The Specialist GB Chat

I'd like to join in here with a  tamiya SAS lrdg jeep in 1/35, I reckon it should qualify in  the recon bracket,  I've been looking for a reason to move this little kit up the pile and this, maybe is it?

hmmm....not the sort of thing to come a cross a Tiger in!

Oh dear I just realised this is a 1/72nd scale model!!!! :yikes: I've been reading a review on one of them, yeah individual tracks and I reckon saying 3mm wide is being very generous for this scale!

This is a review of one of the other versions...

https://www.onthewaymodels.com/reviews/IBG/EFerrer_IBG_UniversalCarriers_review.htm

No, I wouldn't fancy taking on a tiger in one of these. But the Boys was used effectively against panzer I's and II's, the soviet T26 (by the Finns), and the Japanese light tanks. Walt Disney produced a training film for it, which is worth a look

The review has some good ideas, might be helpful with the tracks. I do mean to see if I can replace some of the bodywork with brass, rather than just thinning it. But I'll make my mind up about that when I get my hands on the kit.

I hadn't though of these, but in their Recon role they fit the bill. Pity it's a Jeep and not one of the 30cwt Chevy's!

The chevy's are cool rich I agree, but I don't have one in my stash, (yet) black dog do some nice resin bits for them too, maybe when the GB arrives it may be both

I think I have something that would fit into this GB - 1:32 Hurricane IID (from the Fly kit) based in Burma as part of my 'Aircraft my Father fixed' long running project.

The Hurricane IID is the version with under-wing gondola mounted 40mm cannon which were specifically designed for Tank Busting. Most of the Hurricane IIDs that ended up in Burma were originally in North Africa and were called "flying can openers". My Dad was assigned to 5 Sqn in Burma which were initially equipped with a mix of these and Hurricane IIc but they were soon  all transferred to 20 Sqn and replaced with more IIc. I need to check my Fighters of the RAF at home for the exact details, but I think it should fit in here.

Oh dear I've just noticed that I've already built this one over the Christmas period

I'll need to find something else to build in its place - so looking at the stash, I've got a Sherman Firefly V or a recon Scimitar or Scorpion...

Rich, would you qualify an  USAAF A-20B Havoc ground attack a/c post Op. Torch in Tunisia -43 as a tank buster? V-P

not really, they weren't specialist tank busters. If you really want to build a Boston/Havoc, there's always the P-70 or Havoc Turbinlite, they both are eligible for the Nightfighter group.

I agree with you, that's why I asked first before taking my plans any further. I have a Mosquito nightfighter set up for this GB, a Tamiya goodie in 1:72. I may try to get some Malta based a/c decals, if not, I'll use the kit supplied ones.

I reckon this little kit may qualify,  it's a soviet aerosan, I reckon it's certainly a specialist vehicle, what do you reckon,  is it a 👍or👎 I may build it in this gb, I'm aware there are a few dimensional errors with the kit, but I like it and will build it out of the box if it's OK, although I have an lrdg, sas, jeep in reserve if not, or both maybe

Yes, good choice eh, looks as "specialist"  as a stuka with 37mm cannon dangling off each wing

hmmm but specialising in what other than being extremely odd!

The earlier RF-8 may have fitted into the Recon group, but this one........ hmm not quite.

Between that and my Boys carrier, this is turning into the 'stuff you wouldn't want to go to war in' GB.

I like the idea of the 'Stuff You Wouldn't Want To Go To War In GB'. I'll open with this:

V1 plane.

I think you were allowed to get off before it went bang.

I have actually wanted to scratch build a Bob Sempel tank for a while, but I wouldn't want to face the Imperial Japanese Army in it:

Bob Semple tank.

Ohh crikey @Churchill, you've trumped me there, good lord that's a dicey looking piece of hardware, as for the torpedo I reckon the pressure wave would have got you once you thought the job was done, and bailed

Well I suppose it would save you a long swim home. But we have land, sea, and air suggestions for the SYWWTGTWI GB now, and I think it would be a GB with potential. Vehicles that were obsolete before going into service, or badly outclassed by the opposition, or insanely dangerous to the users and likely to kill  them without the enemy having to do anything, or otherwise deeply flawed or misconceived in some way. Think of the duplex drive swimming tanks used on D-day, or the Horsas (known as 'hearses' by the troops). If unbuilt proposals were allowed, you have the german rocket powered armoured aircraft that were supposed to be flown through the tails of allied bombers. One for 2021?

I like it  @Churchill sounds like a great idea for a gb, put it forward I'm in

I'm not sure how you'd do that, or how to host it. I gather that proposals gathering a certain threshold of support go forward to a vote, annually I assume, or @Enzo Matrix just approves them, but I've no idea when the next vote is.
