I'm guessing sihrsc action there Adrian

It's actually a flat 8" tapered and the Frog plastic is rock solid - I tried a coarser one but it left too many scratches!

Adrian

Hello All,

Time to to make some canopy moulds:

When the glue has dried I will sand them a little smoother, go round all the edges with a black sharpie and smother them in filler.

In the end I sanded the fuselage sides down some more instead of trying to fill my mistake on the port side. I've now got pretty close to the distinctive cross section at the back:

Thanks for looking,

Adrian

Coming along nicely.

Thanks! I didn't expect this to be a quick build, and it is certainly meeting my expectations. Once the canopies are done (oh, and the nacelles...) it will be a comparative walk in the park, I hope.

What the...!

The canopy in particular has a lot of features that I want to get right and I don't trust myself to get the shape right straight from a lump of balsa.

The plastic card shapes act as formers for the final shape. They get covered in balsa for simple shapes or Milliput for complicated ones. I coloured the card edges black so I will be able to see them when I am sanding back down to the right shape. When the edge changes from black to white, stop sanding!!

For the front canopy I used two pieces of balsa either side of the front profile piece. This was then sanded down to a smooth curved shape, looking at it from lots of different angles to check it is symmetrical and smooth:

It will get a couple of coats of superglue to seal it and another fine sanding to smooth it down.

For the cockpit and turret I built the shapes up with Milliput and I'm now waiting for it to set before digging out the sandpaper again.

Well, in my eagerness to show everyone how it works (impatient, moi?) I decided to get stuck in with the file and sandpaper at the cheddar Cheese stage:

I'm pretty happy with that (turret still to go) but we will see how the vac forms turn out...

May I ask what glue do you use to attach the balsa to the plasticard?

Regular superglue. Same stuff I rub all over the balsa to seal it. Then my wife tells me off for picking bits off my finger the rest of the evening.

When I remember, I wrap a scrap of polythene around my fingertip first. But not today!

Finally caught up Adrian after turning up really late as usual! Some fantastic modelling going on, and it was a genious idea in the first place to combine the two kits! I've got a Special Hobby kit in the stash & I'll bet it won't turn out as good as your kitbash!

Looking forward to seeing the canopies, the moulds look great!

Thanks Steve and Keith.

I'm expecting to do a lot of wrestling with the cockpit and turret to get a decent fit. I tried to do a simple plunge mould of the front canopy this evening but I ended up with some crumpled plastic and burnt fingers!

Been there, done that! I'm sure you'll get some good 'uns soon though!

Thanks for sharing the steps Adrian - a great technique, although I'm not sure I could 'just sand the shape' and get suck good results. Looking forward to the plunging :)

It's vac form time. Highly specialised and expensive equipment:

IMG_8093.jpg

Dektec is an equipment supplier that sent a CD-sized box of chocolates to the office at Christmas. I didn't get a chocolate but I did get the wrapper!

An early success, after remembering to get the plastic hot enough:

The successes:

The failures:

I tried putting a dam around the turret to stop it webbing. It seemed to work well enough - if there's just one web I can lose it by cutting the gun slot there:

While I was vac forming the nacelles were drying in their new location on the wing after being cut down to fit this morning:

The canopies look like they can be made to fit (turret is just roughly in position at the moment!):

And I've finished extending the torpedo tunnel and I've boxed it in:

Thanks for looking,
