Sevans Davros mk2 (photos fixed)

Hi all. Got the kit off ebay. For those not familiar these kits are generally 1/8th scale, created back in the 80s by Sevans, more or less a limited edition set, being in this case and I think a few other model's case a 1000 unit run. You could also get Davros mk1, Dalek, Cyberman, Cyber Controller and Patrick Troughton from the same company, and maybe a couple more.

The kit is vacuum formed, so you are required to knife out most of the sections.

The head and right hand are made out of resin and the rest is plastic, with exception of the back of the chair which is metal, which was a nice touch.

Instead of knifing out each individual skirt panel, I decided to merely score them and bend them. I have not yet developed great skills using filler so decided this would be the best/laziest way to construct the skirt. As a result the bottom of the skirt ended up being slightly larger than standard all round but the skirt base more than compensated for it as it's nice and beefy. Having constructed a Davros mk1 I was already familiar with the option of adding the maintenance panels to the skirt which allow you to fit a hinged door to the rear panel and one of the side panels revealing the supposed electronics within Davros's chair. Given the presision knifing skills and the extra effort involved I didn't see the end result as a decent enough pay-off, so decided to leave them alone. This was the result:

As you can see, I knifed out his control panel as well. I then added a bit of primer:

Glued the bits on the control panel that would be the same colour as the panel, ie silver and primed as per the skirt.

I struggled following the instructions for constructing the main control switch board at the front of the control panel so constructed my own, coloured in with coloured permament marker and then covered with a metal grill that was supplied as a surplus piece in the kit, this hid the childish coloured-in look of my construction. Davros's 4 main sticky-up switches were green in the tv show, but I decided black looked better with the look I was going for.

I spray painted the control panel silver and then stuck on a few red buttons, I constructed these from spare bits from a Dalek kit, because the idea of knifing out minute buttons from a square of these buttons stuck together and then sticking childish looking pieces of ordinary paper, as supplied and suggested by this kit and it's instructions seemed completely implausible.

Most of it looks fine but due to the clear plastic cutout grills and the yellow backlkight construction sticking more to my fingers than the plastic, there are a few scuffs. I like the look overall though:

I'm having a go at gloss silver pen-ing the skirt balls on now, with limited success! I must say, the colour and finish of the pen (especially considering - it's a pen) is really good. I will have to either construct some kind of stencil or just be content with re-blacking the bits that I've cocked up after.

I have had a quick go at blacking in the features on his face as a practice, I haven't decided yet if I will just leave as this, or have a go at properly painting the face (and hand)

I had some light blue matt paint that I thought I'd use for his head support, but the paint must be off or something as it didn't take at all:

Overall, the look of the nearly completed sections is quite good so far I think:

That's it for now. It's taken me about a week to do this much, so will probably be another 2 before finishing.

As you can probably tell, I'm a relatively novice modeler so any feedback is welcomed, I can take any level of criticism, because it's a good way to learn (you don't get many of these kits to 'practice' on).

Looking great so far!

Really like the effect just scoring and bending the skirt panels has given instead of separating them and reattaching them.

Control panel looks nice too, very sleek lines and good choice on colours.

Like you, I'm surprised at the quality of the finish the pen has given you on the hemi's. Has the camera made them look more reflective than it does in real life?

Can't wait to see the next update.

Thanks for the feedback, very encouraging. No, the hemis really do look that good, a nice metallic reflective finish, exactly like Davros's chair. I painted the mk1 silver with humbrol silver and it was nowhere near as good. I will get the name of the pen should it be of any use. I'm away for a week on holiday so this will be waiting for me when I return.... along with a movie Dakek and a mk1 VW Golf Gti.
