"To Remember The many" The Tamiya Lancaster 1/48

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. Hope you’re all having a smashing bank holiday?

some progress. 😊

while the riveting continued

28534327278_474f806b70_b.jpg

i managed to glue the radiator things in.

28534325438_29266a8a9e_b.jpg

The cowls also began to get glued.

look glue!! Real actual glue.

28534405778_9462af1ee9_b.jpg

a little bit of peg pressure ensured a good ish fit.

There are however gaps.

27537200867_961a20621e_b.jpg

pretty BIG ones but this got sorted with PPP.

28534403568_eb76fe90af_b.jpg

Then smoothed down and left to dry.

42357659642_0d6fb4a250_b.jpg

I found myself looking in the manual, remember that? To find what to do next.

it seemed that the tail was the next logical  step.

42408010531_8e87e9ee5d_b.jpg

what could go wrong? Easy peasy.

This bit. Fine, look how BIG it is Grandma.

This one however the peg is too BIG, what were you thinking Tamiya?

27537196497_0154d7b1a9_b.jpg

So I trimmed and glued.

i tried a dry fit.

41505167095_d28e83afe4_b.jpg

Hhhhhhaaannngggf on that doesn’t fit very well, it’s amost like I’ve put it on...... u p s i d e

41505167305_316fd214e8_b.jpg

D o w n....... now the different sized pegs make sense. :wall: not a problem. I added some tet, prized em off and glued em back the right way up.

28534324938_ae9ba6da91_b.jpg

I did “I hope” the last bit of riveting and set about painting my 1:1 scale kitchen. Check the masking. 😉

42407979521_b7c873e230_b.jpg28534327898_3d181618d1_b.jpg

Right oh. Another day another rivet.

backing paper off and you get a residue, not nice.

42407977821_7aa1029a34_b.jpg

simply use water to dampen a cloth and wipe. Luckily I can feel little bumps while wiping down so it bodes well.

42407978581_f1b806e8fc_b.jpg

The tail fits better now.

27537201267_732c59d03e_b.jpg

Here’s a close up of kit rivets and my rivets on the fuselage. I’m happy with that.

28534405058_e91d9a8d6f_b.jpg

The last few stubborn seams got some Mr S.

27537201577_58850f4ac2_b.jpg

And I did a bit of a tidy up and a dry fit for fun.

42357660062_e7a9b0aeda_b.jpg

Taking stock I decided the next step is to fit the canopy detail. Paint the remaining inside back plate, glue on the canopy ready for big painting. 😃

so here’s what’s left in PE interior land.

42408010431_2caf077e59_b.jpg

These get fitted to the inside of the canopy.

28534394928_1525df14d0_b.jpg

Aaaaand then fitted.

27537196927_f2b5eff53e_b.jpg

i fitted the side panels to the canopy with gator glue. (The white stuff) and checked for gaps.

28534395758_71bcbe5d28_b.jpg

its not a bad fit bit I’ve seen better. I need to fill those, probably PPP.

fingers crossed I can do more today as I’ve earned brownie points painting the kitchen.

Take it easy gents. Hope you all get a beer of two in as well as a bit of plastic fantastic. Oooh and I just discovered that the Lanc is at Cosford this year. 🕺 yessss.  Happy modeling you lot and thanks for looking.

Johnny boy.

Smashing update, Johnny! :wow:

She's looking great with canopy and rivets and all :clap2: :clap2:

Not far for priming, I think?

Ciao

The Lanc reproduction front section that we have at Avro Heritage, Woodford, will be there. It’s got everything except the smell. It will be accessible to the public. I’ll be at Cosford not with my museum guide hat on but in my Space Cadet herding capacity.

Great at work on your Lanc, it will be something to behold when it’s finished.

"What what chaps. That'll confuse Jerry fighter pilot as he approaches for a strafing run."

"How odd. Vye on erz iz ze Lancaster flying upzide down?"

"Indeed. Yes. Should give the tailgunner a few extra seconds while the buggers are agog with confusion."

Can't wait to see how those rivets look.

I just had a thought. Is there any way you could take a small piece of the wreckage and either incorporate it, unpainted, into the model or make a part from it and leave it unpainted so that, in a way the original aircraft lives on?

Why thank you.

If you look through this thread you’ll see where to move it to . I’ve moved mine, I wasn’t going to but I figured in for a penny and all that.😂. It’s slightly back a bit. Not too much of a pain to do but be careful all the changes can be a time sink and a half.

will you be doing a WIP?

About those windows.

While digging into the loft for something I didn't find, I did come across "Scale Models" the Jan 1976 issue, where the Grand Slam issue was being reviewed. From C. Rupert Moore himself:

"... the larger square window on each side of the fuselage should be moved back by .3 in.- this is an error also on the MAP scale drawings which should be corrected; a glance at any photograph showing this window on a full size Lanc. will show that the window is over the L.E. with its aft edge just forward of the centre line frame of the astro dome. The smaller window in front of these should also move back .125 in. to be correct."

Back then the kit cost £7.99.

A somewhat belated thanks for your input! (Somehow I forgot to turn on reply notifications for this thread.)

I'll use your info to move the window back a bit. Also, I just recieved the Belcher engines and they look the part for sure, looking forward to use them soonish. :)

I will contemplate doing a WIP here on BM but haven't decided yet.

Thanks again!

I am about to start another Tamiya but it wont have the level of detail you have put in Johnny.

I have already made a start on back-filling the windows with 40 thou and I have also deepened the actual bomb-bay . . . .

Your aircraft is going to be something to behold . . .. .

Hi Johnny,

The radiator things are exactly that, cooler matrices for the oil and water/coolant systems, very similar to your car. The rivet work is outstanding, it is quite pronounced on the real thing.

Cosford is being flown by my friend, I'll ask him to give you a wave!!

Hello Inaseng,

If you have a pic of what is visible from the access door... I'll be glad to see it.

I'll correct the door size and let it open...

Thank you beforehand.

Sincerely.

Are you referring to the big air intake or the smaller ones on the sides? I don't have the set at hand when writing this so can't check if there are different versions of the air intakes.

Yes exactly !

My Belcher set as bigger air intakes for the interior engine nacelles.

But this feature has been installed on the Lancs designed for the Tiger force as a kind of tropicalization...

So some Lancs has this bigger air intake and some has only the normal ones...

The bad new is there is no rules, It's a a check your subject matter !

I did a moulding of the little air intake, will do a second one

Because, Phantom has originally only the little ones.... :poo:

So if you need it... PM me and I will make a set for you...

That's the magic of BM !

sincerely.
