Rick, if you're looking for Racking Grey in Halfords you will find it shelved with what they call "Specialist and Decorative Paint" NOT the normal car paints.  You can do click and collect on the Halfords website so you don't waste a long journey just to find it's out of stock.

Thanks for the tip - got some yesterday as it happens. Did exactly that - otherwise a 20 mile round journey!

Been messing with it tonight. Needs a deft hand compared to airbrushing! Thick paint that comes out fast so needs a fast pass.

Computer issues tonight so not sure I can get pics up.

Some modellers can get good results from a rattle can but personally I prefer to decant Halfords paint into my airbrush.    If you've never done that before, you need sellotape, a drinking straw, a piece of kitchen foil and an empty airbrush paint jar.  Put the foil over the mouth of the jar and poke a hole in it big enough to take the straw.  Shake the can for at least a minute then sellotape the straw over the nozzle. Insert the straw through the hole in the foil and squirt.  Once you have enough paint in the jar remove the foil and replace the jar lid but don't tighten it fully.  Leave the paint to stand for at least two hours till the gases boil off.  When you're ready to use the paint give it a gentle shake and if there are no bubbles visible you're good to go.  If you can still see bubbles you need to leave it a bit longer.  My experience is that as long as you store it in a tightly closed jar decanted paint will remain usable for up to 36 hours

Yes thanks skodadriver - I'm normally exactly the same. I do that with the Tamiya spray cans when doing the cars - way more controllable I find. For some reason, though, I chose to go with it straight from the can. Quite surprised at the paint tbh. It went on quite thick but as the VOCs vapped off the paint film pulled down tight and quite thin - I still have surface detail amazingly! Happy now so decals soon/next. Can't wait!

Cheers Rick.  I must learn to stop giving advice to people who don't actually need it.   I was a teacher in a previous life!

No worries skodadriver - always good to hear other's techniques, can never stop learning and besides, there may be others read it who don't know! 😀TBH I wasn't convinced with this paint as it seemed too thick to airbrush and couldn't decide what thinner to use. My guess would be white spirit as it's enamel......?

Getting there but they are tough decals. Much use of the hairdryer here!

Judging by that picture you have got it well and truly sorted.

That is looking spectacular!

Thanks guys. They seem to be responding. They are very stiff but seem to be quite thin and with the use of the hairdryer they settle down into the surface detail pretty well. I have discovered that they seem a bit vulnerable to Dacos own setting solution especially when the hairdryer is in use. Ask me how I know! 🙄

Progress this weekend. Got the last of the 12 (yes, 12) decals that make up the rear fuselage/fin artwork plus some of the other livery. These decals are really not very nice to work with being very stiff, prone to silvering and resistant to Microsol - even the OK natrucrions specifically state that and advise use of Daco Strong. The hairdryer allows the Microsol to work though. I shall try to use as much of the generic sheet in the kit in preference as they are lovely to use and go down beautifully.

No sign of any struggle with the decals there, it looks outstanding. That's a mighty impressive job there and I can't wait to see it finished.

Thanks guys - I think I'm there now so, stick a fork in it, I think it's done! 😂

It's been new territory for me  but it's been a blast and I've learned a heck of a lot along the way. Those decals fought me every inch of the way but Daco medium and strong decal solutions and copious use of the hair-dryer brought them to heel eventually. Not my finest hour (well several) decalling so I used as much as possible from the generic sheets; they were so much friendlier!

Anyway, enough chatter, here she is, the Daco Skylines 737-300 with their own Western Pacific "Colorado Springs" livery decal sheet.

C+C welcome in equal measure

  • Spad changed the title to Spads' other GB entry - Daco Skyline -300 with WP Colorado Spring decals - #FINISHED#

Thanks guys - appreciated!

Also appreciated is all of the support and encouragement I've had during these builds - thanks to all who joined in!

@ RAY - I have others in the stash - specifically a trio of Concordes - a couple of the ancient Airfix Concorde interpretations; one BOAC and the alternative boxing in Air France livery, plus the later production version in BA colours.

@FortyEighter - Go for it,  it's a very satisfying scheme to build up, I just hope the current production decals are more akin to the Simpsons set for flexibility!

Do you have any pics of those other two models?

I like this a lot, I may have to do this one for my collection and not let SWMBO choose the next colour scheme from this airline.

Thanks Jabba! Go for it - it's a complete hoot! I looked into the bottom of my teacup and see more Daco WestPac 737s in my future!
