AGS
A friend of mine, a private autogyro pilot, directed me to the website history of his club, the Enstone Sport Flying Club. The second paragraph in this history gives an intriguing account of an apparently secret unit comprising 6 all-black Lancasters based at Enstone. These aircraft were specially modified ostensibly to carry atomic bombs. See link below: http://www.enstoneaerodrome.co.uk/history.htm Does anyone have any information available on this unit and on the Lancasters? Graham Boak
As the British atomic bomb was not begun until after the war, when the Americans closed down the communication that had otherwise been open, this story is clearly misguided. Which doesn't mean that six (or some other number) Lancasters weren't based at Enstone, although it seems a bit unlikely that anything highly secret would be carried out anywhere other than somewhere comparatively remote.
