VF-1 Tomcats - Various

Some random shots of VF-1 Tomcats during visits to NAS Miramar, a.k.a. Fightertown USA...

Starting with standard markings for the time, Bu No 161296, NE 107, in 1983

Now the strange ones. SAM Volume 25 Number 1 has a profile of NE 105 in this scheme, stating that it was flown as an adversary aircraft. Anyone have any more on this scheme?

BuNo unknown, NE 111, March 1983. Canopy and windscreen masked for painting.

Don't know how I missed this post, very nice pictures, thanks for sharing !!!!

The pictures in the 1983 experimental scheme are of course particularly interesting. I had seen a picture of NE105 in the past (Vol.8 of the C&M series, dedicated to the Pacific Fleet Tomcat units), here they mentioned it was an experimental scheme, nothing was said about aggressor use.

When I first saw this scheme I assumed that it could have been part of tests that led to the adoption of the Tactical Paint Scheme, however the TPS for the Tomcat had been approved in February 1982, therefore this scheme is later. Of course could still be part of these tests anyway.

Another possibility is that the scheme could have been applied for a single exercise, as happened more often than many think on the Tomcat. However the scheme is too "cleanly applied" to have been just applied for a single exercise.

VF-1 was of course not new to experimental schemes, having been one of the units involved in the trials of the Ferris scheme.

Fantastic old school F-14s thanks for sharing them.

The "Adversary" schemes certainly have shades of the Ferris scheme about them, if someone wants to produce the decals they've got one customer waiting for them.

There have been decal sheets for the adversary schemes used by NSAWC late in the Tomcat career. Fightertown decals covered these in 1/72, 48 and 32 with their "Adversary Bad Cats" sheets and very good they are. I believe these sheets are OOP today so may be hard to find. A Su-27 style Tomcat was in another Fightertown sheet named "Adversary Ghosts".

Twobobs issued a 1/48 sheet with a blue/grey splinter scheme Cat and the Su-27 one (48-007) and another with the same blue splinter scheme and two non aggressors scheme, both of VF-24 and one in a brown splinter (48-100).

Not a splinter scheme but the same Twobobs in sheet 48-045 had a VF-74 in an unusual scheme that used by this unit during their time in the "adversary" role.

I have unfortunately no knowledge of any sheet covering these VF-1 aircrafts, would be good to have some.

True me neither.

However depending on how a little venture @Andrew and myself have planned, these splinter vf1 jets could be a possibility one day...

Regards all the other sheets you mentioned they are now long oop and rare. Seen half a 1/72 twobobs  nsawc sheet go for over $50 on us ebay the other day, only had the splinter white nosed black 20 on it, the red 31 tomcatsky had been used...

making some more would be a licence to print money...
