The RAF had their own support vehicles at Nellis? Guessing they were air transported along with the ground crews and spares? I think I read somewhere that the Jags were tough opponents, as they were hard to spot due to their size, nimble, and pretty quick down in the weeds.

I mentioned this the first time I posted Jaguars that were at Nellis in 1981, but worth posting again.

There was this note in an issue of The Hook, the quarterly journal of the Tailhook Association. Qquote from an unidentified EA-6B Prowler EWO:

"My first Red Flag Exercise was memorable for many reasons. As an EA-6B electronic countermeasures officer (ECMO), about two weeks out of the Replacement Air Group (RAG), it was like drinking from a fire hose. Scooting across the range at 200 feet and 500 knots and having a division of Royal Air Force Jaguars go underneath was an eye opener."

Wish I could find the video of the Buccaneers flying low and the dust flying up, and the Americans trying to get a lock on and a voice pipes up in the background  ' I gotta go up and take a look at this'

A friend of mine was in the Gulf with the Jags “ during the war”. He told me how the American pilots always commented on those crazy brits, tanking down the runway, only lifting off at the last possible moment before the end of the tarmac and skimming the perimeter fence. No one wanted to burst the Americans bubble by telling them the truth, in fact the Jags were so heavy and underpowered, it was all they could do to get airborne.

Yep.........Red Flag was a massive undertaking in those days......I deployed the Jaguar Squadrons three times to Nellis between 1983-85. We completed 3 x 3 week rotations for each Squadron....the kit left the UK immediately after Christmas Day and swas finally recovered at the end of March each year - that was in the days when we had a properly resourced Air Transport Force to do the job.

I remember seeing that video years ago. Fantastic flying by the crew. Made me also wonder about the stress suffered by the airframe and as we know one aircraft's wing failed with fatal consequences during Red Flag.
