Frog Squad GB Chat

Hi Serge,

If you do make the Typhoon I have a spare sheet of Frog decals for it. It might be wise to coat them with varnish or Microscale Liquid  Decal Film as a precaution but the set I used a couple of months ago worked fine. If interested send me a PM with your details and I will be happy to post them.

Cheers

Pete

I was at the Elstree show today (an excuse for not having started on the Spitfire VIII yet...) and a couple of FROG kits somehow ended up in my possession...

FROG-Lynx.jpg

If I get the Spitfire built, the Lynx will probably follow, as I've never seen it built, though the kit is pretty common (there were apparently 45000 made, and it was pretty much available in model shops well into the 1980s - I have a feeling it was more expensive than the Matchbox and Airfix Lynxes, which might explain poorer sales).

The Spirit of St Louis will probably stay unbuilt - if I feel like building Lindbergh's plane, I'll probably do the Revell 1/48 scale kit from the mid-2000s that I have in the stash somewhere.

Still an awful lot of Frog types as yet missing from the list - Supermarine Attacker, Fokker DXXI, Twin Mustang, He219, Do17Z, Westland Wessex, Sea Fury, Wyvern, Lysander, Firefly, Barracuda, Mirage III, Tempest, Zero, Macchi MC202, Fw190A, Meteor 4, Hunter, Corsair, Mosquito, Boston/Havoc, Jaguar, Harrier and He111  to name but a few. Come on, you know you want to build one!,

Incidentally just realized the Mig 3, Lagg3, and Yak 3 Emhar kits I built a couple of years ago are probably ex Frog - they certainly got around!.

So I flew 2 1/2 hours down to Melbourne and back today to attend Australia’s premier Model Expo and Swap meet. With a firm eye on Frog kits I managed to acquire the small stash below for what honestly are bargain prices. There were others, however the asking prices were a little too high for what they really are. Special thanks should go to @Rob S for gifting me the Barracuda as a birthday present. It was great spotting a fellow Queenslander so far away from home and the kit was just perfect. Funnily enough, I’ve just opened it up to find a nice sealed bag, good decals and what’s this - instructions for the Frog Mosquito!! Oh well, I’m sure I can work things out without them.

@JOCKNEY, you will see that I’ve managed to find the Spit and V1 set that you were happy to let go, so I can spare you the postage quotation duties on that one. Thanks again for offering yours.

After seeing  @PeterB‘s DH Hornet thread I felt like having a go at one of these myself. This kit however has a badly scratched canopy which looks to be a pain to repair. I don’t know if there was ever a vac replacement so if anyone knows of one or has a spare, can they please let me know.

The mint ‘rouge’ kit at the bottom was bought whilst thinking about next years Classic kit GB. So if your having a tonne of fun here, make sure you give @Wez a quick shout and put your name down for his Heller classic kit GB as well.

Now its doubtful that any of these kits will be built for this GB, but it’s nice to show them off all the same.

Cheers.. Dave

Hi Pat,

Actually I have come to the same conclusion. Being my first GB I have gone off in a rush, but now I have decided it should be  possible to build 6 in the time available I will slow down - better for my blood pressure and alcohol intake! I suppose I am enjoying it enough to get a bit of an "adrenaline rush", but will go at a more sedate pace from now on.

Pat was only having a bit of a lend Pete, but I’m sure you knew that. It’s great to see a new GB member having so much fun and actively posting useful and factual information. Six is a huge number of GB kits to consider, however we all know you’ll get there on whatever potion you’re adding to that breakfast cereal each morning!!

Cheers.. Dave

Well done, Dave, now that's what I call a great day out! These Meet and Swaps sound like modelling heaven. I bet all the boxes were opened on the way back so hopefully no sacrifices to the aero-carpet monster. I've got a train trip in the middle of this week so one of my unstarted kits will be going with me.....

Actually Mike, I kept them all shut until I got home and from a fairly quick glance, all parts seem to be safely accounted for.

I did see a Russian produced R-100 Airship which I did open up and take a peak, however I was a little disappointed by the quality of the plastic so left it there. I know I’ll never get my hands on an original Frog kit, however I felt I wouldn’t have enjoyed building this one in the state that it was in.

Thanks for the advert Dave.  Yes, next year's classic GB is Heller, more of the same but with a Gallic flair!

Hopefully, I'll find the time to enter this GB, just got to get the pesky exams out of the way!

All good Pete

Think of the Frog Squad GB as a fine wine or single malt, it is to be savoured, enjoying every moment.

There is no Gaelic translation of mañana, because it would all be far too hasty !

cheers Pat

Good luck with your exams Wez. Although it pains me to say it, exams will have to take priority here as there's no point risking the outcome just to play along with a a bunch of old people trying to rekindle their youth with a pile of crusty old plastic. Focus on the prize young man, get rich, retire early and then enjoy all that disposable time... I shar'nt mention the failing eye sight and loss of motor skills that often occurs by the time you get there!

Dave,

You almost made me splatter my breakfast across the laptop!

I am focussed on the prize and there's times when early retirement seems like a pipe-dream and other times when it seems entirely achievable, as for getting rich....

I already know about those, I'm 55 next birthday.

I've been one of those for years!

You're so right, my company are sponsoring me to do a degree, this is my penultimate year, holding down a fulltime job then coming home to study makes Jack a dull boy and is the reason I can't do any modelling between September and June.  The incentive not to fail the exams is not only on the personal achievement front but there's the financial incentive of not having to pay my sponsorship fees back to my employer!

The timing of the Classic Heller GB is because by then I will have finished my studies completely, the final module gets handed in next September and I shall be free to do some modelling (and all those little jobs the wonderful Mrs Wez may have saved up for me).

I'd like to be able to simultaneously laugh at, thank and like your post as it really made me smile, as I can choose only the one I've just settled for liking it instead.

Well having totally misrepresented your vintage @Wez I feel a little sheepish, however now knowing all that, double hats off to you for putting in all those hard study yards - well done.

Part of me (turning 49 tomorrow!) says that I should probably get back into something to upskill myself, however the thought scares me no end so that’s about as far as things get. Although not wishing to knock the years and months off too quickly, we will all look forward to the back end of next year when you can finally put your feet up and spend all those spare hours on the modelling bench, although something tells me that Mrs Wez may have other plans! (They always do).

Cheers.. Dave

I have just been onto the Kingkit website, and the Frog Fairey Rotodyne is avaliable for a mere £149.99

Shhhhh.... Don't tell Pat, he'll likely auction off one set of his twins to fund something bizarre like that. Find him an R-100 Airship and the other pair will be punted off as well!

Cheers.. (anonymous member).

Digging around my FROG kits, I turned up a few pilots. All 1.72 scale apparently!

IMG-7689.jpg

Left to right, Vought Corsair, P38 Lightning, Vimmy, Mosquito.

I couldn't find any Trailblazer standing figures, they make this lot even smaller.

If you have the Bleriot XI, check the standing giant and the tiny little stick monkey that comes with the kit.

Almost the same with the Lysander kit.

If you are a spy that have landed in foreign country, you certainly stick out if you are 2.2 meter tall

I've almost completed everything else on the bench, my Trainers GB Vengeance (which wasn't finished on time) is almost done and my Avenger in the specialists GB well underway. So it's time to dig out some Frog and Frogspawn and get stuck in here. A cursory search of the stash revealed these (and a Chematic Shackleton) so the first quandary is where to start? The second quandary is should I look further? I know there is a Master, Sea Venom, Baltimore or Maryland, Gannet and a Martlet at least, along with an incomplete Barracuda and Skua. And lots of Sea Vixens I got before the newer versions were released.

I've just done a Seahawk for the 50's GB so should I do another? This is a very early Frog with the moulded in pilot so something different and I've got transfers left over from the Hobbyboss build as well as a few in the transfers collection. I haven't made a Firefly since doing the Airfix one back as a kid so that wouldn't be new and the last Shark was when I was a kid too. The Shark is in an original Frog box but the plastic inside looks more like Novo. So I think I'll start with the Firefly and Shark and see how we go, as I also want to do something for the D-Day GB.

Great post 825, sounds as if your well and truly into this GB caper!  Now besides the Shark, we currently don’t have any of the other kits pictured so whatever you decide will be good to see. Of course you are free to build whatever you like so a Firefly and (third GB) Shark will be just perfect!

Cheers and welcome aboard.. Dave
