bigbadbadge
Hi all As well as the Oxford I have been working on a couple of other aircraft a 72nd scale Novo Percival proctor and this, the academy Lockheed Ventura II. Although I have decided to model a RCAF Western Air Command machine during Operation polar Bear in 1944/45. They were standard Venturas in the US Navy scheme and some were repainted in a scheme known as the Saddleback scheme with some yellow panels on the tail plane vertical surfaces and the tops of the outer main wings. The scheme looks particularly attractive I think. The model I am making s of a GR.V serial 2189 with code letter Q of 8 Sqn Feb to March 1945. This aircraft is called "Pats Pile". The kit is quite basic and although I am not correcting the cockpit on this I did make alterations to the pilots seat as shown in the first image. The fuselage went together quite well with minimal filler, however when it came to the canopy it was around a millimetre to shallow this was rectified by sanding off the lower frame work and adding some square rod to the fuselage sides in the cockpit opening and on the bottom of the windscreen which matched very well. The nose went on well and the small side windows were filled as this is a later type. The front plexiglass has also been painted over, as on the real machines, this was covered in fabric strips applied with a solvent adhesive and then clear doped over which is a light fibreglass colour. This was due to the cold temperatures and the action of the Guns firing just above the plexiglass could shatter. The wings went together well and the vents in the lower engine nacelles were boxed in and engines inserted. Wing to fuselage joint required filler all round. This is where I am at the mo with the white undersides painted on almost, just need one more coat to go. The upper surfaces will be Extra Dark Sea Grey and Dark Slate Grey. I am using Aviaeology decals Venturas in Canada part 3 sheet AOD72034. Hope you enjoy Thank you for looking Chris Edited June 20, 2018 by bigbadbadge Cut out duplicate picture
Corsairfoxfouruncle
The colorscheme sounds interesting ? I couldn't find any photos or profiles showing it ? Do you have a photo/profile you can post that would show it ? Im asking as i look for non standard schemes myself, i ask for the possibility a future build of this scheme ? bigbadbadge
Hi Dennis Thanks for responding. I found an image on Google. If you search for 1/48 Lockheed Ventura ando keep scrolling down on images you will come across one on the I modeller site once you get down the page there are quite a few images of the model. Alternatively look on Hannants site and this shows you the images although the decal leaflet/instructions are in black and white. Hope this helps Chris

bigbadbadge
Hi all Some more progress, the white paint is finally finished and the first camouflage coat has been started. This is the dark slate grey, it looks kind of horrible at the moment however a few coats will be needed as I am using thinned Humbrol enamels and am brush painting. Will start looking better with the next coat fingers crossed. Thanks for looking All the best Chris
bigbadbadge
Hi all A further 2 coats of thinned Dark slate grey and a lighter one in the centre of the panels and she is looking a bit more attractive than she did before. Beard
I've got a couple of these in the stash so it's interesting to see how they go together.
bigbadbadge
Hi all A bit more progress with the final coat of the EDSG and a faded one too. She is now sealed and can be handled a bit easier. Next up are the yellow panels and then the De icing boots then decals. She is looking a bit more attractive now. I have tried to copy the camouflage pattern for this machine as best a possible but the painting instructions are a bit dark and the demarcation on some images is not that clear. This particular aircraft had two dark slate panels on the outside of the port ending cowling which makes it a bit more interesting too. I have just started a Tamiya 1/72 Mosquito which I am building as the PRIV to test painting/weathering for a PRU Blue Hudson which I am planning to build n 1/48 scale which I think will look quite nice. I seem to have a thing for twins at the moment !!! Thanks for looking All the best Chris
bigbadbadge
Hi all Further progress, painted the yellow panels with a couple of coats of thinned Humbrol Trainer yellow. Looks quite striking now. a further coat and a paler wreathing coat to go. Thanks for looking All the best Chris

bigbadbadge
Hi all I thought I would post my progress so far . Been busy doing three models mainly and working on the house, this weekend I have mostly been doing Balustrades up the stairs, very satisfied with that and it's earnt me loads of Brownie points which I am saving for a rainy day. First images show painting complete with de icing boots on and then some decals on wahoo finally !!! Thanks for looking All the best Chris
Beard
That's very striking and rather splendid. It's good to see other brush painters getting airbrush-like results.
bigbadbadge
Thanks fella. It is a lovely scheme, thank you for your kind comments, it takes a few coats of thinned paint to get the desired effect and the camouflage edges took a bit of practice but it is very satisfying when finished. stevehnz
That is looking great Chris, a really striking scheme. Just don't let those brownie points hang around for too long, if they're at all like the local variety, they'll have a half life of about 3 nanoseconds & disappear in front of your eyes. cngaero
That really is a very eye-catching colour scheme Chris and you've applied beautifully.

bigbadbadge
Hi all Just thought I would show you the latest progress. Still a way to go with the remaining bits to be added and the weathering to do on this one although I have been distracted with this little beauty and this lovely pair I have been wanting to start these for ages so I cashed in some Brownie points the other day and spent a day at the bench. The Herald is the Maquette boxing and is almost sanded smooth and the Superfreighter is ready to progress to the next stage. Might have to start a new WIP. Graeme H
Now that is a very different scheme, the yellow really lifts it from the very drab Slate Grey and EDSG colour scheme
