Spitfire Mk.VIII

Recommended Posts

Ooooh, it looks very very nice, especially the spinner and topside!

I'd probably (well, I did) add some more grubbiness to the underside though.

Merlin engines leaks a lot of oil I've learned, and Morotai wasn't exactly filled with asphalt and concrete runways...

When I sat at the bench this morning I found that I’d managed to stuff up one of the decals

so I broke out theTamiya XF-23 light blue and had a go at touching it up

the light blue colour is not an exact match but as my old Nan would have said “a blind man would be pleased to see it”,

no I’ve no idea either

While I had the paint brush out I decided that I’d add some more scratches using Mr Metal Color stainless

I wanted to add a bit more colour variation so I opted for a dot filter

these were then blended in by a paintbrush lightly soaked in odourless turpentine

…after letting the oils cure for a couple of hours this is the result

Once the dot filter had dried I added some streaking to the underside

Next I added the remaining bits and pieces

radiator flaps

undercarriage and pitot tube

cockpit door

…and finally removed masks from the cockpit glass and added the propellor

I’m calling her finished, she’ll be ready for inspection shortly.

until next time

as always, any suggestions or comments will be gratefully received.

Looking great. Nice work on the spinner & interesting to see the use of oils for the dot filter. I think the crowbar on the cockpit door should be steel, black or interior green. Red is only used on modern restorations - Health & Safety probably!

Wow!

Your doing great!

As Pete says, red crowbars are a post-war regulation. Perhaps you could also add some dirt to the tires? they look far too clean compared to the rest of the airframe.

Thanks guys, I didn't know about the red crowbar, I've now painted it steel, I wanted to keep it 'distinct'

I've also added more dirt to the tyres as I agree they did look too clean compared to the rest of the airframe

Now I just need it to stop raining and I can take some photos for the RFI
