A classic, but not completely ! Fokker Dr I

Recommended Posts

Hello Dears,

This is not a brand new project since I started it years ago !! Around 2006...

But as I am cleaning up my little personnal MASDC, I restart some buildings !

If I say Fokker DR I, everybody think about the red baron....

Almost right gentlemen !

39852302224_32503ce3ba_b.jpg

I read this very good book... And some others

39852302254_6fac71b014_b.jpg

Pretty well writed, It is a police investigation but there is a solid backgroung and lots of anecdotes !

I have in mind to represent the 2 brothers at one of their very last meeting in March 1918

I got this in the box

39852302284_c21da70787_b.jpg

I put the Albatros aside and bought this

39852302274_5079bb395c_b.jpg

Aaaaaand some goodies

More to follow in a few minutes

Well, There was some goodies offered by Eduard...

39852359354_9c56abb1b2_b.jpg

So, here's the painting I will follow on

Manfred's one

39852302324_9c0e2121be_b.jpg

And Lothar's one

39852359304_4123338af4_b.jpg

In fact, the red baron has flown a fully red painted Aircraft for a mere 2 months...

Legend is legend !!

So this one will not go faster, but that's one of my tiny pleasure...

I spend a lot of work on a kit, then I look aside and restart another thing.

Luckily for Mrs CC, it's my way of life for kits only....:huh:

Ok, she do not believe me about that, she's just wasting her time...

39852359434_b5fce0371f_b.jpg

Ok Dears, see you later

Take care and have a very good modelling time.

Sincerely.

Hello Dears,

Show some parts now

Here are the fuselages, must also let dry before the oïl painting

40539126572_5ef909c9b3_b.jpg

Now the floor,

40539126622_07182ee6e8_b.jpg

And then oïl painting for a wood look alike.

I also bored the air intake in the cowling for having a thinner effect

40539126582_a7737fe7d7_b.jpg

I will also have a thinning at the rear of the parts, but I will see where it is glued before !

Have a greta modelling time.

Sincerely.

Hello Dears,

Here are some news,

I tried to airbrush the fabric and on the other hand I brushed it

WP_20180728_23_43_12_Pro

clearly, The hairy stick give a better rendering of the typically Fokker brush strokes !

The last red coat will be lightly airbrushed

WP_20180728_23_42_23_Pro

It has been a radial engine modelling evening !

More to come soon !

I hope that you are enjoying your Week end !

Sincerely.

Hello Dears,

Still about the engines !

A mere 30 years in between these 2 beasts...

Each in their era were considered as reliable and powerfull !

They were widely used in aviation… But

WP_20190105_22_33_39_Pro

Le Rhône / Oberursel…. 110Hp in 1915

Pratt & Whitney P-2800.... 2200 Hp in 1943 !!

God ! the 20th century has been fast… Real fast !!

Have a perfect modelling Sunday !! Sincerely.

Hello Dears,

Yesterday I was in a WW I mood...

Still I worked on on of the engines.

I think that I will create some spark plugs and valve rockers

At least, I will check the clearance of the cowling...

Or may be on the lower cylinders.. Will see ...

WP_20190227_23_16_04_Pro

And now that it's glued in place...

I will add some stringers !

WP_20190227_22_50_39_Pro

I started it but luckily, I stopped because, the thin copper wire is enough to jam the very tight gluing surfaces !!

In building these, It is clearer for me that 1/72 is no longer for my fingers and my eyes….

Still these are 1/48 but so tiny….

Sincerely.

Well !! wake up little thread !!

Sometimes I did some bits and bobs on already started kits...

Nothing worth of a pic... But, I'll show some progresses...

IMG_20200123_233543

Glad enough about my leather cushionned seats

IMG_20200123_233606

I should have cleaned up the plastic dust BEFORE takin' the pic...

Internals come slightly to life !

But God !! these tiny parts... And I salute the courageous ones who did this at the 1/72 scale...

IMG_20200123_233635

I'm also glad of the map case rendition, it really look like leather !!

Now the engines...

IMG_20200123_233712

Some correction in paints and then, I put it aside...

Thanks for watching Gents !!

Have a great modelling Week End !!

Sincerely.

There was a bubble on @TheBaron  's vest...

Care given !!

IMG_20200207_220507

Then, here we are with the internals of  Reddie !!

IMG_20200207_225602

Look how fast aviation has evolved in a mere 26 years...

IMG_20200207_230034

Same scale, same job.... 26 years... Okaaayyyyy !!!

See you later Gents, I must go on SWMBO is waiting...

Sincerely.

Just a rivet counting comment on most Tripes Oberursel radials. With the exception of F1 103/17 (Voss pre production a/c) most Tripes didn't have copper/brass feed pipes leading to the cylinder heads. Voss' aircarft uniquely (I stand to be corrected) had a caprured Le Rhone radial which did have copper pipes in this area. Fokker's Oberursel was effectively a copy of the Le Rhone radial in most other areas and profit-conscious Anthiny Fokker missed very few tricks when it came to maximisung the bottom line. Easily corrected if you feel strongly about it. Paul

Hello Paul,

Thanks for the type, So I suppose that I better repaint it, What's the best way, steel ? or Dural ?

Sincerely.

Hi CC - I looked  at the engine replica article on the n zealand Vintage Aviator website. They have a movie there showing the test run on their replica where it looks like some aluminium piping rather than steel, so I guess Dural may be ther best bet. Contemporary colour photos would help of course but fat chance of that I guess. There was (maybe still is) the URII motor ( no 2478) from MvR's 425/17 at te IWM, but I've only seen an old b&w photo (ref IWM Q31461) where these pipes look like weathered aluminiun. Cheers - Paul

Looking for Lepprechauns ???

Well, I took care of these too bright, too clean PE seatbelts...

A bit of oil painting here and there...

IMG_20200308_231104

As I did'nt like wasting things..

I gave a try to the AK paint but airbrushed now...

Seem to look good, at least it has worked fairly well with my old Badger 150

IMG_20200309_120051

We'll see it once it has cured thoroughly  !

More to come in a few days...

I once again have 5 evening work days...

So, no modelling...

Take care Gents ! And Ladies too of course !!

And if you take it on another few years from the F6F, you’re into delta wings and going supersonic routinely.  When I was 8, I was taught by a gentleman who had flown Camels for the RFC, and he still had a pilot’s license (this was in the late-60s).  Think of the change in that one lifetime!

Mind you, a few years ago (1986??) when visiting NAS Jacksonville I was introduced to an old buffer who showed me his original pilot’s license.  Signed by one of the Wright Brothers...

Great stuff there CC, really interested in this build. I have a couple in a Dual boxing rising to near the top of my build pile. I look forward to seeing how yours go together, especially those wings.

Cheers

Now, that's great encounter Crisp !!

Amazing peoples, I really loved to hear about such stories !

Last week, I was searching on my old U.S.N files from the '60s, my son came in and paid a look at the documents.

They are all stamped "Declassified"... He was wondering and asked me if I downloaded it...:evil_laugh:

I explained that I wrote a letter, send it by the post and waited...

He stayed in awe... just sayin' "Hey how much time did you wait for ??"

I replied "Almost 3 months" just looking at his face when I told that was so funny...

Hello Bob,

Take a seat, have a beer and a cigar , you're welcome !!

So far, it's a straightforward build, the surfaces of contact for glue are really tiny, so I use only green cap glue.

AFAIK, the wings are easy to fix, now, you know what to think about the kit's critics in the magazines....

So Gents !

Have a great modelling time !

Sincerely.

My wife’s grandmother was born before the Wright Brothers flew, and she watched Neil Armstrong walk on the moon.  Progress in the span of one life time.
