Frog Squad GB Chat

Pete.. feel free to build whatever you want and a second or even third Shack (should we be so lucky) would always be welcomed either way.

Also appreciate your kind offer to provide original Frog decals should anyone come up short. I’ll be attending our local swap meet next weekend so that opens up more purchase opportunities should I see something cheap but not quite complete.

Cheers.. Dave

Crikey @Peter B, £1 a bag, that's s bargain and what a kind offer.  I am not sure which option I will build, but they give you two sets of roundels etc, so there's going to be a spare set and if you want them you are more than welcome to have them.

All the best

Chris

I did some archaeology and found these in my stash

Frog & Novo - The first I came in contact with in late 70's and early 80's.  Novo with selfdisintegrating decals if you mentioned the word water.  A Swordfish from Donetsk toys factory sneaked in there too

32891512657_e491e5c78d_b.jpg by Jan H, auf Flickr

Eastern Express - Later issues with usable decals. Three blobs of Sea Venom canopies, deformed, air blisters etc.. I've never seen a really good one.

The IOM-kit, there has the whole moulding a fish-scale structure. The Blenheim must be an Intech rebox but have instruction from The turntable model shop in Luddendenfoot, Halifax.

Bought it just for the all black nightfighter scheme but no decals in the bag... bah

Hasegawa - Not mentioned at Cocardes but the silver coloured Frog issue has a separate nose cone and less camera openings than the later Hasegawa grey coloured issue

32891512717_91119b45f8_b.jpg by Jan H, auf Flickr

Revell - First a lot of flying rivets, F417 Arado Ar234 and a F418 Heinkel He 115 that never was released by Frog. Somewhere in my stash I have the BAC Lightning Hasegawa  mould too

Academy - Frog origin but with recessed panel lines. Too far from the Frog theme but you can always crosskit the parts between them. They fit well together.

Thanks Chris,

I have aftermarket between the war roundels and can print serials etc, but I may take you up on your offer as and when (i.e. if) I ever build the Vimy. It is not a priority at the moment, or in other words I hate rigging biplanes but am getting slightly better at it after 60 years of trying - at least the Airfix 0/400 can be rigged without drilling too many holes in the wings!

Edit - Jan - For the first 20+ year of my life I lived within 10 miles of Halifax - many happy memories.  In middle of building the Academy Avenger - supposedly a new mould but 95% identical to Frog down to the FAA style bulged observation windows, and both lacking either nose or wing 50cal! I have spare Blenheim decals but it was day bomber/fighter scheme as I recall -  see Cocardes site. I built mine as a radar equipped night fighter with a spare radar aerial from the Airfix Mosquito.

Cheers

Pete

No worries Peter, I will see what version I will build and set the other set aside for you.  I think I have just talked myself into a Vimy build !!!

Nice collection @SAU and I think we may have discussed a while back that these Academy / Frog copies are also eligible to build here. You might have to go back a few pages in this thread to read what was said, however Pat @JOCKNEY and l are more than happy to expand this GB, rather than set up too many hurdles. After all we all want to see models built - don’t we?

Cheers.. Dave

I completely agree the more the merrier, thanks Dave @Rabbit Leader

@SAU if those pictures can't inspire people for this GB, we are in trouble !

A Shackleton would be amazing, with all the work that would be required to complete it @PeterB please try to find a set of the RAF decals you need. I will have a look in my stuff but please put a request on the wanted section here on BM as well.

Hi Chris @bigbadbadge a Vimy will be a very welcome addition, now to find someone with the Trinity House Lightship !

cheers Pat

Excellent Dave @Rabbit Leader please put Mike @Ventora3300 down for the "Shell Welder F137" :wicked:

Just teasing :sorry:

Having said that if anyone would like to build one it would be amazing, as I can't honestly remember ever having seen a built one !

cheers Pat

Pat, that original Frog Shell Welder is still residing in the 'Warehouse Stash' I came across last month, along with an 'HMS Tiger' - warning - not likely to be cheap so only for the real enthusiasts! I think a build of a re-boxed version of a Shell Welder can be seen in BM circa 2016.

I had a look for the build which unfortunately has photobucket images so you can no longer see them. A bit of searching on the interweb shows the kit looks the business when finished but is a shocker to build apparently with 130 plus parts !

It was remade by Novo, and others so you never know we might still get to see one

cheers Pat

Ok Pat. I have the right size type D roundels and fin flashes and the walkway lines from the SAAF sheet may do, I also have a sheet of Shack markings made by Sutcliffe (Contrail?) that Hannants recommended but they are a bit iffy by now. If all else fails it will be standard Modelcal lettering and/or DIY. The reason I thought of this kit is that I have just ordered a resin Viper conversion so I should be able to do that Phase III version if I ignore the slight enlargement of the tip tanks! Better finally open the bag and see if all the parts are there - should be fun as they have all fallen off the sprues.

Chris - just noticed an advert in Scale Aircraft Mag  Jan 1980 for MHW near Haworth. I used to use them for mail order and they were selling 50 assorted Frog decs for 50p and 50 German Frog decs for the same so I could have bought them there - makes you weep given today's prices.

Pete

Later - should be OK as the only part missing is one half of the lowered radome and I was going to build it retracted anyway. Sprues are marked "Made in USSR" but full of flash and fuselage somewhat warped - don't know if it is a very early Novo shot or perhaps a very late one judging by the flash. Can't remember if I bought it early 1980's or later. This is one big old bird, in 1/72 only an inch shorter than a B29!

In addition to a Skua and Magister already in my stash, at my Club Model Show last weekend I managed to get a Novo Javelin and Lightning. Both seem to be early Novo as there is little to no flash! Transfers will be binned, and I have Modeldecal and Xtradecal transfers to go on them.

I am really looking forward to this GB starting!

Cheers,

Ray

Hi Ray,

When I built my Javelin a few weeks ago I found that there were no fin flash or overwing roundels available that were the correct size on either my Modeldecal or Xtradecal markings sheets and the Jav is not one of the kits I have Frog decs for so I used slightly smaller roundels and hand painted the fin flash. Might be worth trying a coat of MS Decal Fix or varnish on the Novo ones assuming they are in register - it sometimes works for me.  The Lightning should be no problem in that respect, and I will be building my Novo ex Frog/Hasegawa one before too long, probably in 56 Squadron markings like my Airfix F3.

Later,

Sorry - just noticed Hannants do actually have a full set of markings for the Jav on their 23 Squadron history sheet if that was the one you meant.

Have fun.

Pete

I don’t think you’re the only one Ray. Recent BM history tells us that these Classic GB’s really do take off once started and there’s always a few prolific individuals who manage to complete more than five kits during the period. I’ll try to aim for two myself but will see how things go towards the end. It should be another great trip down ‘memory lane’.

Cheers.. Dave

I'll aim for a couple of completions as well

Will you be keeping a list as per usual? by Kit number?

Yes BK, I'll be doing the usual Classic GB Build list (with links) as this one gets going.

Still not sure whether to list them in kit number or year of first release as there are a number of Frog kits that had mutiple kits numbers during their production period.

From what I can tell, the Frog kit numbering system did not reflect the size or range of the model, as does Matchbox or the early 70's re-serialed Airfix kits.

Either way, it should be a lot of non-serious modelling fun.

Cheers.. Dave

Hello Dave @Rabbit Leader ... So I did a bit of research, and my Buccaneer is the original frog release #F.238 if you are still going to keep a log by kit #. Here is the Scalemates link. https://www.scalemates.com/kits/frog-f238-hawker-siddeley-buccaneer-smk2a-smk50--168100

It shows as 1972 for the original release date.

Hi Dave,

Usually I find if more efficient to have 2 or 3 kits on the go at once so that I can work on one whilst the glue is setting on another etc. I will start the Me 410 and the Shackleton pretty well at once - probably a mistake but we will see. If I have time I might do the Bf 110 later, depending on what plans my other half has for me! I may regret this but at the moment I am looking forward to starting.

Hi all.  This dropped through my letterbox this morning (or at least it would have done, had my letterbox been big enough!).

P1100669.JPG

P1100670.JPG

A "pre-loved" Valiant, minus undecarriage, clear parts and decals, that's in need of some serious TLC.  The original white plastic is now mostly a mucky shade of yellow and has become very brittle.  The fuselage joint has split in a couple of places and in the photo, you can just make out that there's a meandering crack between the roundel and the serial.

All of FROG's V Bombers are highly sought after, but the Valiant especially so.  Whilst Lindberg produced a rival 1/96 Vulcan and Victor (both of which are still readily available), they never did a Valiant.

At present, there's an unmade FROG Valiant on eBay for £170.  My box of broken bits cost me £19, which I was very happy to pay (although it turns out that I was the only bidder :banghead:).

On the back of the box lid is a hand written note saying that the original owner got this kit as a Christmas present in 1965. A nice bit of provenance!

I'd love to build this in the GB, always assuming that I can persuade Pat that in its current state it's under 25% complete :nodding:.  Fingers crossed.

Cheers

Cliff

Just noticed on e-bay lots of single sheets of Frog decs for £3-£4, and a set of 30 for £39.99. Like me they probably bought them as sets of 40 for between 50p and £1 so not a bad investment. Could they have heard about this GB? Perhaps I ought to think about selling my 90+ sheets! Lot of Javelins listed quite cheap, and several Shell Welders including a Gomix one for £20 or so currently - originals are around 3 times that.

Cliff,

Don't expect 1/96 decals are easy to find but at least being a white plane it should be easy enough to print your own decs on white decal paper, perhaps scaling down a set from the Airfix kit, which is what I would probably try as I have one in my stash. Any problems give me a shout and I'll have a go.

Hi Cliff

I think it would be plain rude to not allow such a special kit into this GB.

As for the 25% rule, I don't suppose the kit had many parts to start with and as you are going to have to part dismantle repair, scratch build or search out and find the missing parts, that's a lot of work.

Great to have a piece of Frog Royalty in the GB and the kits not bad either ! :giggle:

cheers Pat

Thanks Pete.  I've got a 1/48 scale roundel sheet which got me pretty close to what I needed for my 1/96 Canberra in the Specialists GB, but as you say the white of Valiant should make DIY printing an easy option too :)

Hi Cliff. Hadn't thought of that as 84" and 54" roundels don't work well with 1/72 which I model! Are you thinking normal or perhaps faded "nuclear" markings?

Hi Pete.  I've been thinking a bit more about the scheme and am now favouring an early, silver paint job.  There are some nice in-flight images of WZ365 wearing silver and by the time she was white, she seemed to have acquired external wing tanks (which the kit lacks). Oh, the box-art shows silver too :).

As an aside, I've got the Lindberg 1/96 Vulcan and Victor kits waiting to be built.  Both are based on the prototype aircraft and should be white and Cerulean blue, respectively.  So I'll eventually end up with quite a colourful V mixture!
