The airfix Buccaneer S2b

Recommended Posts

Finally completed, and what an effort!

I started this on 1-1-17 intending it to be the build for the year. It was put onto the shelf of doom after 4 months, where it resided having killed any form of mojo. Resurrected in December and the final "push" for completion.

Added parts were:

Filler.

Pavla resin cockpit and seats.

Resin intakes and inlet blades (Kits for Cash, thanks!) and made larger intake "bullets".

Airwaves wing-fold and airbrakes etch sets.

Modelmaster pitot and refuelling probes.

More filler.

Sanding sticks, and finally,

Filler.

A kit that fights every step of the way. Fuselage mouldings not lining up, wing mouldings not lining up, decals that seem to have had a one-night-stand with a jellyfish and been "slimed" somehow, etc, etc.

I've modified the tail-hook and recess, added a few wires into the main gear wells (really, they are in there), and moved the drop tanks inboard somewhat. airfix seems to want you to have the tank centreline almost underneath the wing hinge line... Remembered to scribe in the canopy track running down the spine behind the cockpit. I also painted the walk lines on the upper surface as it was far easier than using the decals.

Some areas are brushed, bigger areas are sprayed. Yes, the intakes are white (only got that message well after the fact)

Looks excellent. Beautiful aircraft, beautiful model.

Even though you said it was pain to build, I'd still like one (but still going for silly prices here).

Thanks for the compliments.

I'd strongly recommend staying away from this kit and waiting for the Tanmodel release, which is the next kit they will put out and shouldn't be too far away now. Much better detail all over and bomb bay able to be displayed too!

The trouble is that I've heard that the Tanmodel (if it ever appears) is likely to be in the region of £70, which way more than I can afford. So it's either Airfix or no Buck. :(

I'm with you on this Gorby. I've been bidding for almost every Bucc under £30 I see on eBay and within days have to give up because they're reaching stupid prices. There'll be a black market for these soon the way their price is. Same with 1/48 UK Phantoms. Loads of F-4Cs, etc for under £30, but as soon as it's Spey engined they're over £50. 🙁😡

That's a good looking Brick! Only thing that is missing is a good coating of hydraulic fluid :D:D

Im looking forward to seeing what Tanmodel can do as these old kits are hard work!

I'm looking forward to the Tanmodel Buck being released, the prices for the Airfix one will probably plummet :fingerscrossed:. I'd hold off till then if I was you.

Fabulous brick.

Mine’s been in the pending file for years, got it Bucc shaped but despaired of more filling & scribing. It really is a dog of a kit but once I’ve finished the challenge that is the Airfix 1/72 Concorde I might have another go.

Fantastic work what a lovely Bucc. I have built one as a Navy machine and was anxious over buttoning up the fuselage however it went together okay. Guess I was lucky.

Great work on your build.  Glad you rescued it from the shelf of doom.

All the best
