HT's Buckeye Joe (T-2c) Buckeye

Recommended Posts

I shall start this GB with the all new tool from Wolfpack of the T-2C Buckeye. The buckeye flew carrier operations during the training of its pilots so i think this passes the rules (i hope).

Hello @Hardtarget ... Im off to the local museum shortly. They have an T-2 on display. Do you think you would be interested in any photos ? If you need specific shots I’d be happy to forward them. Sadly they will be just edited cellular camera photo’s. My laptop died a while ago and i have no means of posting from my 35mm.

Hi Dennis, that would be great many thanks. Nothing specific unless you can get in the pit? Some general over all shots would be great as well as the U/C.  What A/C bu no is it?

welcome aboard with a bit of an unusual bird.

The T-2C Buckeye is fine and it's nice to see a trainer in the build, according to Wiki, every Jet Qualified Naval Aviator and Naval Flight Officer trained in these from 1950 to 2004! Plus it was the first aircraft they'd do a carrier landing in........gosh those instructors must have been brave!!

Good luck with the build, looking forward to seeing some photos and following the build.

This is a relatively new kit which i haven't seen too many been built this side of the pond. Being a NAVY buff, i love US Naval A/C so when an opportunity to do this bird came up a snatched at it.

Right best show the boxing and the progress Ive made in the last week being Easter and all progress has been made in abundance.

Box/Schemes included.

Progress

Bang seats appear quite nice, they look quite wide but it could be the makeup of the seat. We shall see. Airbrushed hu140.

Bang seats and intermediate IP coaming along with the decal panels.

The decals look really good with good colour and register, no need for AM IP.

Tub cemented to the stbd fuselage halves. In addition, the exhaust cans cemented to their back plate. NOTE WEIGHT!. it mentions approx 20g but there is no way you can fit 20g into the nose.  This amount is approx 8g and appeared to be enough.  You have options to cement the fuselage halves together and able to add weight later on by not installing the under fuselage panel.

Halves cemented which seemed to fit well. No need for filler.

41328347162_a84c8f2981_h.jpgDSC_0279 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

Intakes added with a little gap around which was soon neutralized but dropping tamiya cement around.  Note here the underside fuselage panel not affixed.

Wings. Generally good fit needed a clamp over the wheel wells as there is a little return which had a gap.

Then Fast forward a bit.  Primed and painted hu22 gloss. No filler has been used, only tamiys cement and extra thin. A little sanding as expected but to this stage no real issues.  NOTE i did not need any further weight. To test, affix the U/C with wheels fitted and see if it balances. If good cement the panel. It actually will push into place without cement if you have any doubt.

Sorry for the lack of update, progress has been slow with all the other GBs on the go, so much variation and wants to do in them.

Anyway some progress.

Test fitting the cockpit showed that by lining it up at the rear of the coaming that the front end just woulnt line up with the front windscreen, so a little fettilng is required and its needed to be held in place to get it to fix.

A nice light blue stripe along the fuselage was hand painted which may give a clue to what bird im making. Cockp;it got a coating of internal cockpit colour.

Masking up of the second colour.  I had to mask and airbrush these as the decals seemed to just break up in warm water. Very fragile indeed from S&M. Tip tanks painted ins Xtracolour  FS15042 Gloss Sea Blue.

Red Duly applied. This is the closest match from all my reds which is Xtracolour RLM23 X217. Its a perfect brightness but deep red.

Masking of the very very thin white line between the two colours.

Right update time and to completion.

Touch up and decals being applied. Have i mentioned these are crap decals with no flexibility whatsoever even with Daco Strong.

very nicely done and what a nice colour scheme as well.

Thanks for joining us with something a little bit different on the airing side of this GB.

It was great to have you along and I hope you enjoyed the build.
