Sorry I know I could google this but it might be more accurate to ask you - any tips on roughly what shade of grey those planes (Wildcats and Avengers) would be? I imagine like a kind of dark sea grey shade?

Are you painting them in the Atlantic colours of Grey + White?

Yes I guess so. I did the ship (will do the ship) with the paint scheme described on the website you suggested. That is, blue below, grey above, and a blue flight deck.

Some Atlantic based aircraft had a two tone camouflage and some had a three tone camouflage. The colours where White, Light Gull Grey and Dark Gull Grey in the three colour scheme and the two tone scheme was just White and Dark Gull Grey. Have a look at the Wings Pallete which you can see some colour profiles of Wildcats and Avengers to give you an idea.

Yeah each one has five parts - the plane, two main wheels, tail wheel and prop. It comes with quite a few in the box and I would be amazed if anyone can build them all. Last night the wheels were flying left and right out of the tweezers!

Made some good progress today. Sprayed it with Haze Grey at lunchtime and then did all this in about an hour tonight:

Made some further progress last night.

 

The flight deck was made of wood, so far as I can tell, and then stained with a blue colour. So I painted it first with this deck tan from Vallejo, and then I will cover that with blue. Maybe I will then sand back a bit here and there to try to reflect a few images I've seen where the stain is a bit worn out. We'll see. 

 

The planes won't be that colour. I'll do the North Atlantic scheme of white with a bit of grey on top. But I already painted these before I realised that. 

 

I also added the mast and radar, plus the lower level of single AA guns. Each is two tiny pieces...only another 20 to go!

 

Questions for anyone who might know:

 

1. what colour should that big radar array be? Modern ships mostly have them black, I think; the instructions suggest silver, which must be wrong. I am thinking maybe gun metal dark metal kind of colour.

 

2. roughly from how far back would the planes commence their take-off run? I am assuming this didn't have a catapult on it?

Of course the photos show up all the blemishes, gaps, parts where the paint missed: I will tidy all that up before the end.

 

So I think I am pretty confident I can get this one done by the end of the GB, maybe not with its full complement of planes. Unfortunately I now have a week of business travel so I won't get anything done for a while.

Looking great so far and I would go with the gunmetal on the radar with a black wash to highlight the frame work

I would paint the radar the same as the camouflage colour unless you know different (or anyone can tell you different). You can see a catapult track of the port side of the forward flight deck. The big radar is an SK-1 air search radar, very common on larger US warships.

As  guess they would have started their take off run from about halfway on the deck at least, into the wind and the carrier going full tilt!

 

I found this on another site, it's for RN aircraft but you get the gist.

 

As already indicated, take-off roll depended on quite a few variables: Headwind and carrier speed, air temperature, aircraft weight/load out and flap setting are the main ones I can think of.
For example: According to the USN, an F6F-5 at 12,750 lb will need roughly 300 ft to take off into a 25 knot (29 mph/45 kph) headwind. With no headwind, it will need about 650 ft. On land, it will need about 800 ft.
For lighter aircraft, the difference is even greater. An F4F-4 will need about 250 ft with a 25 knot headwind, but 680 ft with no headwind. With full flaps, the same aircraft will only need about 215 ft into the headwind, and about 630 ft wihout. 

The Fleet Air Arm's F6F's data sheets show how much weight and headwind can affect take-off distance. 

F6F-5 at 11,800 lbs:
40 knot headwind: 180 ft
30 knot: 300 ft
20 knot: 435 ft

F6F-5 at 13,200 lbs:
40 knot headwind: 295 ft 
30 knot: 450 ft
20 knot: 630 ft

Just from some quick research, the shortest take-off roll I've seen for a fighter is for the Seafire Mk II, with 140 ft into a 40 knot headwind, or 225 ft at 30 knots or 330 ft at 20 knots.
I've seen the F8F quoted as 150 ft take-off roll, but without any indication of wind/loading conditions.

30-kt wind = 270 feet

20-kt wind = 410 feet
30-kt wind = 275 feet
40-kt wind = 170 feet

Seafire IIc (merlin 45)
20-kt wind = 410 feet
30-kt wind = 280 feet
40-kt wind = 170 feet

Seafire IIc (merlin 32)
20-kt wind = 330 feet
30-kt wind = 225 feet
40-kt wind = 140 feet

Seafire III (merlin 55)
20-kt wind = 375 feet
30-kt wind = 260 feet
40-kt wind = 160 feet

Seafire III (merlin 55m)
20-kt wind = 330 feet
30-kt wind = 230 feet
40-kt wind = 140 feet

Firefly I
20-kt wind = 490 feet
30-kt wind = 330 feet
40-kt wind = 195 feet

Firefly III

Meanwhile, tonight, I got back to the bench. Wife & child have gone on vacation, so I'm batching it for three weeks until I join them. 

 

The ship is now finished, bar the flight deck stain (you can see the first failed experiment on that up front). I'll fix that up later.

 

Next job is to do some planes (the blue Avengers won't be blue but they'll be in the proper scheme). 

 

 

Doing all the single mount guns was pretty time consuming. Amazingly, I only lost one of them.

she looks great, gosh that deck was small! I know the Avengers are big but....that would have been horrifying trying to land one on a deck that size! Slow landing speed of not.

First go of flight deck blue stain is on now. A bit of touch up and this ship is finished. Just needs some planes!

Well in the end I couldn't get as many planes finished as I hoped, but there are enough to give it a reasonably full looking deck anyway. I'm calling this one finished for now too.

It still amazes me how small that ship was (or those ships were), that Avenger looks huge on her. Landing on her in bad weather must have been truly frightening.

Gidday Bianfuxia, I'm a newbie to BM, this was before I became active in it. Plus I've only just found the GBs. I like your model very much. 1/700 is a bit small for me, I work in 1/600 (Airfix mainly) but I wish to do some carriers in the future, and if you don't mind may I call on your build for ideas and inspiration. What also appeals to me is your choice of model. I believe the small carriers played a vital role in the war, and the recognition modelers like you give them is commendable. Regards, Jeff.

haha thanks mate @ArnoldAmbrose. Amazingly it survived being moved recently - from one suburb to another sitting in an open box in the passenger seat of my car. The little planes didn't even fall off the deck!
