rob Lyttle
Spent an hour fiddling with bits and pieces - scratch -building some aerials and stuff. The Airfix ones were seriously clumsy looking. Also around the windscreen, and a couple of wipers. The hostess situation hasn't really resolved yet.... On the right is the new girl. I don't mean to be unkind but.... Figure on the left is the other gunner from the AC47. Just found him hiding in the Box. His partner gunner was the basis for gender reassignment to emerge as the radiant Stephanie! The arms are the giveaway. I think I may start again, and try for a more Stephanie - like outcome., instead of an Olympic shotput contestant.
Azgaron
Looking a lot better! Aren't there railroad figures that are usable as contestants for the role as stewardess? Håkan
rob Lyttle
Not sure, @Azgaron. Is railway HO/OO gauge around 1/72 ? They always look smaller when I see a railway display. I figured OO was short for 1/100. Serious shortage of civilian figures in modelling world
Biggu
Ok, Rob, silly question time....................... when you are foiling the wings................ how large of a piece of foil do you use? One large piece, and then burnish it down or a few smaller pieces? I would also suspect, that for the fuselage, it is multiple small pieces, so burnishing is easier and reduces the chances of unsightly folds in the foil? Your end results are, once again excellent..... you are quickly becoming the master of this technique........many thanks for the tutoring classes..... HO is 1/87 So I guess OO would be the best option, but yeah, there is a shortage of civilian figures, or we aren't looking at the right places. Check the Preiser range. Found a few here in 72nd. rob Lyttle
A Milliput Makeover, including some hair extensions around the helmet. Let's see how she paints up. @Biggu, the real issue that governs size is compound curves. So, a wing is nearly always a single curve over the aerofoil section. On the DC 3, I went from the ridge outboard of the nacelle to the wingtip attachment line. Italieri represented it on their wing, and I reproduced it on the Airfix by foiling to the outside of the band, and then putting the wingtip piece over it to the inside of the band, so double layered on the joint line. Doing a big piece, I like to keep the backing on most of the Ali tape, just a strip peeled where I'm going to start -- in this case along that ridge next to the nacelle. You need to make sure the foil is aligned to cover the area required and not wander off the edge. The backing prevents a sticky shambles here. Once you are happy with the alignment, then you can get the peeled starting edge stuck down around the front spar area. Don't worry about the leading edge or trailing edge. The Golden Rule is, get the middle on and work out. Get access to the edge of the backing, and you can start pulling it back with one hand while your other thumb slides along top of the wing smoothing the tape on, right along the middle. That's not really on message for answering all you asked..... but I'm not deleting it now!😃 I'll come up with some other coherent notes. Remember, don't try this stuff out on your Pride and Joy. Get some practice in on an old junk kit you don't even like!
rob Lyttle
Wing top panel for reference, including extra panel layers to break up the uniformity Also take a look at the Voodoo thread I linked for Nikolay. Some compound curves dealt with there, and other issues with foil. Edited May 21, 2018 by rob Lyttle link
rob Lyttle
I did a few mods on the rejected hostess, and with an adjustment to her legs and shortened arms she is much improved. She is on the left. On the right is No.2 gunner girl. By a strange quirk of Milliput the breeze has caught her skirt a bit! The shoes are larger than required. Funny the things you can get involved with....😕 Great link, Hakan, to the railway modelling supplies site.
Azgaron
Looks a lot better, both of them! Glad it was of some use! I hope you can find suitable figures, even if some will need som work. Håkan
rob Lyttle
Gotta few bits sorted and I'm inching forward. The big Reg no. decals are on the wings and the carrier film isn't looking too bad. I took the precaution of separating the first D from the main block, and trimmed the hyphen right down. That is where it's most visible, in that big space between Props drilled out and fitted with Ali tube shafts, and the second cowling is shaved down ready for some Ali cooling gills Remember I was going on about the Javelin kit getting the bare metal finish...? George Beaton's plane is apparently the only option, so I need a "GHB" on the tail fin. Well, I have a solution, and it's on the Italieri decal sheet. The Classic Air option has the Reg HB-ISC. I reckon I can make a G out of the C, and the HB is sitting right there!😃 If I can pull that off, that would make it 4 Airframes out of 1 sheet. Cool...!

rob Lyttle
The door is open, and hung! Blank inside of course, but hung nevertheless. A stewardess or two will brighten up the scenario. And some steps again. As for the Javelin, I realised I need black airframe numbering for XH898 on the side of the fuselage- the kit ones are white. Wrong number of course, but it would have got me started. Think I've rounded up enough lettering to sort it in black.🎯

Well, the fancy sets of Preiser figures look good, but at S20.00 a go + transatlantic postage, I'm out! I had a look in AC Models today - they're good on railway stuff as well. Some lovely little pre-painted figures. Expensive as you'd expect. But also these... The cart is included! By Model Scene Accessories. Afraid that's the best my phone camera can manage! So at OO/HO they're pretty close. The caption is- Hikers, Public Service personnel, Scouts & Cart. Something to work with, anyway. See how they paint up. As for the cart.....? Azgaron
Glad you found other usable figures. Sounded a bit pricy with the Prieser figures and shipping on top of that! That chart looks like it belonged in another time period! Håkan
rob Lyttle
For the record, here's the process for Ali gills on the cowlings.... Strip cut long enough to go around, and marked for oil-cooler and exhaust manifold. And mark the hinge line and flap spacing. Make the cuts. Give the contact adhesive time to dry on both surfaces, and get the strip on straight. Mine turned out to be a fraction short - may be the adhesive added a tiny amount to the circumference - I'm going to cover it with a strip of foil later. Front edge needs filing down, and excess glue removed, ready for the front curve using foil tape. This needs doing in 4 quadrants. Here's the first one, and trimmed back, So that covers the 12 o'clock to 9 o'clock section. Next... See what I mean about getting the middle on and work out to the edges around the curve?😃 (next page...) rob Lyttle
Here's the last quarter being applied. Just needs trimming back along the front of the Ali ring. Then check out the cuts between the vent panels, and give the whole cowling a roll around to put some curvature on each of the gills, as they tend to stay flat between each cut. And you're good to go. Front centre is the exhaust manifold cover to fit over the front of the new exhaust pipe. Ali tube fitted to take the prop, and the front of the nacelle drilled out to take the end of the tube through into the UC bay. Sorted.

Don't know if it's still operational - the dates for "last updated" were years ago. I sometimes think there's a bunch of derelict stuff left lying around the web. Maybe wrong, and it's just an old-fashioned kind of site doing great trade!
rob Lyttle
So, I was outside sorting shed stuff and wilting in the heat, when an unusual roar materialised overhead. And what lumbers into view...? Only a DC 3!⚠ Military C47 paint job, but still.... He disappeared behind the houses, and must have done a 270 and next thing he's coming in at no more than 1000' right on the approach to Southampton Airport runway 02 . Didn't sound like a landing but I'd better check it out. Who else has got one flying, apart from the BBMF.? Of course, my phone was indoors at the time
