MikeR
Site blocked, probably for anyone outside the US. From F-16.net: LINK. Reuters: LINK. As for how likely? The Czech Republic uses Gripens, so if logic applies then the Slovaks would be better off going for the same type if they're considering sharing defence assets with their former countrymen. Mike. upnorth
It's not the first time talk of a new fighter for Slovakia has been floated. They were talking about F-16s a decade or so ago and nothing came of it. They were also kicking around the idea of getting rid of the fighter component altogether and making arrangements for NATO air policing like what's seen in the Baltic. If they keep fighters, the Gripen is the only one that makes much sense from a practicality and logistics point of view. Two nations that border Slovakia, Czech Republic and Hungary, are Gripen users and Slovakia has good relations with both of them.

upnorth
Going by this, the Slovak defense minister is still mulling over the choice between the Gripen or the Viper and is set to deliver his recommendation at the end of June: https://spectator.sme.sk/c/20800805/us-presents-f-16-aircraft-in-bratislava.html From the same source, it looks ike the US is set to give Slovakia assistance in modernising their bases. Possibly that could swing things in favour of the Viper: https://spectator.sme.sk/c/20807516/us-may-contribute-to-modernising-slovak-airbases.html
hairystick
Slovakia, is buying 14 of the latest model F-16V fighters to replace their aging (and incompatible with NATO) MiG-29s. Slovakia will pay $2.91 billion for these 14 aircraft in a deal that includes spares, maintenance equipment, training, aircraft accessories (like “look and shoot” helmets) plus tech support and setting up maintenance and support facilities (which can be used for other aircraft types.) The sale includes air-to-air missiles and smart bombs as well.
huvut76g7gbbui7
Interesting point in the June issue of 'Airforcesmonthly' As well as giving more detail of what they would getting for their money it says: 'The Slovakian Ministry of Defence is also in talks with the Swedish government over the potential procurement or lease of JAS 39C/D Gripen fighters. Slovakia aims to acquire new fighter jets before 2019 when a servicing deal for the current Mig-29s is set to expire' Not a done deal yet then! My information and that published in 'Airforcesmonthly' is that no agreement has yet been made. I quote a piece of the article : 'In a bid to provide Slovakia with replacements for its Mig-29 fleet, the US has authorised the sale''' Have you heard that Slovakia have chosen the F-16? Dave Fleming
FMS approval doesn't neccessarily mean a deal has been finalised, it's just a hurdle that needs to be overcome.
Slater
Yes, Slovakia is cleared to purchase the aircraft should they choose to do so. Although I suppose Congress could always veto the sale if something unusual happened. Edited May 17, 2018 by Slater
upnorth
It's hard to say what Slovakia would do, their air force is a real mixed bag. They are a regular at the annual NATO Day show here in the Czech Republic. Last year, they brought a rather eclectic assortment of gear ranging from the stalwart Mi-17 helicopter and MiG-29 to the Sikorsky Blackhawk which they started taking deliveries of in June of last year. They also had an A319 Airbus and a Fokker 100 in the mix. Going by this year's program for the show, they'll be bringing along one of their new C-27 Spartan transports which they started receiving in October of last year.
