Rabbit Leader
I had an idea for a potential GB last night and thought I'd put these words down to see what others might think? Now I trust that we all remember what year we were born - right?? Well then how about a Group Build to celebrate that particular year in model form. There are endless opportunities and it's not just limited to Aircraft! Here's an example - I was born in the year 1970. I can choose to build a model that perhaps first appeared in that year (say Airfix Meteor III, Chipmunk or Ford Capri, Frog Vengeance, Wyvern, Meteor IV etc.) or perhaps something that was specific to that year (RAAF Canberra on duty during the Vietnam War, new RAF Harrier GR.1, or perhaps the late Jochim Rindt's Championship winning Lotus 72). To keep a little bit of fun happening whilst also giving us a wee history lesson, each Gallery entry could also list five history defining moments that occurred that year - (1970 - deaths of Jim Morrison, Jimmi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Beatles split, Apollo 13, first 747 commercial flight etc.). Anyway - just thought I'd put it out there to see if this crazy idea gains any traction. Cheers.. Dave *Note - Multiple years for multiple members will be happily accepted. In my book if it’s anytime before 1903 - it doesn’t count! Surely you were born some time after that? Cheers.. Dave

Thats the reason why my stash is so big Remember, did I not build two Hawker Tempests in the Matchbox GB, nearly finished two Provosts and planned to build two Sepecat Jaguars, each one slightly different? In reality; the early years of the growth in popularity of plastic kit modelling. The kits of those times are not very good. You might call them ............ umm........ a very rude word Harry Webb was on about dolls when I was birthed If I can find a decent kit from my year I'm in; so pencil me in for now
vppelt68
1968. The Prague Spring uprising, Vietnam war, death of Jim Clark, loss of USS Scorpion, launches of Apollo 7 and 8... Great idea Dave, please count me in. V-P

So I'll happily except a Wright Flyer (...only joking mate!). 1 hour ago, vppelt68 said: 1968. Mancunian airman
Well, In my year Race riots in Notting Hill, Martin Luther King arrested for 'loitering and in Cyprus - British Army chief General Kendrew escapes an assassination attempt. Eisenhower & MacMillan were leading their countries . . . oh my weekly wage would have been £6 6 shillings I have an idea which Airfix kit was released for the first time and I think I have the version in the stash Ian
Rob G
January 4, 1967. Donald Campbell dies at the helm of Bluebird K7, trying to break his own water speed record on Coniston Water in England's Lakes District. 4 days later, I enter the world. This 'almost confluence' has always intrigued me (even though it was nothing more than sheer dumb chance) and Campbell has long been, if not a 'hero', certainly a figure of great interest. I guess I know what I'll be attempting. 1

So I take it you're of 1958 vintage? I'm sure there's plenty of juicy subjects associated with that fine year. Can I jot your name down as well? 1 minute ago, Rob G said: January 4, 1967. It was also a year full of 'Rolling Thunder' activity and I'm sure a number of new types first entered RAF service as well. I'll throw you into the mix as well - many thanks! Cheers.. A brief search threw up the Caspian Sea Monster, now that'd be fun!.......price might be an issue though! Then of course it was the year West Ham Utd won the World Cup for England......maybe a diorama using the Airfix 1/32 footballer set? Yes Inkerland won their one and only World Cup alright (was that really a goal?)... OK - I'll leave that one alone.... and the Beatles release 'Revolver' - what a smashing album. My all time best ever car I owned was a 1966 mint green HR Holden (probably need to be an Aussie to appreciate that), and the woman who takes all my money and constantly rolls her eyes when the courier knocks on the door was born on Boxing day! Now for modelling subjects, I can think of the Indonesian Confrontation and another year of mayhem Vietnam Rolling Thunder activity. Happy to have you on-board Mr. D - you are #7.

Reading the Wiki page for 1966, sheesh, how many Civvy aircraft went down. Two directly linked to bad weather over Tokyo International in successive days. Thanks Rabbit Leader. From a brief search: Yom Kippur war and the end of US involvement in Vietnam, as you've said. So perhaps Israeli or Arab aircraft, or something like the last Vietnam shoot-down (by either side). Also: First flights of the Kfir, Alpha Jet, C-9B, T-43, T-34C and Learjet 35 amongst others Jaguar A entered service in France and first GR.1s delivered to 226 OCU There was a Paris air show (notorious for the Tu-144 crash) and the first IAT at Greenham Common The MiG Ye-155 (a MiG-25) broke various records 8 Squadron re-equipped with the Shackleton AEW.2 So a few options there. Perhaps an excuse to buy the Airfix AEW Shack. Quite fancy the Ye-155 too. Wikipedia's page on 1973 in Aviation was mostly crashes and hijackings - not very inspiring!
Mr T
1954 for me if that would be OK for everyone. Four minute mile, end of rationing, last operational Spitfire flight, End of first Vietnam War after Dien Bien Phu falls. Also end of McCarthyism. Might need to think about a build as I restrict myself to mainly British stuff.
Giorgio N
When I first read the proposal I thought it was a bit crazy. Then I started feeling that the idea is so crazy that I love it ! Please add me to the list My year is an important one in aerospace, with the Eagle landing on the moon. This event alone is a good source of modelling subjects, like the Apollo capsule, the LEM, the Saturn V launcher and the famous "66" Sea King. Other random events in 1969 were: - Final flight of the XB-70 - Start of the US bombing campaign over Cambodia - the Daily Mail Transatlantic Air Race - the Harrier enters service - Soccer War between El Salvador and Honduras - First flight of the Boeing 747 - First flight of the Concorde - Several first flights in the USSR, the Su-17, the Tu-22M and the Mil Mi-24 I already have kits that would cover many of these events in the stash, I'll sure find something
Kallisti
Hmm, this could be good, so in 1961 we saw the following: Yuri Gagarin and Vostock 1 North American X-15 goes hypersonic mach 5 First flight of Dassault Mirage IIE Lighting F2 enters service Hawker P.1127 transitions from vertical to horizontal flight for the first time RAF send Hawker Hunters to Kuwait to protect it from threats from Iraq (Canberra and Valiants also deployed to Malta) Wallis Autogyro makes first flight Some interesting ideas... 1
