Hawker Hart / Audax? K5234 - help sought

Recommended Posts

I have a photograph of the rear fuselage of K5234, which my uncle crashed in 1938 or 1939.  It has a squadron marking partly visible on the rear fuselage. I am without any relevant references, and would be very grateful for any help in identifying:

1. Aircraft type - Hart or Audax I think. He always said the Hart was his favourite aircraft.

2. Squadron? May be 113?

3. Squadron marking on fuselage?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Richard

you will get more (or better) results if you can post the photo,   though the serial should give you some information,  like Hart or Audax,   Air Britain has books listing serials.  I suspect @Graham Boak  is likely to have these, and he should get a notification from this.

I just googled "Hawker Hart K5234"

https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/dblist.php?Year=1939&sorteer=datekey&page=3

googling Hawker Audax K5234 gets this

https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/wiki.php?id=2323

but that list another serial.

there seems to be a listing for

Hawker Audax Mk I. Owner/operator: RAF 4 FTS. Registration: K5234.

here

http://www.211squadron.org/rd_campbell.html

there are detail of K5235,

which may or may not help, but perhaps of use for general airframe details

K5234 was an Audax.  Not a squadron aircraft but with 4 FTS at Abu Sueir from 16.4.36.  Flew into ground attacking target Abu Sueir range 17.5.39.  Struck off charge 14.8.39.  There is a photo of her at the right hand end of a line up of 4 FTS aircraft in Air Britain's The K File.   It has a small letter V under the rear cockpit, and what appears to be a yellow band covering the side of the fuselage starting behind the exhaust and including the roundel and serial.  There is a large marking on the upper wing,: the shape isn't quite clear but I suggest a triangle centrally placed with the point facing forward, the base extending to the inner side of the ailerons.  Probably yellow again.

Thank you very much gentlemen. I think my uncle was responsible for the 17.5.39 episode! I will see if I can post the photo.

That picture is  actually a Hart trainer.

Oops! My mistake. I didn't read the caption properly. I just saw Audax in it and posted it.

Sorry!
