Bump! This is another one I would really like to get to The Vote and then through it to become a Group Build. This has ample opportunities and variety for those wishing to specialize and build a nightfighter, or a shipkiller, or a tankbuster or a rec... onnaissaeur (?) whatever  AND for those who want to build one of each, one per month AND for those who wish to build all of those as a variant of the same airplane :hmmm:yes, even that is possible . So join us before it's too late!

that's what we like to hear!!

When I was thinking of the GB I wanted one that would have something for everyone with subjects on there own that never seem to make it to a GB of there own.

I am interested though some further clarification is sought for the Ship Killer and Recce subcategories.

Would a P-3 Orion configured with Harpoons in the Anit-Ship strike role be eligible?

And for the Recce category would the current 'RC' versions of the KC-135 family be OK? I suspect other ISREW assets like the RAF's Sentinel, E-7A and E-3 family not so? The last 2 are more surveillance, though is this a form Reconnaissance?

Good morning RAY

If I don't make a mistake I think that  the E-3 has some sort of ELINT equipments and I think that ELINT is part of the Reconnaissance job performed nowadays ..

But Rich is going to give us his answer very soon ...

Cheers

Patrice

Hi Ray,

They both would be fine to me. The Orion with Harpoons is definitely a ship killer.

As Patrice say's ELINT is very much a part of modern day reconnaissance, even the specialised surveillance aircraft could be seen as an integral part of modern recon work. I think most people think of Aviation Recon as a stripped down fighter fitted with cameras, something that hasn't changed since the war. Modern reconnaissance now is all about the visual and electronic spectrum.

I think for the sake of seeing some really interesting builds that these kinds of aircraft would be fine as well.

Plus because their numbers are even smaller I'd even be happy to allow AWACS into this category as there is rarely a GB that they are eligible. Any comments to or for this addition are appreciated as I would be happy to amend the eligibility for this group to include AWACS or even ground based Radar vehicles.

AWACS and other AEW (see, even me is learning these acronyms :rofl2:) get my support, if such is needed or counts. Ground based... yes, although there's a new GB proposal called "Flak Alley" that would suit these better - speaking of strictly AA only, of course. Counter battery and other ground seeking radars like Soviet Small Fred would definitely count as "recce", at least in a miniature war game :bounce:

I agree - to me reconnaissance is about finding out where the enemy is and what they're doing and that doesn't just mean photographing them. Plus a broad definition gives us more opportunities for interesting builds.

Great, count me in definitely. I have builds of all of the above planned at some stage. I currently have a 90% E-3D on the shelf of doom that needs resurrecting. But do not worry, I also have another E-3A, E-7A and a part started RC-13V to do.

ok that's sound positive, so I'll amend the recon theme to include AWACS.

see Ray you can now even do a Wedgetail!! Now that would look nice in 1/144th or 1/72nd!

phhht! 1/144! 1/72 all the way! :D

I also realised I have an EC-121 and DC-130 in the stash, the possibilities are endless for this proposed GB!

Silly question time again Rich I'm afraid.

Would an AC-47,-119 or 130 be eligible for this GB?

I know that gunships were discussed earlier and ruled out but wasn't sure if we were talking the AC birds or helicopters. The AC birds were definitely designed/modified to fight at night as they carry equipment such as IR sensors.

Also would WWII era night intruders count? At least part of their remit was to shoot down aircraft if they came across them.

Just asking, and definitely still participating either way.

arrr Craig. :D

For the Nightfighters I really do want to stick to the form we all know which was to shoot down enemy aircraft at night, which really came to an end with the Skyknight and Meteor NF's.

Night Intruders weren't designed solely for night fighter duties.

The Gunships are in a special category all of their own.

No problem Rich, just thought I would ask.

Great that the required numbers have been reached!

Still can't decide between a nightfighter or a recce bird, and no I won't be building both!
