Curtiss Kittyhawk Mk.IA 1/72 Special Hobby

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

this is the brand new Special Hobby kit quickly assembled over the past few days. It was very pleasant modelling experience and in fact my second P-40 kit from Special Hobby I had the privilege to built (will post the P-40K later on).

We have a new title from Valiant Wings to be announced soon which will include, among the others, a full-build article of this kit.

Cheers

Libor

I've just taken delivery of my one of these, I've already got the P-40N and they both look very nice in the box.

Yours looks great made up, very impressed.  Beautifully weathered too!

Libor,

I was wondering how you managed to get one of these so quickly- until I saw your location! Very nice build and finish. Can't wait to see the E and N I have on order, as well as the K. Well done!

Very nice build, at first I thought it was in 1/48 scale

What color did you use for the undersurfaces ? it looks too dark to be Azure blue ?

best

Christian.

Thanks everyone for comments!

cger: the under surfaces seems to be a bit dark on the period shots. Special Hobby suggested Dark Mediterranean Blue, which I mixed from Gunze H328 + some medium blue.

Jason: good choice, that's one of my suggestions too:-)

Michael: honestly, I did have enough time to compare it, this obviously waits for some of "virtual" modelers among us :-) But can't see any disturbing features of this kit; there are some minor things to be pointed out, but nothing really serious.

An absolutely superb looking Kittyhawk.  Expertly applied weathering and exhaust staining.  I think I'll need to get myself one of these as my Hasegawa and Revell ones are looking a little long in the tooth.  I believe this is one of the aircraft flown by the great Clive Caldwell.  Can anyone explain why the roundels on many Kittyhawks seemed to have their leading edges worn away like that.  I haven't seen it on a any other type.

Correct, flown by Clive Caldwell at certain time frame. If you mean the fuselage roundels, these seems to be partially overpainted with Middle Stone applied over original Dark Green (seen mostly on Mk.I/IA deliveries).

Thanks again for comments gents!

Ah yes, I see.  The overpainting corresponds to exactly where the original green has been over painted.  Thanks.

Nicely done!

I have the P-40N on the bench just now and so far I've been very impressed with the fit. The wing trailing edge needs some thinning, but at the moment that's the only quirk I've spotted.

Agree. On my second build I addressed that with CMK resin flaps as the kit seems to be pre-designed to accept them (in other words this needed just few cuts and the flaps fitted inside like a glove).
