Andy Moore
This was a quick weekend build of Bandai's box scale (1/144) TIE twin pack. The kit turned up on Friday, and I built them up that evening, adding a little battle damage to one of the standard TIE's solar panels. The X1 was a straight OOB build. They were painted yesterday (Saturday), then weathered today. Nothing fancy with the painting/weathering. Just base coats over a black primer, detail painting, then a few pin washes and some dry brushing over the damaged areas on the panel. This is how they looked on Friday night And then fully finished tonight The obligatory scale comparison shots with paint pot and, of course, Nigel. The Gunze barley grey in the photo was used for the main base coat on both TIEs Thanks for looking 45
Steve_farrier
I think that’s pretty exceptional work on such a small scale and in such short time! Nice! Great to see some damage too!

Wulf
Awesome! How did you do the battle damage on this tiny scale? The solar panels are painted with Vallejo Steel again, i guess?
Hunter Rose
Cool, really like the damage on the tie fighter, as they would say in Starwing "W-W-WING DAMAGE!"
Andy Moore
Thanks guys 2 hours ago, Wulf said: Awesome! How did you do the battle damage on this tiny scale? The solar panels are painted with Vallejo Steel again, i guess? Yes, Vallejo steel over a satin black base for the panels. The damage was done mainly with a knife. I cut some larger chunks off with clipper first, then chipped the edges more with a knife. The pitted texture around the damaged areas was done by picking at the surface with the tip of the blade. eureka
Superb work. The battle damage is surreal considering the scale.

Meteors
These look great, Andy! Really glad you’ve done these, I’m planning on doing a trench run diorama somewhere down the track, and these colours look great, I love the blueish tone, so I’ll definitely be trying out the ones you’ve suggested. Cheers, Tom
evansdad
I would love to know how you did the damage to the TIE's solar panel without wiping out the detail. I understand you added some fine details back, but how were you able to manipulate the fine grille work? Any progress photos of that process?

I understand you added some fine details back, but how were you able to manipulate the fine grille work? Any progress photos of that process? It wasn't really anything more than just gently picking at the edges of the damaged areas with a knife. In some areas I sliced into the plastic between the ridges of the solar panel, then carefully opened up the little slivers of plastic to leave a more frayed edge. There are a couple of sections that cracked, and almost came away, but I added a little liquid cement to hold them in place and used the effect to my advantage (or at least pretended it was intentional). The only details that were added are the bits of wire sticking out from the damaged areas. That's just thin fuse wire pushed into 0.3mm holes drilled in the edges of the panel. I'll take some more close-up photos that might hopefully show what was done a little better. Andy
Andy Moore
@evansdad as promised, a few close-up shots of the damaged areas. I don't have any shots of it before the painting was done, but hopefully these will show what I did a little better Andy
Will Vale
Ooh I like that, the damage looks very natural! I noted you didn't (dare?) do anything bad to Mr. Vader's personal ride. W
Mindmax
Dear Andy, Could you please recommend an airbrush (pistol and compressor) for this kind of work you show us in your posts? I would like to try painting my Bandai models the way you have shown. Many thanks and best regards, Mark

I personally prefer Harder & Steenbeck, as they're well made and very easy to clean and maintain. The model I use is an H&S Evolution with a 0.2mm needle. Regarding compressors, I use a cheap Chinese built one which does everything I need. I would recommend getting one with an air tank, like this one, as it means the motor doesn't need to run constantly. Andy

Noobarama
Those are looking great! Especially the damage on that TIE fighter seems very random to me, great work!
Badder
Awesome work as always, and even moreso at that scale. I would imagine that damage would affect aerodynamics...... Rearguards, Badder
