PlaStix
It's going to be a while before I actually start this GB build because I've got two other GB builds on the go already - one on the way to being complete - the other hardly started. It looks like I'm going to be the obvious one who makes a Hurricane Mk.I - everyone else who has started their build threads so far seems to be going for more adventurous projects. Oh well....... This is the kit - Airfix's new tool 1/48 version: And I'm going to make it as this version: .......basically because I was lucky enough to see it at the Victory Show a couple of years back - the show takes place less than a mile from our house and the aircraft fly over us all weekend. A few photos from the airshow: If you would like to know more about the actual aircraft there is a website: www.hurricaneheritage.com I also took some close-ups of lots of the detail - which I hope will be useful and I have some video of it too - on the ground and in flight. If I get time I'm currently planning to motorise the prop and have it displayed in flight. If I think time is going to be too tight I may do it without the motor and display it on the ground - we'll see. One thing - I won't have to worry about much weathering! Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix Edited May 14, 2018 by PlaStix
modelling minion
This should be good! A Stix build, a Hurricane and Warwickshire themed! I'm sold on all counts . The Victory Show has been a fantastic venue for getting close up and personal with classic warbirds, it was a real shame that the flying didn't happen last year but hopefully this year will go ahead. We must have been very close to each other and not even known it as I have very similar pictures.
Col.
Ooh nice one Stix! This sounds a cracking project and I'm sure not the only Hurricane we'll see here. Welcome to the GB.
stevej60
Great choice Stix,a pretty flawless build the only tricky area is the mating of the fuselage to the wing with all the cockpit tubing etc, would look great with the spinning prop I suppose build wise you balance the time fitting the motor against the fitting and painting of the u/c wheels etc?
Foxbat
I'll be following this closely. I have been collecting the various versions of this kit, and was going to do one myself but then the new Sea Fury happened Andy
Hewy
Nice choice stix, i did have a hurricane in the stash, an italeri 1/48 that I'd earmarked, but you'll a far do a better job of the old bird than me, and i dont mind downgrading to the typhoon, looking forward to a great build Glynn

You are very helpful as always! If you do have one do you want to drop me a PM? - no rush - I won't be starting this project for a few weeks yet. I haven't even opened the bags inside yet so didn't know what was in there. Kind regards, Stix Edited February 23, 2018 by PlaStix
PlaStix
Having recently finished my JGSDF TYPE 10 TANK in the 10th Anniversary GB I have now made a start on this project. First off - a few photos of the parts on the sprues: Decals: Sample of the instructions: I am still planning on having this one displayed in flight so these are the extra bits'n'pieces I'll be using: First job was to get the parts for the cockpit area removed from the main runners and cleaned up and ready for painting. You can see how I leave some bits of sprue on so I have something to hold onto while I am painting with the brushes. I had forgotten how soft Airfix's plastic seems when compared to those that I have been experiencing with my recent projects with Dragon, Tamiya and Eduard kits. It took me quite a while to remove a variety of seams in a range of locations on the parts. Anyway this is them removed and cleaned up: Then I got all these painted with a couple of thinned (with water) coats of Revell's Aqua Anthracite applied with a small flat brush: Most of these parts are going to be aluminium which I am going to dry-brush on - hopefully tomorrow. As you may be aware I am building this kit as R4118 - a restored Hurricane. If you would like to know more about the actual aircraft there is a website: www.hurricaneheritage.com Comments and suggestions welcome. PlaStix
22 hours ago, Col. said: Nice to see you get this one underway Stix and to read a bit about your particular subject choice as well Thanks Col. Yes it's an interesting aircraft/project and I like the fact I'm making a version of an aircraft I've seen and photographed. Today began with dry-brushing the parts above with Revell's Aluminium and painting some of the features: Then all these parts were assembled: Compared to some of the work I have done on my previous aircraft builds I am not going to do any extra detailing in the cockpit of this project as there is going to be a pilot in place and the canopy closed. It has been fairly straight forward so far but, as I mentioned above, the plastic itself seems soft and there are lots of seam lines to sort out. The softness also affects the detail - which is soft in places and doesn't work as well with my kind of painting - washes and dry-brushing.........we'll see...... Sprue D in my kit seems to have been slightly misaligned when being made and some of the parts require additional cleaning up. For their new tooling kits, Airfix need to get better organised as to where they put ejection pins - some are in locations which are going to be visible when there are locations nearby/adjacent which will not be seen: More tomorrow I hope. Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix
modelling minion
A great start Stix, the metalwork has come out very nicely. Agree with you 100% about the location of the ejection pins, something Airfix really need to tackle, perhaps when they finally pull their fingers out and do some Mk.II Hurricanes!

Col.
Drybrushing the silver over a black base has produced a wonderful effect Stix. Nice work Agree with you about the soft detail and unfortunatelly placed ejector pin marks though; Airfix really do need to up their game in these and some other areas to remain competitive.

I was quite pleased with the aluminium effect. I was looking at how the actual metal tubing looks in photos and it's kind of flat - so I thought - if I just paint it on it's going to look too bright and shiny. I thought dry-brushing it might get closer to the flat look. In the end not much of it is going to be seen because of the way I am going to display it. I agree - a Mk.II would be great and I'm sure there are a few of us that could help them decide where to put any ejector pins! Thank you for your comments. Yes Airfix are doing themselves no favours with this standard of plastic and some poor mould design. It's a shame really because the actual kit is very good but these little bits just stop them being top of the pile. I have managed to get a bit more done over the weekend but there's not as much to show for it. First job was making sure the motor for the prop would fit. I had to file off parts of the insides of the radiator mounting blocks on each side. It took a while but I eventually got the motor to sit centrally and level. Then I had to drill out the pin which Airfix provide for fixing the prop in place but allowing it to spin. Once drilled out I glued it onto the motor: I painted up more of the insides - thinned Revell Anthracite first followed by dry-brushing of those areas which need to be aluminium with Revell's metallic Aluminium - I still need to paint the upper mid sections of the cockpit sides with Humbrol 78: There was some test fitting of the seat unit and spars on the lower wing section: I don't think I'm going to use the decal on the instrument panel so I painted it first with thinned Revell's Anthracite and then did some very light dry-brushing with Light grey: I also took a few more pictures of the cockpit assembly - just to prove I had painted it - since it won't be seen once the pilot and canopy are in place: I did also trim the seams off the pilot figure and assemble him. However, I did do a test fitting first, before adding the arms, where I discovered - of course - that Airfix hadn't designed him to fit this cockpit! Poor chap had to have one of his legs broken off and then re-assembled in such a way that he can operate the pedals! I then sat his torso in the seat and only then glued his arms in place - to make sure he could use the joy-stick and other controls! Unfortunately I forgot to take a photo. More next weekend. I'm hoping that I might get the main parts glued together this weekend so I can get onto the painting as soon as possible. Fitting the motor seems to be the thing that's slowing me down at the moment. 15 hours ago, stevej60 said: Excellent work on the cockpit Stix, great idea with the dry brushing. Thank you very much Steve. I think the dry-brushing has worked quite well to give a more flat effect. I'm hoping to get some more work done on this project tomorrow. In the meantime I thought I would post some more photos that I took of the actual aircraft when I was at the Victory Show a couple of years ago. This time they are all of it on the ground and I tried to take some to show more of the detail. Unfortunately they are all taken from the port side as I didn't want to loose the spot I had got myself into to take photos of the aircraft when they were flying. I hope they might prove useful to anyone else building a Mk.I Hurricane. Kind regards, Stix 4

Today's modelling progress. Bit of work on the instrument panel - Klear in the dials and a bit of colour here and there: Test fit of the cockpit framework against the sides: You can see in the above photos how I have routed the wires for the motor. Then I glued the IP and bulkhead to the port side: Test fit with the framework: I also did some work on the display stand - which has to have the wires for the motor going through it - I used 4mm aluminium tube. I've bent the tube so that the top section rests in the top of the back fuselage to support the Hurricane when on display: Next up I glued the fuselage halves together: Once the glue had set I fixed the motor in place with CA glue and then tested it by using BluTack to hold the spinner in place: Then with the motor working: I have also been doing some painting on the pilot figure.
