I came into this thread via googling for '747SP SOFIA  kit' and managed to miss the whole point of the thread. - sorry.

I've done the same and found myself in dodgy places too. :D

Well I have one of Rikki Wolfes P.1214-3 filament printed X Wings. I think I'll build it here. It's designed as a Travel Agent type model but I'd like to make it as comparable to a standard static model. To quote from another forum

Elements of the swiveling nozzle design from the P.1214/6 ended up in the F35B. Some aspects of the cockpit and forward fuse made it into the Typhoon. The rest was discarded in a rare outbreak of sanity in the MoD when they decided to buy American with the McDD Harrier II.

Which seems a little harsh. Pity that the Harrier 'bicyle with stabilisers' undercarriage wasn't continued but we all have our burdens. With your permission I'd like to do a bit of preparation work that is slathering MEK over it to ensure it holds together, also cutting away the internal structure to make room for the cockpit and such. Both messy and best not done in the flat....

I'm glad you included the pictures because I was getting very confused about how Lucas Films had been involved with the MoD- obviously it wasn't developed because they'd got the 'x' in the wrong plane!

Some pre build MEK slavering can't be such a bad thing. I would say knock yourself out, but in the case of MEK and solvents I really shouldn't!! Seriously, welcome and happy preparatory work

I'll be taking that part of the job to SleeperDad's place specifically his workshop featuring extractor fans. They're intended for welding but I'm sure it'll be fine. He's also got many strange tools that will make much mess and short work of the internal filaments. I don't even need to sweep the mess up as it'll add colour to what's already there. :D

He's in Haverhill BTW originally from Clare the town where every house has an extra zero or two on the price. Thanks to my Sister legging it to Singapore with her partner I'm the nearest at 150 miles to escort him to hospital and such. This will give me something useful to do while I'm there ;)

We'll all be round Sleeper Dad's for the workshop facilities!

I was thinking about MEK and remembered a photo in a model railway magazine of Mr Slater, of Slater's plastikard giving a demonstration of it at a show. He's sitting there as happy as be with lit cigarette hanging out of his mouth and a huge crowd gathered round. Amazed they weren't blown up and/or high as kites. Back in the day, eh!

When I was a young fitter being passed round as a spare pair of gullible hands I remember the spray shop. Cellulose thinners, trike, degreaser, acetone, and more. The two sprayers always had cigarettes on the go. If somebody came in with a cold they'd stick their head over the trike tank and have a couple of deep breaths, no more cold. Between examples like that and Mr. Slater catching non-paintshop people it's amazing we survived at all. The good old days indeed. Young'uns today won't believe us. For many fabrication plants are a myth.

I read @SleeperService’s post too quickly and was wondering why a travel agent would need a model of an X-wing. What kind of tickets are they selling?

I finished the draft design of my SOFIA bits the other day and did a test print. Some of them will need some adjusting and some of them need to be reoriented to put the supports in different places, but I’m pretty happy with them. Getting excited and impatient to actually use them!

Also had another resin kit arrive in the post this morning - the Combat Kits 1/72 BAe 146-100. Looks like a fantastic kit. Can see myself derailing all my other build plans by trying to get this and SOFIA both done in the GB!

@Enzo Matrix will be so proud of you 🙃

Isn't it amazing that in 2021 we have a group build where some are CADing their own parts and kits, have a machine replicate them, and then build the resulting kit. I almost feel like I could be living on the Moon in a silver suit eating pills for meals. Awesome.

I love the Bae 146, it's a good job I didn't know this kit existed!

The diversity is going to be mind-blowing, yes 3D kits going on alongside old white metal and card. It'll be like a parallel universe, which brings us back to X-wing fighters!

Now, about living on the moon eating pills for lunch, are you sure your taking enough precautions with the MEK?!!

Or in the spirit of the irrational exuberance (that's a phrase we've not heard for a long time) that's prevalent in this GB, surely you'll be building both?!!

Don't tempt me - I've already been looking online for plastic eggs as a basis for bulding....

You know you want to...  :wicked:

A plastic egg? As long as it's a vac-form one. But why not a wooden one, or even go for complete authenticity. If only my grandmother had taught me how to suck eggs!

Hasegawa egg planes? Pah! Nothing!!

okey dokey this wee baby showed up the other day! 🤗

Not a lot to the model so it should be a quick build, though I have to admit it's made form the one media I've never played with before, vinyl! I will have to do some research on to build with that medium. Especially as the main body is a wee bit out of shape.....though not too bad for a model well over 30yo!

Pull the other one. Quick build!!!

And regarding vinyl, it’s the same medium as your horrendous budgie smugglers  :fraidnot:

Thanks for that image of Trickrich in budgie smugglers, I'll be skipping breakfast now!

I can see it being really hard (whoops bad choice of word) to work with, how to glue it, how to get paint to adhere etc.

Still looks like it can be radio control for light relief

actually have been doing some research on the stuff, basically you treat it just like a resin model, same gluing methods, filling methods and painting...... so not worried at all.

Have downloaded all the guides I need..... and yes there is an option to add a remote control feather but it just turns it into a toy!

I think I will join the group. I have some 25 vacu kits in stash plus 10 of resin and few idea to go with scratch builds  - something I will found to go on...

Just the one? I don't know how @Enzo Matrix will hide his disappointment! Also surprised that @trickyrich isn't here already at the mention of resin. But welcome and we look forward to seeing the chosen one

Maybe more indeed.... :) I have plan (~"a New Year promise") for this year to do about 1/3 of models as non-injected (vacu, resin, scratch...) - we will see how I will be able to fulfill it!
