CVE-9 USS Bogue 1/700 (Finished)

Well, I don't know why, I guess it's major lack of discipline, or maybe the feeling that the Carriers GB doesn't quite have enough carriers in it. But yesterday I bought the 1/700 CVE-9 USS Bogue kit by Tamiya. It's only $15 here, I guess that's a bit cheaper than what it costs elsewhere. I will give it a crack and see if I can do it in this GB. Later I'll post a few images of the kit.

I actually had an insane plan to buy the 1/700 Nimitz 1970s fit kit but the guy didn't have it in that shop, only in his warehouse for online sales (which I can't use because a certain someone in the house will see the package arrive...). Probably lucky because that is a monster kit.

Anyway I now have two carriers in this GB. Let's see how I go...

I feel you pain. I figure smuggling white powder from the Russian Embassy thru the Salisbury post office is easier than getting stuff past my wife

welcome aboard and it's great to see another carrier in the GB.

The Nimitz would have been great to see built, but I know your pain as well! 20 questions about the package that arrived in the mail can be very painful!!! :fight:

Good luck with the build, hope you have fun , and do look forward to seeing her in the gallery.

I'm interest to see how this goes.  I had considered buying one and converting it to a Royal Navy Escort Carrier but have heard that's not so easy...  Good luck with the build...

Bogue was previously released as HMS Tracker.  I don't think that alterations were all that significant.  I didn't hear of any before I made the kit.  It may well be that there were more significant differences in later British CVEs, which were the same basic US design but came in different classes.

Sorry for the poor quality phone shots.

This is as far as I've got on my two builds  - two carriers, what was I thinking? - for this GB. This is a nice little kit.

As far as my brief research tells me though, these CVEs flew Wildcats and that's the only plane not present amongst the little air wing of Avengers, Hellcats, Helldivers and Corsairs.

Otherwise it's pretty cool. I have seen a few pics of corsairs flying off CVEs so I am going to go with those and the Avengers. I have a few spare corsairs from another kit to fill up the numbers.

I finally got started tonight. What you see here was 90 minutes of work. It all goes together very nicely.

The main hull is one single part.

IMG_20180510_222051_resized_20180510_112

The upper hull is four parts for the walls and three for the front and rear decks.

Then I built the island bridge and added on some of the gun bays.

This colour is probably a bit dark for these planes (it'll dry to matt) but I think it's going to do. Not sure it's worth a trip to the shop and a whole jar of the correct blue for just a few 1/700 planes!

The kit comes with four each of Corsair, Avenger, Helldiver and Hellcat. My brief research suggests that only Avengers and Wildcats would be correct, but as I have two other Corsairs from another kit I am going to go with Avengers and Corsairs just to have a decent number of planes on deck.

Next step is to spray paint everything grey, then attach the flight deck and some further gun decks. After that, I have to build 28 tiny AA guns!

So far so good though.

The Bogue would have operated Wildcats and Avengers not Corsairs. Bogue was in the Atlantic for all but the last month of the war so the aircraft would have been painted Grey and White, not Blue. You could do her as a different Bogue class ship but that might require a different camouflage scheme. Some were used as aircraft transports (but not Bogue herself) which would mean you could put a deckload of USAAF aircraft on her if you wanted, mixed types too. The instructions are telling you porky pies about the aircraft colours.

As for the ship colours (again the instructions aren't the most correct), it's in MS22, which means the lower part of the hull is 5N Navy Blue (quite dark), the rest of the Vertical surfaces should be 5H Haze Grey, all decks apart from the flight deck, should be in 5B Deck Blue (which is different from the Navy Blue) and the flight deck was stained yet another type of Blue, which varied. If you're doing her in the scheme suggested in the instructions, I would go with the Darker stain, which you could cheat slightly and paint it the same Blue as you use for the other decks. Here's a handy link to the USN ship camouflage website, which gives you the different camouflage schemes and which ships were painted in what scheme in what year. http://www.shipcamouflage.com/warship_camouflage.htm

You can get USN colours in enamel and acrylics too.

thanks

Mike

Most of the Bogue's that went to the RN only had 4 twin Bofors, meaning research and modification is required. I think HMS Searcher has the full fit of 8 twin Bofors but pics of her also show what look like power twin Oerlikons which the US ships ships did not have. I find things never turn out as straight forward as you hope for!

thanks

Thanks a lot, that's detailed info. I don't need to make it as Bogue, I just listed that for the thread because it's the name of the kit. Not being a big ship modeler nor too focused on precise accuracy I think I will go for a representative model based on whatever I see on that site you recommended (once I can get it to load).

I thought I read somewhere that after 1944 all US planes were overall blue but again I have not put much time into this!

Certainly at some point in 1944 they painted them overall Glossy Sea Blue in the Pacific but I think the Atlantic scheme of Grey and White lasted into 1945. So it will depend on whether you go for a Pacific based ship or an Atlantic based ship.

it's great to see you've made a start on her.

It wouldn't be the first time (and definitely not the last) where the instructions are either vague on the correct colours schemes or get them completely wrong. Hopefully you can get this sorted out, it shouldn't be too hard.

Just for the record the instructions actually aren't wrong.

For the ship itself, it says the lower hull should be XF-18 medium blue and the upper parts XF-66 light grey.

Just as Mike says, the USN ship cammo website says Bogue in 1944 wore MS-22 which it describes as:

Navy Blue 5-N

To be applied to the hull to the height of the main deck edge at its lowest point.  The upper edge of this Navy Blue are should be horizontal.

Haze Gray, 5-H

All remaining vertical surfaces and all masts and small gear.

As for the planes, the instructions say XF-17 Sea blue on top and XF-2 white on the bottom. I don't know what XF17 actually looks like but at least it's semi close to what was described by Mikemx.

I only painted mine overall blue because of what I'd read elsewhere.

So I will re-do the planes and run with that. As cool as the dazzle scheme MS32 looks I don't think I have what it takes - skill, time or patience - to do that!

thanks Mike  & everyone for the ideas.

No problem! Don't forget the decks were painted Blue and the flight Deck stained Blue as well. If you decide to do more USN ships from WW2, you'll find the ship camouflage website to be very handy. You can get USN ship colours in acrylics by Lifecolor and AK Interactive or in Enamels from Sovereign Hobbies, if you ever decide to get the proper colours. Otherwise you can just use what you think is the closest available to you.

thanks

I've got some Wildcats on order, the little Trumpeter set. I can only get Vallejo and Tamiya paints here so I will just have to go with the nearest in those. There's also Mr Color but with a three year old in the house I have been instructed against using enamels!

can you get Mr Hobby acrylics there? They're produced by Gunze and are almost as nice to use as the Tamiya acrylic, plus they have a larger range. That said I think Tamiya acrylics are about the best there is out there, pity their range is so small.

I don't think I've seen them around.

It's ok, I quite like Vallejo acrylics and feel they brush really well. They have a big range and I'm honestly more of a "shelf distance" guy. As long as it's roughly the right shade of grey I'm happy!
