Red Arrows, Now and Then - Airfix Gnat and Hawk 1/72

You're welcome Johnny, I think you'll like it :)

Thanks Phil - I can see now! I see what you mean about the pink :)

Mothers' day lunch and a snooze this afternoon, I found some mojo this evening. The other side of the Gnat's been done:

... but the fin requires some settling so I'll have to leave that to dry before doing the bottom.

Started on the Hawk. The bumps on the wing punctured the transfer (both sides):

I hope a dot of white will hide it. The rest of my mojo was used up doing this:

I did the fin first as the position is obvious, then the long one down the side lining up to the fin (nightmare) and finally the intake and front ones.

Exhausted!

I love these (which makes it the first Hawk FROM AIRFIX that I have liked) still waiting for the Friday Hawks to come off their production line

I had the same problems with the things on wings for my Hawk, piece of junk it turned out to be, what was worse was that the undercart doors were grossly inaccurate and inadequate bits of rubbish

You made the right decision sticking yours up in flight, believe me

(when the Gnat is settled don't forget to put the missing lines in from the washing stuff across the wing roundels, huh)

Overall ,very nice tail marks

Nicely done

Thanks Bill :) Er, don't understand your banter there old boy... what?

Thanks John - I hope I do as well on the other side :)

Thanks Rob :)

Last visit to the surgeon this morning so (good news) no more ripping of the dressings but (bad news) no more free tools. Still a bit sore but definitely on the mend, at last!

Well enough to finish the transfers on the Gnat - have a look at the bottom!

Getting those serials not quite in line was a pain but that's what it says on the box!

I guess you want me to do another gloss coat now eh? Spray with thinned Klear or with Aqua Gloss do you think?

I bet you do know what I mean

40709168012_ff32ea5b99_z.jpg

The panel line across the roundel vanishes but appears on both sides of it

If you put a line onto the wing it carries on across the roundels too, it's the same paint on them as the wings so it should show as clearly where the lines are

That's all

Do YOU want to regloss them or are you pleased with what you have got?

Face it, we're only going to nitpick now you have gotten this far...

Thanks Johnny :)

Thanks Bill :) Ah, I thought you might mean the panel lines. They were sort of there after the MicroSol but not obvious enough. I've dobbed some Daco strong on them.

Oh, I do have a new toy to help with drawing / tracing / messing about. One of these:

HJ482?wid=572&hei=572&fmt=jpeg&qlt=95&op

My magic mouse rechargeable battery started playing up and these are only £10 more than a new magic mouse so I'm hoping it will help when drawing / tracing templates and masks.

I just need to retrain my brain and muscles for pen rather than mouse.

Old dog, new tricks. :hmmm:

Weird little side note, though it probably doesn't apply to you CedB.

I'm fully left handed, but somehow I tend to use a mouse right hand, don't know why.

But there's absolutely no way I could use a stylus in right hand.

Could be a different part of the brain for all I know.

So get ready to reprogram the ole grey matter.

Thanks Ian - I have (eventually) learned my lesson, gloss before transfers! :)

Thanks Rob - weird innit how we get trained for these things. I would guess your right handed mouse action was due to 'enforced' positioning of the mouse when you trained? :)

Just for Bill, Daco strong applied to the roundels last night:

Daco Strong rules OK by Ced Bufton, on Flickr

Great stuff.

Mojo required for Hawk transfers, hopefully later.

I'd go with an Aqua Gloss coat on top of them

Thanks Giorgio, will do. I've just checked the directions on the bottle and it says 'do not thin' (OK) and 'DO NOT ALLOW TO DRY IN AIRBRUSH' (their capitals). What do I clean it out with please?

This morning I thought 'Do I feel up to doing the stripes on the other side?'.

I topped up the water in the drinking duck and watched that for a while to calm myself.

Then I had a quick session with the Moody Useless Box to cheer my spirits.

Check hand shake - acceptable.

Off we go.

The fin flash went on perfectly. Then on with the first long stripe, lining it up with the fin strip.

Down, roll out excess, shifted, rats, lift and reposition.

Repeat.

THERE! Now align the front and RATS the back has shifted.

At this point I should tell you I had used my usual 'wet with MicroSet before applying' method and I now know that it softens the transfers. If you wait too long and mess about too much then...

I know one wants the 'Set to 'melt' the transfer so it settles once applied, but this is the first time I've torn one. Dammit.

It took me ages to poke and prod with various instruments and get the best fix I could.

It will need touching up.

Needless to say I didn't apply the 'Set to the front ones, using plain water instead (maybe Klear next time, I'll have it ready)

Now done, I need a lie down:

I read that too on the bottle; scary, ain't it? :frantic: TBH, I haven't used it yet through my airbrush, but I would use my standard procedure for clear acrylics: water right after finishing and emptying the airbrush cup, IPA, WINDEX, IPA.

And I would only spray it through my cheapo AB.

Sorry for the trouble you had with starboard side decals - this kind of things is what made me hate them :badmood:

Ciao

Thanks Rob, 'exhilarating' is one word for it! I have a few more... :swear:

Thanks Giorgio :) I'll try that, thanks.

Do you ever have one of those sessions when you approach the bench, prepare the tools and materials (including the Klear and brush!), cut the transfers into 'sides', being careful to put aside the tiny, tiny stencils and making sure you don't cut off any of the randomly placed identifying numbers:

25918536827_ebb0b34a6a_z.jpg

... and then look closely at the instructions and think 'You want me to do WHAT!!!???'

40790182651_d3e50c75b4_z.jpg

That's on top of Bill's warning about the shape of the door decals.

My mojo vanished like a toy balloon being let go. Go on, do the noise, I did :bleh:

I almost wished I'd masked it now. Almost.

Awaiting mojo return...

You're still in time ... provided that your masks don't overlap the decals you've already placed

I did mine wheels down and flaps deployed, and the wing L shape came as one piece each side.

So count your blessings!

You may find the instructions say apply before fitting the flap pylons.

Notches may be required in the piece along the flaps trailing edges.

And then touch in the appropriate pylon parts in white.

You may need to chop the diagonal line to fit either side of the mid pylon too.

If I can illustrate....

Probably said decal before pylons!😃

No, me neither.....

Wouldn't work out
