AFV Club 1/35 M113A1 - Finished

Recommended Posts

Here is how things look after a spray of Testors Dullcote over the pigment areas. It has muted the colours which I wasn't expecting but I think I prefer it. Looking back maybe it was a bit too stark before.

Here I have added gun metal pigments to the track horns as these would show signs of wear.

The tracks are finally on. Even though I still have quite a bit to do it's one of those big moments that makes you feel closer to the end.

Until next time.

Really nice !! The dusting looks very realistic 😎

What did you use for the chicken wire rolled fence ?

Cheers, E

The fence is made from Tulle fabric. I got it from Hobbycraft. Even asking for the smallest cut they could do will last me for years and years.

Looking really good and a nicely believable level of filth.

Love the scratches on the sides - must remember that.

I still need to build my Tamiya ACAV that I've had at least 15 years!

All the best

Ben

Looking good. Just a couple comments based on my experience manning M113-family vehicles. The U-shaped ridge around the rear ramp opening and the "bar" across the top of the rear opening are rubber gaskets and should be painted flat black. Looks like you might still be able to paint the gaskets. AFV Club added the oval plate on the roof at the driver-side rear corner. This plate was not on production M113A1s. It was found only on Pilot #3 so the oval engraving should be filled and the bolts sanded off. For your build, you could cover it with stowage...plenty of photos show stowage at that location.  Sorry that I did not see your build earlier, but you have an excellent build underway.

I highly recommend David Dolye's two books on the M113, "M113 APC in Vietnam," and "M113 Armored Personnel Carrier Walk Around." AFV left a lot of interior items out of the kit and the biggest mistake is not including engine grill mesh in the provided PE set. Eduard already has a new PE set for this kit on the market.

Mark, again a great build, especially like the aluminum undercoat for the interior. Look forward to more of your work.

Jeff,

You’re right about the plate around the fuel-filler cap on production M113A1, however a lot of gasoline M113 were converted to M113A1 and the fuel tank (with its oval cut out on the hull roof) with the fuel cell.

Most of my (Australian) M113A1s we’re so modified, and this was 1998-2000.

Thanks for pointing these out. I have since painted the rear door gaskets. Unfortunately the oval plate will have to stay at this stage. If it was pre-painting I would have rectified it but not at this late stage. One thing I will remember for when I build another one. I am going to be having a crate with a chair strapped to it in that area.

I started this kit originally back in January for a 3 month SIG on another forum. I have missed the deadline by quite a bit but in those early stages I was racing for the line. I would have loved to have gone to town scratch building lots of internal missing detail. It just wasn't a priority due to limited time to complete the build back then.

Also apologises for the picture quality over the last couple of posts. I have a new phone and I don't think the camera is as good as my 3 year old one.

This will probably be the final update before I'm calling it finished so here is how she looks currently.

Here the Legend resin PRC-77 radio has had a bit of updating.

Trying to find a modern tooled M79 grenade launcher proved to be a challenge. One can be found in a few Dragon weapon sets and Bravo 6 also do one in resin. Try finding these for sale anywhere close to the UK though is the problem. In the end I found a 44 year old Tamiya one in the spares box. It is quite basic so I drilled the barrel and scratch built the fore end ladder sight.

The Tasca M2 Browning with Live Resin ammo is looking sharp.

As I said before this will most likely be my final update for the WIP. Once I have it finished and RFI pictures done I will link it here.

Many thanks to all that have followed and contributed on the build thread.

Peace...

That looks much better toned down like that...IMO it was too heavy in the before clear coat pictures. The scratches down the side look too.

Quick update. She is finished apart from the rear ramp pulley needs painting and installing. I have ordered a couple of RB Models antennas which should arrive early next week. I also looked through my bases today but they are all far too big. You know what they say. Proper planning prevents p!$$ poor performance.
