Popular Post tonyot
Hiya Folks, Well it took longer than usual, but here is my first (of many!) 1/72nd Airfix B-25 Mitchell, which I have finished in the markings of Wing Commander Paul, OC of 98 Sqn based at RAF Dunsfold (now the home of BBC`s Top Gear and ex Hawker/ BAe Harrier and Hawk factory). The broomstick was applied by groundcrew after the OC told them to get the station cleaned up,.... their response being that they were awaiting a delivery of brushes,..... so he told them to get out into the nearby woods and make their own!! The model was brush painted using Tamiya Olive Drab and Aeromaster Neutral Grey with the partialyl scrubbed away D-Day stripes on the upper surfaces were reproduced using white pencil crayon with weak watercolour black stripes,..... the other retained D-Day stripes were decals from Xtradecal. The main decals were from DK Decals, although the additional `Derby Coat of Arms' marking on the right side and the serials for FV914 came from the old Frog decals, the correct taller fin flashes came from a Revell Halifax and the smaller B Type roundel above the wings came from the spares box,...... using photos of the real aircraft before and after D-Day from various sources as reference. From these pics it showed that the rubber de icer boots had been removed and the bare metal areas below overpainted with a slightly darker shade (RAF Dark Green or fresh OD?) which had chipped and peeled quite a bit. Here are some of the pic`s of the real aircraft which were used as reference; fv914 should have broom on nose by Tony OToole, on Flickr 320__0004 by Tony OToole, on Flickr And with that,....here is the model; DSCF2841 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF2840 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF2835 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF2842 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF2834 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF2836 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF2838 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF2831 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF2827 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF2824 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF2822 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF2826 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF2823 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF2845 by Tony OToole, on Flickr Sorry if there were too many pics! Cheers Tony Edit,..... I should add that the nose gun was usually removed from RAF/ Dutch Navy Mitchell`s after D-Day and stowed on the right hand side of the nose, to be fitted if needed, so this is what I`ve done here,..... I read that it was usually a ,303in Browning rather than the larger, heavier .50cal. which would need more than one man to lift! Also,..... the serial would appear to be re painted further back and lower down from the original position behind the rear side windows when D-Day stripes were applied, as they cannot be seen on a photo of this aircraft with stripes applied. Sgt.Squarehead
Me too.....The worn away invasion stripes are brilliant work, possibly the most convincing finish I've seen.
Convair
The white stripes painted over with O.D. (or with the white paint "removed", according to post D-day directives) are especially interesting. An effect not frequently seen on kits. Of course, there are many other very very good things in this montage/painting, just look at the photos. A super model (no machine gun in the nose? ). cngaero
I can only echo what the guys before have said, the finishing and weathering is superb. The worn invasion stripes and the under nacelle weathering really bring the Mitchell to life. More to come?........I can't wait. Thanks for sharing the photos with us.

The D-Day stripes were scrubbed away to improve the camouflage from above but some, like this aircraft still had quite a lot of chalking and staining left visible. As for the nose gun,.... after D-Day the RAF/ Dutch Navy units tended to stow the gun on the right hand side of the nose position and only fit it into place if needed, so that is what I`ve done here. Glad you liked the model, Cheers Tony

modelling minion
Brilliant work Tony, as usual. As others have said the partially removed invasion stripes are particularly effective, amongst the best I have seen. I look forward to your next one.

Seahawk
I love both your research and your models. Your perceptive and observant commentaries show that you see what is actually there rather what you think ought to be there (as I tend to). The modelling is, as ever, superb (I'm loving those Liberators as well). The finish is as excellent as usual but I especially love those semi-effaced invasion stripes. Please don't tell me you're still producing these marvels from a tea tray on your lap! I have been rather put off this kit by @general melchett's review in Airfix Modelworld where he said (IIRC) one half of the rear fuselage was 1.5mm deeper than the other, leading to a risk of the tailplane being fitted awry. Did you experience any similar problems?

Did you experience any similar problems? Yup,.... still modelling from my tea tray,.......here is the Mitchell having its invasion stripes worked on! DSCF2816 by Tony OToole, on Flickr So glad that you like this one and the Liberator`s,..... re the mis matched fuselage halves,..... no mine were fine,...... no problems at all. The panel lines along the side of the furward fuselage are a little deep and could do with filling,..... but that is easy enough and I really rate this kit,..... so much that I am already building another and have more planned! Melchie was building a pre production kit and it looks as if they have sorted the problem out. I cockped up by putting the `A' on the right hand side of the nose slightly too far back,.... but that`s like eh! I just wish that I had looked more closely at the ref photo and not just lined it up with the other side,..... probably rushing as the missus had dropped a low baller on me just as I was in the middle of decalling! general melchett
Great job Tony, nice to see you build this as a Mk II, I'll certainly be building one or two for our Bomber Command SIG. I mentioned it to the team at Telford after they asked me how I'd got on with the kit... if there was an issue it seems to have been ironed out.
