Beggsy
More modifications, more and more and more. Will they ever end? Water release doors were added. I found this method much easier than scribing them. The front end got some new engine inlets of the boxy variety, and a turret location that's been covered over with a simple sheet metal plug The inlets are made of plastic card and blended smooth with putty. Almost paint time....almost.....
Skids
Nice I like the water release doors. Really can't wait to see the paint go on
Beggsy
Paint like this? Or were you expecting something a little more metallic? This is Valejo gloss black primer for metals. Not sure about it, the surface seems a little rough.
Skids
Was hoping for shiny but looks good. The black looks a bit mottled on the right wing or is that just the light playing tricks?

A bit of both, I think. On 6/7/2018 at 11:53 PM, Skids said: Was hoping for shiny but looks good. OK, how about this then? I sprayed it with a 50/50 mix of Vallejo Aluminium and Duraluminium, and then post shaded it with each colour in their pure form. It may look a bit much for a new or restored aircraft, but for an old airplane now serving a second life as a firefighter, I think it will be pretty good! I also painted the engine cylinders and washed them with Tamiya panel line wash, Black and then Brown. This has been really fun!!
Beggsy
I build the spray mechanism out of thin plastic rod: It was painted with Vallejo Gunmetal Grey: I also had a go at making the rear turret location a little less visible with some putty and re-sanding/painting.
Beggsy
Progress continues. Painting this thing continues to be highly enjoyable. Firstly, the engines were completed. This involved adding the front of the crank-case and also some photo-etch fuel lines to the cylinders. I had to make new shafts for the propellers, as the Airfix parts were short-shot, barely present on the sprues. Then the real fun! First I varnished the entire model. Then I added some Vallejo chipping medium to a masked area around the engine nacelles and then painted some black/grey mix over the top. After giving it a few minutes to dry, I was able to HEAVILY chip it by brushing water onto it, then going at it with a toothpick and a stiff brush. Here it is after both engines were finished. The rear glazing is in the process of being masked for some similar treatment with yellow paint. I've kind of tried to match the chipping pattern to this photo....kind of...... I really enjoyed that! Soon I'll have engines and horizontal tails attached.
Christer A
That chipping came out great! Lovely metallic finish as well!
Beggsy
It's really starting to look like a plane with vertical tails and landing gear installed. I also finished the engines, going to attach them once I sort out the exhaust pipes (once again, a modification to the kit). It's getting there!
Beggsy
In the race to get this done before the deadline, I forgot to keep this up to date! Here are some more photos. The engines got attached. I also did some closer looking at photos and realised there was a yellow patch on the ends of the wings, which was added. I custom-printed some decals which were very successful! Added a small bit of photo etch around the entry hatch: The engines needed another mod: the exhaust pipe. It didn't match either of the kit parts, so I cut away one cowl flap and added a piece of tube: Some washes on the landing gear. Black for the legs, grey for the wheels themselves: One more of the whole thing. That's all for now, getting very close here! Stop Press!!!! Just realised from these photos that the ailerons and elevators are white as well!!!! Guess that's going to be the next thing to do!

Beggsy
It's done! Photos are in the gallery, but here's the whole lot that I took, since I could only put 5 there. Some details: And finally, some more artistic shots with the piece of the real aircraft, and on a VFR sectional chart of Alaska: That's the lot! This has been a challenging build, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for everyone's kind words and help with references! And special thanks to my girlfriend for letting me use her nice camera for the final pictures! Until the next build, Beggsy
