not make up accurate for a camouflaged Spitfire. One have to correct the masks on some places. Byt they are cheap, easy to use and if handled with care usuable for more then one kit. In fact I am in the process to use the same masks for a third Spitfire... Stuart Thanks Stuart, I wasn’t intending on doing anything with the black. Maybe it does need something to tone it down I may try a dry brush of rubber black or nato black and see what happens.
Courageous
As Håkan said, masks have worked well.
NealParkes
Hi guys, I have got some more progress to report on for you. First I prepared the kit for the application of decals by spraying a gloss coat on, for this I used Mr Hobby GX100 Superclear III thinned 50-50 with Mr Hobby Self Levelling Thinners:Untitled by Neal, on FlickrUntitled by Neal, on Flickr And here she is ready for the decals of which there are not that many to put on:Untitled by Neal, on Flickr And then I started to put the decals on, I’m using a different setting solution, Mr Mark Setter and Mr Mark Softner, they seem quite good so far:Untitled by Neal, on FlickrUntitled by Neal, on Flickr There you go guys you are up to speed on the build. I’m hoping to get all the decals on today and also a sealing coat, then I can start some light weathering tomorrow. Neal
NealParkes
And here is the result after the decals have gone on:Untitled by Neal, on FlickrUntitled by Neal, on Flickr I’m quite happy with the way she is looking now! Just need to do a few more coats of Mr Mark Softer on a couple of the decals to get them down properly. The good thing though is that I don’t need to apply another gloss coat before weathering as the decals aren’t near the panel lines and all I am going to do is a quick panel line wash with some oils. So that is the plan for tomorrow get the wash on and then it is on the home straight for the completion!

Bedders
That's looking really good. The masks for the camo have come out beautifully. And I'll make a note of your glossing technique too. Justin
NealParkes
So I started the weathering today, I am going to be keeping it very light with just a panel line wash. To do this I used some Abteilung oils and made a custom tone out of Smoke and Dark Rust, I didn’t wasn’t anything too stark:Wash on and wash off! by Neal, on Flickr I then applied this trying to keep it to the panel lines only:Wash on and wash off! by Neal, on FlickrWash on and wash off! by Neal, on Flickr I let that dry a couple of hours and then wiped of the wash using turps substitute and some cotton buds and kitchen towel. I think I am quite happy the way it has turned out:Wash on and wash off! by Neal, on FlickrWash on and wash off! by Neal, on Flickr I am now back at work for few shifts (5 days of 12 hours shifts the joys! 😓) so it will let the oils dry nicely before coming back with a matt coat to dull everything down a bit. Then it will be final assemble time. Thanks for looking. Neal

NealParkes
Hi chaps and chapesses. I got a bit of bench time today and have made some more progress so thought I should show you what I have been up to. Firstly now that the oils had a good time to dry out a bit I applied a matt coat, for this I used Tamiya XF-86 thinned 50-50 with some X-20A, I tried to avoid the metallic areas on the underside of the aircraft when I sprayed the matt coat:Untitled by Neal, on FlickrUntitled by Neal, on Flickr I then started to take off the mask from the canopy and also removed the main part as I wanted to have this posed open, I also started to apply some exhaust staines using Tamiya weathering powder:Untitled by Neal, on FlickrUntitled by Neal, on Flickr I also started to apply some of the weathering powers to the exhausts using the burnt blue and burnt red to try and give a “heated” look to them:Untitled by Neal, on Flickr So next I need to get Rodney into the pit and fix the canopy in place, also I need to get the hurricane on its legs and then pop the lumps and bumps on and we should be done! Thanks for looking. Neal
